Thanks for sharing this great clip of probably my all time favourite British driver always a pleasure for me in the late 70's and 80's when I used to Marshall at Brands Hatch this has bought back some great memories
Hi Steve. Thanks for commenting and Dad would've been incredibly humbled by your comments - he was just a normal bloke and always thought how lucky he was, so made sue he put a show on for the marshals and spectators, who either gave up their time for free ot paid to watch. Cheers.
Fantastic, better than F1, Nascar, Indy and V8 Supercars all rolled together. I spotted an Anglia, a Zephyr, a Renault Alpine or Dauphine I think, a swag of Cortina's, a couple of old Merc's.... great stuff.
The man Gerry Marshall is among the Greatest to sit behind the controls of an automobile and take it to it's Limits. Always Impressive in the Ease, Finesse & Decisiveness in his approach to Driving/Racing.
It doesn't seem that long ago that Gerry, Tony "Moscvitch" Lanfranchi, Whizzo Williams et al were with us, and then they were gone in what seemed like the blink of an eye. I for one remember them fondly, and I do believe that John Rhodes is still with us, in his 90s. I loved Gerry's column in Car and Car Conversions Magazine, his humour really shone through.
Time flies, Tony was left 17 years ago and Dad 16 years ago :( Yes, John Rhodes is still with us and I keep in touch with his son. Dad's CCC columns were great 'From The Hot Seat', but they started in 1971 - 50 years ago!! I have all of Dad's columns, as he wrote for CCC, then MOTOR and then Autosport, all very funny :)
Hey Gregor - your Dad was my boyhood hero and he still is this to this day - he proved in no uncertain terms that a big lad who liked a beer and a laugh could succeed at the highest level I loved the Berthas of course - but my abiding memories are of him in the V8 Tuscans - unbelievable the way he could control those monsters I know of nobody else who is held in such high esteem in my group of motorsport nutters Bless his memory - the world was lucky to have seen him
@@vicjones3992 Hi Vic, thanks for the kind words about Dad, he would be very honoured. The Tuscans were great (I was at all the races he did in them too) and he loved driving them - I have put some footage on the channel, but there is loads on RU-vid already. Hope you and your group of nutters enjoy the videos 🍻
Gregor, thank you so much for posting this as your dad was a real hero for me as I was growing up (64 now!). I first met Gerry at the Racing Car Show in 1972 (I think?) when after a nice chat he actually let this random spotty kid sit behind the wheel of 'Old Nail', his special saloon Firenza! After that he was 'The Man' as far as I was concerned, sod F1, I was on the bus from Croydon to Brands at every opportunity to watch my hero racing the Firenza and later Baby Bertha against the likes of Nick Whiting, Tony's Strawson and Lanfranchi et al followed by a few drinks together in the Kentagon (as I got older!), great times and frankly a great era of racing! Thank you so much for re-kindling those memories and though your dad has sadly passed be assured his memory will live on forever, a true gentleman with more car control than a full grid of BTCC 'heroes'! All the Best, Steve
Thanks for the lovely words Stephen and great to hear Dad made such a positive lasting impression on you and he would be very honoured to hear. I try to keep his memory alive and people like yourself make it all worthwhile, thank you 🍻
No problem, I'll keep them coming, I try to add a couple a month, plus any other videos featuring Dad that I find on RU-vid I add to the playlist. Enjoy ;)
@@GregorMarshall96 Yes and I remember your Dad in Baby Bertha, Big Bertha and Dolomite Sprints. Marvelous marvelous, times. A truly larger than life character. Be very proud.
I thought I was watching the race from 1964 until I saw Gerry at the end. The cars, names , drivers, crowd, the weather, Murray Walker, lots of puddles and no run off areas. Looks like it was on film and the overall effect helped by the 480 resolution. Way cool
How great to see the Late Great Gerry Marshall win a incredibly difficult race in terrible wet conditions, I had the pleasure of chatting to him at Snetterton on numerous occasions RIP Gerry
gerry and grant worth the entrance fee on their own! Had a beer years ago with Gerry between Tring and leighton buzzard on the way home from silverstone. A moment of pleasure and awe
Hi David. In the UK there are lots of different clubs, series and championships, all with their own regulations and depending on the regulations, depends on what you are allowed to race, so it really depends. There are championships just for V8s, for pre 1966 and for heavily modifed cars with different than original engines, so it really depends.
I only have 2 autographed race Programmes - both signed by Gerry. The first was one I was just a kid, the second not far off 30 years later when Gerry was at Shelsley Walsh in July 2003. I'm sure he had a walking stick by then and when I asked him to sign my programme it brought a smile to his face.
That's lovely to hear - I didn't have anything signed when Dad passed away, not something you ask your own Dad for but I've managed to buy a few on ebay, etc. Dad would have been on sticks at Shelsley, he had been on sticks for a few years as needed both knees replacing, got them done and was able to walk without sticks for the first time in years but then tripped over and broke his hip and had to go back on sticks and timings sound right. He did get his hip replaced and was then back to normal before he passed away 🍻
Good to hear you enjoyed. Car development has definitely moved on, the laptimes have decreased a lot, more power from the engines and better suspension being the main developments on all the cars 🏎
I remember seeing Gerry marshall at goodwood in an Alvis Grey Lady, he wiped the floor with it. Quite amusing seeing such a regal car driven so well by such a racing legend. We miss you Gerry “only here for the beer” 😉
The Grey Lady was great and it was a shame they had to use the lower powered spare, as the head gasket on the good engine went on the Friday test day - Ivan Dutton built a lovely car. I've got that race on DVD too, I'll post it on RU-vid in the coming weeks, keep an eye out ;)
It's called RAIN-X. Used to come in a yellow (double) bottle, cream cleaner applied first, wiped off, then the rain-x was wiped over. I used it in the eighties. Seemed to work up to a certain point, enabled the water to form into beads large enough that the slipstream grabbed them and pulled them upwards and away.
I still use it today, on the exterior of the windscreen and they also do an anti-fog for the interior (in a black bottle) that I use also. Never needed windscreen wipers in the wet...yet 😉
I knew your Dad a little. He once complained that my BMW had sprayed oil over his windscreen. This wasn’t on the track at Snetterton but on a rather fast drive there from Cambridge! Probably around 1972
The stuff that was put on the second place mini's windscreen is called RAIN X and I use it regularly and it's excellent at water dispersal. what a wonderful race and Gerry Marshall was a legend and will always be to me and many others.
@@ldnwholesale8552 It is good when it works, but depending on race and rain length it can wear off as you say and the wipers are dfeinitely needed then!!
Horrible conditions! Mk1 and Mk2 Jaguars ( in my opinion ) are still a very good looking sedan, original Mini Coopers are fabulous, but i would not have a German new Mini, even if it was given to me! NO Thanks!! Same for the new Beetle, the only one i do not mind, is the new Fiat 500 providing it is built properly, the American ones have many reliability issues!
@@GregorMarshall96 My Dad owned a Mk2 3.4 4spd man o/d beautiful car, cream with red leather, it was not slow either. My Gran had a XK150, BRG chrome wires, Gran dad had an Mk4 red wire wheels beautiful cars!!
