Gerry Marsden from Gerry and the Pacemakers has an interview with Gerard smith on the New Zealand program; The Beat Goes On. This is part 1 of the 20 Minute interview.
Around year 2000 when Gerry toured Australia, I promoted one of his shows and got to spend the whole day with him...watched the show from side stage and he signed my "Before they were theBeatles" book...what a thrill and what a lovely man...he knew how much of a thrill it was for me to meet him and he loved it as well...one of the great moments of my life
Watching in 2022. Just had to see Jerry and reminisce. Such a lovely person! Loved this band. RIP to those that have passed, you are still a light in my life!
Thank you Jerry for the music and fun you have brought to our lives.I grew up listening to your music and think the kids of today are missing out big time.I don't think they will be listening to rap and some of the other music when they are in their 50s or 60s.
Great interview. Gary seems like a nice dude. I didn't know he and his band were that connected to the Beatles in those early days.Same gigs, same manager and same producer. Not super talented like the Beatles but good enough for a run of good hits for a few years. He looks like he invested that money well. A lot of those early British bands that fizzled after only a few years and were never heard from again weren't so lucky.
The Lennon/McCartney songwriting duo put a collaborative and competitive energy and creative edge to their music. Gerry was a composer and songwriter too, but he didn't have a second one in his band to keep the creative juices flowing like they were in the Beatles.
Oh, I like it, what a perfect song. All your other tunes, especially your skiffle music. You are the best Gerry. Greets from Massachusetts USA. Worcester, Massachusetts loves you.
@Rockinroy1 Too bad they didn't want to know him(if that's really true). Beside being an affecting singer(decades on, Ferry Cross the Mersey is still a sweet, beautiful song) and he seems to be a warm, amusing fellow.
My genesis; my birth channel. Amazing, we took those days for granted and it never occurred to us that things were going to change beyond all recognition in Liverpool. My brothers' group, The Earthlings performed at The Cavern. There will never again be a music epoch like it. Why! Because you don't get song writing talent or delivery like it. Much of the human touch remains thankfully. It was unique to Liverpool. I 'illustrated' it all in my poetry books, Believin' of Liverpool and the earlier published, A Sea Veneer of Merseyside. The 3,000 copies sold out in a few weeks. I have the fondest memories. I wonder what memories later generations will have? Never mind. I retired to Spain. Cy Tucker, Ruby Murray's husband is here. Pat Cordwell visited regularly before she passed on. Eric (Ricky) Tomlinson has a place in Benidorm. My claim to fame was my poetry. Here is a video poem inspired by a Liverpool (Bootle) teenage girlfriend I dated in the 60s. Thanks for 'listening'. Love to you all. Michael (Mike) Walsh (poetry). That's strange he would call the the band the Pacemakers because back then the pacemaker really didn't exists, they had prototypes, experimental ones that you would wear outside the chest, unless he got the name from car racing?
Gerry is so good at recalling everything from way back then. He is starting to lose his voice and has put on a lot of weight around the middle from all that good food in Spain, but he is so warm and agreeable nonetheless.
don't make me laugh!! are just the "multiple singers" what kept them fresh? come on! how about creativity? How about the musical evolution they had in just 6 years? If you don't like them, it's OK for me, but you can't simply deny the enormous influence they were and still are, even 40 years after their breakup. That couldn't happen just because they were 3 singers instead of one.
the beatles are not that great ,you are so mistaken and dont know what your talkin about besdides selling over a billion records first ti do a music video ,first in feed back on record first to do so many innoivative things in the studio .and then there wrting . and there ability to keep changing, reinventing their selves . I could go on and on each album was a event.and their influence on music is still felt todsy and they influenced so many.
All u guys are forgetting one thing, they all knew each other, yes they were competitive, but Gerry is worth about 10 million, with mccartney's divorce(which he paid a lot of money), he still worth almost a billion!....so I would say although Gerry is an awesome person, he is nowhere near the talent of McCartney...sorry all you beatle haters.
