Get up close and personal! Take chances and be courageous!
In this video, I move quickly through Chinatown Toronto to capture real unhindered photographs of the people of Chinatown and the vibe of the streets. After an in-depth overview of my camera settings, I discuss a street photography technique of shooting into window reflections and talk about the most common fears when photographing in public places and how to overcome them.
Photography Equipment used:
Pentax K3
Pentax DA 21mm Limited lens
A special Thanks to Benjamin Groe for filming video on this street photography walk!
Benjamin’s gear for this walk:
Canon T5i
Canon 18-135 IS STM Lens

Finally, a street photographer, on You Tube, that's really a street photographer. So many, these days, want to move the goal posts, because it's easier and safer. You know...in the old film days, news photographers would always leave their cameras set to f8 at 125, because if they had to take a shot quickly that setting would usually get a usable photo. It's a trick my Dad taught me, many years ago, and I still use it today.
@CarmineGroe

David Will thanks so much for watching and for this note Dave! Yes, I usually shoot using hyper focal distance; f8-f11, reasonable shutter speed and let the iso move wherever. As you say, you’ll rarely miss a shot, can be more aware of your surroundings and not fudge with technical details. Cheers.

Check out my latest video on this channel where I walk the streets with my Hasselblad. I like the ricoh GR series of cameras and waiting to get the gr3 in my hands to test it out. I am comfortable with the Pentax k3, it is a wonderful tool, so underrated, so small and built like a tank. Apart from having those incredible small and sharp optics, it has built in shake reduction and is fully weather sealed.

Great work and the closeness is what makes it so strong. Just a quick question on the post processing: the B&W is harsh, strong and high contrast and adds to the images, while the color looks a little too wild to me. Is this your "normal" way of doing post? Do you use presets?
@CarmineGroe
@CarmineGroe 5 лет назад
Hey San! Thanks so much for watching and for your note! I guess all artistic endeavours are subjective, right? I tend to like strong all around for the most part; contrast, expression in my subjects, etc. I am selective about what works well in colour, and I want the colour to have impact in most cases, so I often exaggerate it... just my way of course. With regards to presets, I have a few I have created in photoshop that I start with many times. I then tweak from there, depending on the content, and what I'm trying to emphasize in a specific image. It is always changing... I also have a couple of presets customized in NIK collection, a Tri-x film setting for example, for a more analogue look with my b&w's. Overall, I don't like to automate much and try to post process as in a traditional darkroom.
@sanwarzone
@sanwarzone 5 лет назад
I use the new DXO-Old Nik Collection (inside Lightroom) also and found some nice B&W effects to start with...Your camera work is fun to watch, so thanks again for the response. www.flickr.com/photos/sanwarzone/

@CarmineGroe

Hi Nicholas, thanks for watching! Wow, sounds like you'll have to find methods to shoot street photography that are unorthodox to make it work. I think you might try a mirrorless and hold the camera away from your eye while using the lcd screen and shooting from the hip. You should also try hyperfocal distance shooting to remove auto focus from the equation. A phone might make it easier as well and people tend to not pay attention to phones anymore. Where there is a will, there is a way! Keep shooting :)

It really depends on the country and culture. If you do it in Hungary, you'll be looked down upon at the very least, but most of the time you'll be rejected, or worse, abused. In fact, in Hungary, there is a law that says you can't freely photograph people!

Similar to what you use in your video, a Pentax DSLR is currently my main camera at the moment. Primarily a landscape shooter, but I would love to do more of street photography. The problem is I also have exactly an issue that you mentioned in the video. I think it also depends on local etiquette as well. In some countries, it is very rude to photograph people without their permission even in public space.
@CarmineGroe
@CarmineGroe 5 лет назад
Parinya Ekparinya thanks so much for stopping in, watching the video, and for your comment Parinya! The first thing you’ll want to do is find out whether it’s legal to photograph people in public places where you live. In most countries, including Canada, the USA, and most of Europe it is. The next part will be to figure out a strategy to approach strangers and get candid photos on the street. I recommend you start to build confidence by using a technique called “Shooting from the hip”. I discuss this technique on one of my other videos which you should watch if you like: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3l_kIoA_DWE.html This technique will help you get candid photos on the street from very close, with a wide angle lens, without putting the camera to your eye. It can give amazing results with practice. This worked for me when I was starting out. As you shoot more and more your confidence will grow and you’ll be able to slowly put the camera to your eye and shoot unnoticed. I know, it’s not easy to get the courage to photograph strangers but it does take that; courage and confidence and a smile always helps if someone notices you. Also, watch my “portraits of strangers” video to see some other techniques I describe that can be useful. Good luck and keep shooting!

Walking with camera on your face kinda does two things. You're obviously always ready to take the shot and you also feel like you're really not there and are just looking at a screen (that helps with the fear thing).
@CarmineGroe
@CarmineGroe 5 лет назад
Verdoux007 that’s very interesting, great observation. Definitely there are benefits by being ready but you can’t get away with a camera to your face in every situation. I believe you have to feel out a situation and have different strategies for different scenarios. In this case, there was a street party going on and you can get away with more because people are having a good time and they’ll likely be more open to photographs.Thanks for watching!

I think this style of photography is now becoming dated in certain places especially cities my reason for saying that is I've noticed more & more drug pushers on the streets and if you photo them! Even photographing empty back streets with no people is now dangerous as they think your surveying the area. I've been stopped several times by guys wanting to know what I'm doing and the only thing I would say is go out with a friend doing this, by yourself is dangerous or stick to where you know surveillance cameras are on buildings and street lights.

I really liked your video BUT in the United Kingdom, if i tried to take photos like this, I would get profanity thrown at me, and/or punched in the face. The people in the UK are very very sensitive and think that in a public place they have ultimate right on the photos that you take. This is untrue but culture-wise they are very inconsiderate and lack the tame, level-headed nature of the people you were photographing. If i pre-focused then made sudden movements to take someones picture, im pretty sure my camera would be snatched and slammed to the ground. Unfortunately its a risk I am not willing to take.

Don't agree with your in the face approach, very rude of you without asking for subject's permission after the shots.

Peter Cellphone Thanks for watching the video, you have every right to disagree with this approach. I disagree with you though...and I must say, I’m never rude, always approach Street Photography with good intentions. The large majority of the genre of street photography is to photograph without permission, so I’m not doing anything new here.

With all the security cameras recording everyone in public and face recognition, street photographers are the last thing people need to worry about. At least its art!

Martin Granger thanks for taking the time to watch the video Martin, glad you enjoyed it! As the famous photographer Robert Capa says, if your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough😆
