Awesome!!!! I’m excited to try this. In our condo community, there’s a big sago with all kinds of seeds. I watched a different video that talked about soaking them to get the red skin off. Rather than waiting a week, I’m fishing the seeds out that sank (evidently if they float, they are no good…true?) and getting my hammer! Excited for a new gardening adventure!
@TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel
Hi Alicia and thanks for watching this video! Yes the seeds that float will not germinate so don’t waste time with those. Be gentle with your hammer when extracting the seeds from the outer shell and plant your seeds as seen in this video. Place your containers in a location that is protected from the weather and direct sunlight, only indirect sunlight during the germination process. Keep the soil in your containers slightly moist but not wet or soggy and when starting with fresh seeds, they should begin to sprout in about 14 days. Some may sprout before others so be patient. Most seeds take on a greenish color when they are about to sprout roots and their first leaves

@@TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel awesome! Screened in patio in the shade good? I live in Charleston, SC so it’s toasty out. I got them out of the shell safely! I cracked open one that floated and it was squishy. I was curious to see the difference. I will report back on progress! Thanks for the tips!

Progress Update Y'all! 6 of the 7 seeds I tried this method on are now GREEN and growing tap roots. I even had a seed I accidentally cracked, but laid in the soil "together" and it still grew! It's really fun to see the seed start to turn from beige to green! I have not had great luck growing vegetables and fruits in my garden my 2 years in SC, but I am STELLAR at these sagos so far. Might have to go back to the tree where I got the seeds and get another batch going! Thank you for this video. It is fun starting these babies FAST.

It took me a lot longer than 2 weeks to get anything, closer to 3 months, but, THIS METHOD WORKS!! I started with 12 seeds that I collected from an adult plant. 8 of them are showing growth! Thank you for the video!

Glad to see your tutorial TGTG success. My neighbor brought me 10 seeds to see if I have a "Green thumb" to grow from seeds. He said, "Let me see if you have a green thumb to grow these." Me: "Yeah, I grow all kinds of stuff from seeds" so here I am taking mental notes. They seem dry but he said they drop and sprout and he didnt want to grow anymore. I really appreciate your simple instructions. Most things that work are simple. The comments and replies are also very helpful. I had noticed my sago palm has pups growing up around it. Then I noticed the red seeds around the crown of new growth in center. Sort of looked like figs and pulled a few off the attached area. I liked that you said; "Dont wait to long to prepare for germination once removed from mother plant. Thanks and good gardening . I hope you have a profitable season in Tipton.

I thought the I credibly tough outer pod was an impediment to quick germination. I thought about cracking one , soaking and then planting or completely removing the pod. This answers the question and I thank you for publishing your results and advice

@TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel
Thanks for joining me for this video my friend! Yes bored to wait 6 months, all you need is a viable cycad, sand, temperatures around 70° or above and a moderate amount of sunlight to swiftly sprout them.

I just picked some seeds off of my existing female saga palm tree, and I placed them in a bucket of water to see if if they were good and they were good and I still have them in water now. Am I supposed to leave them in water for a week or so or should I go ahead and take them out &when do you plant your seeds? Do they have to be completely dry. Did you dry them out first for so many days before you planted them into these pots?please advise
@TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel
@TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel 2 месяца назад
I highly recommend removing them from the water, dry with a paper towel, remove the outer husk leaving only the inner seed, place the seeds in separate small containers laying each seed on it’s side and pressing the seed down into the soil until half of the seed is submerged beneath the soil and the other half remains above the soil. Water well and place containers in a mostly shaded area, mist containers if soil becomes dry, seeds should begin to germinate within 2 weeks. Thanks for watching this video!

Typically the seeds of a sago palm tree 🌴 will begin to fall to the ground when they are ready to be harvested. At this point they can be taken directly from the tree as well.

Also, Is it ok If I only remove the orange shell and soak the seeds in water for 24 hours and then put them in soil? Will they also sprout soon? Or I have to remove the orange shell and the pod for them to sprout in 14 days?
@TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel
If you wish for the seeds to sprout in around 14 days I recommend skipping the whole soaking in water step as it is completely unnecessary, remove the outer shell, the seeds should look like they look in this video when you plant them half way down in the soil, leave half of the seed uncovered as you see them in this video, do not water them, only use a spray bottle to mist them daily only enough to keep the soil moist but not wet.

I have 5 seeds. I placed one with shell in soil and wait until it sprouts. For the rest of 4 seeds, I removed the shell. 3 sank and 1 floated. then I placed them in soil and i hope many seeds sprout!
@TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel
Thanks for watching this video! The one that you left in the shell may take up to 6 months or more to sprout if you planted it like I did in this video (recommend) so be patient with that one. The others, if also planted using this method should sprout in 7-14 days. Never bury your seeds completely in the soil as they may rot before sprouting.

Hay good advice, would it be possible to cover it with plastic? My plan is to use plastic water bottles cut in half, and rather than throw away the top half, I was going to use it like a greenhouse, so the moisture is sort of contained.
@TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel
@TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel 3 месяца назад
Hey Rick, thanks! I haven’t tried covering them with plastic but give it a try definitely, I would however suggest removing the plastic cover at least once a day for 15 minutes to allow excess moisture to escape and fresh air to come in, this will prevent the seeds from molding or rotting prior to germination.

Good stuff. Trying this today. 👍🏽👍🏽
@TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel
Hey Billy, definitely give it a try, it works best with fresh seeds (less than 2 weeks old) but will work with older seeds but may take a few days more to germinate. It’s a fun germination experiment but I’ll be honest with you Billy, sago palm trees that are grown from seeds grow really slow, if you have access to the cycads that develop either along the trunk or around the base of a sago palm tree, try germinating those, it takes about 30-40 days but once the cycads sprout roots, they immediately sprout fronds that grow at a geometric rate, you’ll have a small sago palm (12-14”) In less than 2 months of grown in a greenhouse.

@@TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel so I actually bought 4 Sagos and 2 Ponytail palms from Costco last year. They were all about a foot and a half tall. I live in Texas and it froze here, first time in a long time, for about 4 weeks long. Well, I guess I didn't cover them well enough because they look very dead. Branches are completely hello and falling out. So I bought 12 seeds from CZ Grain Store. I did exactly what you said in the video so I'm hoping for the best. Thank you very much!!

The seeds need both warmth and light to germinate, temperatures need to be 72° or more. Use fresh seeds for best results .

. In my home garden, sycd was grown 15 years ago. During the first 13 years it was good, but in the last two years, the growth of the leaves began to be incomplete. Note that I fertilize it every winter with manure or compost, and during the summer with NPK fertilizer. Help us❤
@TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel
@TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel 10 месяцев назад
Greetings my friend, sago palm trees 🌴 honestly don’t require much fertilizer at all and one possibility is that the tree is receiving too much fertilizer and it’s roots have become nutrient locked. I recommend, if possible, removing any grass, weeds, fallen debris or mulch ect. from around the base of your tree in at least an 18” radius. Next place wood ashes from natural non treated wood generously around the base of your tree gently moisten the ashes with your garden hose. Water once weekly for one month then feed your tree every 10-14 days with 1 tablespoon of epsom salt mixed with one gallon of water (use no other types of fertilizer) after 60-75 days you should notice new growth emerging from the center of your tree. Also sago palm trees require regular pruning, at most there should only be around 3 rings of leaves at the top of the tree and the trunk should be completely bare. If your tree is 15 years old it should be 8-10” tall at this point. Pruning any dead, dying, damaged or diseased leaves off of your tree also promotes new healthy growth.

The best time to harvest is after the fruit fully ripens and fall to the ground. You can take them directly from the tree but only after the fruit matures and ripens. The seeds should be around the size of the seeds shown in this video.

The difference is the same as the difference between mist and raindrops, rain drops will saturate the soil while mist will not.
