Great break down on his mechanics. I like the way you found the proper position at each check point and just hit repeat as you describe the motion.

There was some good info in that video but there are a couple things I have an issue with. First of all your belief that not getting to a tall balanced position is a good thing. In his case it may just be something that developed as he was learning to start his move to the plate. Before he gets his front leg to the top of its ascent his hip starts towards the plate as it should but now the center of his weight distribution is so far forward of his back knee that it forces his front leg straight into the ground to counter his weight shift. Because of the height of the mound and his tremendous back leg driving his body forward he is able to counteract the downward motion of his front leg. You can’t teach kids this motion. Few have developed his level of drive to the plate and in a lot of cases the mound they throw off is one third the height of a major league mound. They will be short striding and releasing the ball to far behind their front toes. This will manifest itself in two ways decreased velocity as they get older and not being able to finish their breaking balls. My theory of how Cole developed his motion to the plate may or may not be true because I see lots of kids who don’t get to a tall balanced position. Everything else you said describes what the pitching motion should be like. I put this out there for anyone coaching young kids to pitch.

Astros analytics & Cole. It wasn't hard to see what the Astros analytics were going to do with Cole. They were going to have Cole throw more breaking pitches and fewer sinkers. It's what they do. It's what they did, and we could all see it coming. Cole cut his sinker usage in half, from 14 percent to 6 percent. He dumped his changeup, from 10 percent to 4 percent. He threw slightly more sliders, a lot more curves, and the four-seam fastballs he threw were located very, very differently. Percentage of four-seamers thrown in the upper third of the zone or higher: 2017 -- 36 2018 -- 52 That went from below average to above average, as the 2018 Major League average was 46 percent. "Fastballs high and curveballs low" is the Houston way, and Cole's strikeout rate jumped from 23 percent to 34 percent -- the largest increase of any pitcher with 100 innings thrown in both years.

I think that's more than reasonable. Red Sox are down. Rays don't have an elite offense like NYY. With Houston losing Cole and JV and Greinke getting older, I think the AL door is wide open. Full disclosure: I'm a Twins fan. Twins don't have the starting pitching to compete for a WS. Wish we would spend $ on Bumgarner or Ryu.

Looking at Coles mechanics from his days with the Pirates I can see the influence of Nolan Ryan when he came to the Astros. His stride became much more powerful and longer. Another thing I saw in current video is his back leg movement does not wrap around his body as in this video. Your belief that that wrap around his body is a good thing. Lots of pitchers have that wrap around motion but again I want to stress to those of you teaching kids that is not a good move. In this video his push leg gets really wide towards first base which requires it to find its way back to his center of gravity. I didn’t see that in other videos.
@tootallforbaseball
@tootallforbaseball 3 года назад
There is never any mention of "arm speed" in any mechanics video... There is no way that any pitcher could throw hard unless they had good arm speed. Gerrit Cole could throw 90+ without being on the mound using those mechanics. Also, you don't have to fully firm up your front leg totally, as long as it is stable and not moving. Tom Seaver and Josh Beckett did not firm their front leg up before throwing.

@Dev518
@Dev518 4 года назад
You can't stay loaded over the back foot and keep energy moving forward at the same time. If you're staying over the back foot you're probably just pushing the hips forward and leaning the torso back which isn't going to create a ton of energy towards the plate. It's really about staying in the back hip.
