Austria 🇦🇹 : the homeland of Glock and RedBull. Germany 🇩🇪 : the homeland of HK, BMW, and Mercedes Benz. Switzerland 🇨🇭: the homeland of Sig Sauer and Swiss Army knifes. All have one thing in common : they all speak German. 🇩🇪🇦🇹🇨🇭

Normally, people compare Vienna and northern Germany, when they want to stress out the differences between "Austria" and "Germany". A comparison of Vienna and Passau (Bavaria) was new at least. But I agree with HammedHain: Vienna is just a city IN Austria, but not Austria itself. The differences within the countries are bigger then the differences from country to country. You probably would have found more differences between people from Dornbirn (Vorarlberg, Austria) and Vienna than between Passau and Vienna.

When you said Austrians place more importance to titles than Germans, were you only talking about Vienna or whole country? Somewhere in Quora, I read that Austrians use du(informal you, in contrast to Sie, formal you) with strangers more than Germans.
@reinhard8053

You don't need to learn to speak the dialect, but it really helps to understand it. Most Austrians or Bavarians will switch to Standard German if they realize you are not a local, but others won't. And even their "Standard German" will be influenced by dialect. And a group discussion might also be in dialect. Then there are the different names for fruits and vegetables. Even northern Germans have trouble with the language in the south. I(German) didn't have these problems as my mother is from Austria and I was there for weeks at each vacation. I can't speak a dialect but I understand most of them (apart from strong Gsibergerisch).

Petra is right in a sense. But her observations pertain to Germans and Austrians with a less than satisfactory upbringing (Kinderstube), sadly perhaps a majority. A real lady or gentleman, Austrian, German or other, always endeavor to mean what they say and phrase it as courteously as possible. This they have been taught since their early childhood (Kinderstube). Hence Austrians and Germans might differ a little here and there, but only in nuances. Call this snobbish if you must, though it isn‘t. Good parenting is not just the mark of nobles and patricians; plumbers, butchers and farmers master it just as well, as long as they believe it matters.

No, they are not 'entirely different'. The territory comprising modern Austria was also known as German-Austria during the time of the Hapsburgs - 'German' for a reason.

No they aren't entirely different they are infact very similar even by blood it is a lot closer than Nords, Dutch and anglos are to Germans. As one dumb Austrian tried to argue saying Austrians are Germans is like saying anglos are Germans. The've been separated by like 3 thousand years🤦‍♂️

I am an anomaly. I am from Italy but I live in he USA. Nonetheless, the USA has not changed me. I was always an anomaly. I think I would feel right at home in Germany because I am very direct to the point of sounding critical, even if in my mi d I am helping and giving feedback. I am also super punctual, actually early all the time because an appointment to me means you have to be ready when the appointment starts. I am very detail oriented and I value civic honesty. I know that all these traits are very German. On the other hand I am not an elitist, and that is very in line of how the Americans are. I am uncomfortable with all the formalities that Italians use, along with many other Europeans, and I think that was a derivation of me moving to the USA.

You are not Austrian, it's a nationality you are just American. If you do not have dual citizenship with Austria or are generations removed then you do not class as one. Austrians are ethnic Germans even Austrians admit this then again by you saying Austria is better than Germany it looks to me you are denying your German blood. Before you go around saying your 100 percent Austrian (which is actually german) take a DNA test gosh! The locals aren't gonna automatically accept you as one of their own just because your heritage or have visited the place 😂. America needs to stop with these hyphenated divisional identities, Native American, African American etc. American is American and leave it at that

Culture Shock experiances ? Germany and Austria have the Same Culture, the Same Identity and the Same People. There is basicially no difference between Them
@PetraBotekova
@PetraBotekova 5 лет назад
That always depends on your own perspective. You might perceive them as similar if you're culture is very different from their. But ask an Austrian if they think there the same as Germans and you will get a pretty clear answer :)

I am German and I Know some austrians Who identify as German. I dont Know if you Are interested in history but the Austrian emporer Franz Joseph I and Mozart also Said as Austrians that they identify as germans. Also Austria was the leader of the German confederation founded in 1815 and they lead the German states during the German war in 1866. Austrians started to Not identify aus germans After the Second world war because they dont want to associated with the Nazi crimes Even tho Hitler was Austrian himself. Austrians are natural germans like bavarians etc. :)
@michaelgrabner8977
@michaelgrabner8977 5 лет назад
@@eingamer1918 Hitler gave up his austrian citizenship in 1914 and became a bavarian because he felt as a bavarian and not as austrian simply because Braunau was a long time part of Bavaria before it became part of Austria..and 1914 is years before he got any political ambitions...and therefore for being a bavarian he became 1918 "german". By the way as an "austrian as you say" he couldn´t have been elected as Reichskanzler in the first place .. therefore only german citizens could have been elected.. And at the time of Mozart and Franz Joseph I the term "german" had a totally different mindset than today...today its a national term in those days it was a pure cultural term.. I thought you are interested in history at least you claimed it indirectly..it seems that´s not really the case here ...
@eingamer1918
@eingamer1918 5 лет назад
michael grabner Ha you seem to be joking. I am interested in history and you dont seem to have Any deep Knowledge. Hitler was accepted as chancellor because he was Austrian and thus German. Only because he Took the German citizenship doesnt mean that he isnt Austrian anymore. He did that in order to refuse military Service in Austria because he hated that Multikultural Empire and wanted to fight in a 100% German Army. If he was French and Took the German Citizenship he wouldnt have become chancellor because he wouldnt be German. Also all of Austria was Part of Bavaria until the 10th Century so the Argument that Braunau is so close to Bavaria is no Argument. And if you look the List of dialects than you see that the Austrian dialect is a sub dialect of the Bavarian one. There is no Hard border between Bavarians and Austrians in terms of Language Culture and they Even descent from the Same Germanic tribe. But the one is German the other is not. You See, that make no sense. And no, the Term German is the same today as in the past.
@michaelgrabner8977
@michaelgrabner8977 5 лет назад
@@eingamer1918 Austria was part of Bavaria till 1156..that´s the 12th century and not the 10th century...just saying because it´s History... So don´t tell anyone you know history because by the things you wrote it is clear obvious that you don´t.. It´s also History that Bavaria never ruled in Austria although it was part of Bavaria ...simply because Austria was a Mark those days and a Mark is imperial territory defacto excluded from the actual dutchy and ruled by an imperial states offical with the imperial titel "Markgraf"..and a Markgraf was a states war-lord sent by the Kaiser and not by the Bavarian Duke ...infact the Bavarian Duke had to do what the Markgraf says in every matter of defending the Empire...so therefore the Bavarian Duke was in the region of Austria a rank below to the Markgraf...and Austria was therefore infact always an totally autonom territory where the Bavarian Duke had no influence at all at no time.. So to say Austria was part of Bavaria without any explaining details is simply a silly joke! Besides the fact that you already lost 2 centuries in the first place... And Braunau Hitler´s Birthtown was the - "center" or you can say "the source" of the "Bavarian uprising"="Bayrischer Volksaufstand" ..simply because it was a Bavarian Town ever since...which became Austrian territory in the late 18th century because of the Austrian succsession war. So do the math... Braunau was bavarian territory since 708 and became part of Austria in 1779..that are more than 1000 years of being "bavarian" and that amount of time has of course an impact of the people who are living there by feeling themselves as "Bavarian" and not as "Austrian" although it was Austrian territory now..that mindset of bavarian heritage changed not until after WW2 which isn´t so long ago.. And last but not least it is also a silly joke to say "the term "german" is the same today as in the past" this claim alone shows defintively that you have no clue at all and that I´m only wasting my time with you... So have a nice life and you should really buy some -"decent" - history-books in the first place...because in matter of history you have a lot to learn
