even though ep 5 was crazy sad and made me bawl my eyes out, it was probably my favourite just because of all of the depth we get into each character and the fact wille makes the queen FINALLY realise how much of an awful parent she is
I think from Simon’s perspective like he’s always know that Wilhelm has had issues and he keeps trying to help like he tried with Eric situation but it doesn’t seem to be working and now after seeing this explosion of 3 seasons worth of trauma he realizes that he has only seen the tip of the iceberg of Wille’s issues. Wille is suffering in these circumstances and these circumstances aren’t really going to change so if Simon was to stay with him it would be like watching the person you love suffer everyday and you can’t really do anything about it.
Wille needed to say that to his parents, his parents needed to hear that he needed them and they needed to see that he is hurt by eveyrything they expect of him. That last scene is heartbreaking, but simon witness how much everything that happens hurts wille and it seems like nothing is going to change (he is the crown prince) and as much as it kills us to see that, he took the right decision to end it for his own sake. But seriously arcade!!! 😭
I was thinking, either in the 2nd or 3 episode, about Wille saying to Simon in season one that he was the only person he felt he could talk to. But i didn't see anything wrong with Simon's decision to leave/end things, like you at the end, because there was no communication or better put there was silence from Wilhelm's end/way. So much for "you are the ONLY ONE i can talk to".

simon *never* asked him to come out. simply to not deny him. simon knew he couldn’t come out and left him for a moment to figure things out in s1. the first issue wasn’t that he said it wasn’t him. it’s that he said he wouldn’t make a statement and still did. as for the last breakup, i would’ve done it too. especially if wille takes out his frustration on simon constantly. 100% get why he snapped at his parents, but no reason for simon to receive his vitriol prior. so don’t think there was a better timing. wait so he goes to bed thinking all is fine and break up the next day? that’s cruel

yeah simons biggest thing is he feels wille has totally lost himself and its hurting both of them which is true bc even since s1 wille didnt want the crown, even when erik was alive it was too much. and he blames himself thinking he makes it worse for wille he doesnt see himself as helping him on top of coming from a broken home it was one giant final straw in this episode it was so hard to watch the first time 😭
Right. But also I understand Simons decision and support but I think he should have timed it better. Like if it was me like I would have comforted Wille and calmed him down and then say that stuff the next day. Like why break up after Willhe poured his heart and soul out and has been bottling it up. Or maybe he should have done it before also I think it’s good that he watched the whole thing so Simon can fully understand we’re Willie is coming from and his situation because in episode 4 they both were saying how it’s good to have your own opinion but whenever they talk it comes out wrong on Simon’s end so I think I think it’s good that both of them pour out there feelings and I’m so sad it’s over
Edvin's acting is so incredible, the final ish scene with the presents was all improvised by him. Although this is one of my favourite episodes it made me so incredibly angry (especially the queen)
I'm glad u came to understand Simons decision because I know a lot of people judge Simon for what he did in this episode, hurting Wilhelm not only after he poured his emotions out but also because it was his birthday, but i think what people fail to realise is that he says earlier in the season that he feels that everything he does is wrong and is all his fault. He feels like all the pain that Wille, Wille's family and Simons family are going through is because of him, also by being together in their situation not only is he losing himself but also sees Wilhelm losing himself too. Its the first time Simon puts himself first, i feel like it was a strong yet difficult thing for him to do, to say he can't do it anymore even though he knows he will hurt because he loves Wilhem and equally hurt Wilhelm too....I completely understood Simon.
I completely agree with you. I would just add that in a way Simon also got to see what his future with Wilhelm might look like. This family is completely broken by the pressure of the crown and Wilhelm is going down the same path. It's a crushing realization but there's just nothing Simon could do to actually help Wilhelm be happy and more himself within this environment. He's tried and he failed every time. So, Wilhelms parents are an example for what their relationship might look like in the future as well. And he's so right to get out of that.

Gosh the way this show tackles things like toxic parenting and toxic masculinity is so interesting and heartbreaking. Wilhelm's parents but also just Sarah's and Simon's dad. I think it's important to show how a toxic relationship with a parent affects teens. And also the fact that Wilhelm got so mad and loud felt so justified. As someone who has a parent who is just not validating me and hasn't for years i know that its just this bubbling up of anger, and you go through that for years in silent pain. screaming it out only feels to do it justice. (i haven't confronted my parent yet bc it is still too freaking confusing and i have more important stuff i think in my life i want to focus on)
I’ve been in sort of a similar situation to Simon with the confrontation between Wille and the Queen. My boyfriend went through a lot of abuse from his brothers (one in particular more than the other 2) and I witnessed him get attacked (for lack of a better word) by his brother at one point. It’s scary! When you’re a guest in someone’s home and something confrontational happens and you don’t know what to do so you just sit there in shock. Truly frightening.
It was so nice to see Wille finally saying everything that he kept to himself, basically, since season 1. This poor boy was left alone with a bunch of responsibilities, so, it was a great moment. But yeah, his parents response just wasn't it.

For real!! When arcade started playing my heart went back to the pain from the release day. It was such an intense cut off and with knowing you have to wait a week before they wrap it all up in 1 go; it was a nerve wracking week to say the least
Wille has always had bad communication in relationships and i think that comes from his family and not being able to open up around them but im glad he said those things to his mum. Excited to see your finale reaction!
Wills’s scene at the end was incredible. I was equally shocked it happened and clapping along because it’s everything I had wanted him to say the whole show. I totally understand Simon’s decision and I think it was a healthy decision to make. But the timing was so bad. I can’t imagine how I would feel getting that reaction from my parents and then having my partner leave…on his birthday. Even just waiting until the next day would have been better 😢
I feel for Wille.....i feel his pain .... His mother has been either about loosing Erik or reminding Wille about his responsabilities about being the crown prince. And his father.....useless.....simply occupying space....ugh
Wille needed to say all that to his parents. They've given him zero support through the same traumatic time they've been having. I kinda get where Simon is coming from, but I can't believe he witnessed how devastated and abandoned Wille feels, then turns around and deserts him too. We know they love each other, but they are terrible about communication and frequently lash out at each other or run away. Not the healthiest, but then they're teenagers in the midst of a crazy, complicated situation.
I don't think Simon is in the wrong. It's not fair to him to be the only source of support for Wille. He's a kid also and has his own challenges. I could see Simon's view of Wille change throughout the episode. (Like how he talked to that PR person.) In my opinion, Wille's outburst just showed Simon that it wasn't the best time for him to be in a romantic relationship. He needed to focus on his relationship with his parents and his view on his brother. So I would argue "abandon " isn't the proper word.
@@rachellara544 I think he also realized that he legit does not want to be included in royal life because there will always be something wrong with what he does because of who he is, and he sees how it’s hurt Wille which he cannot fix or will ever be able to fix bc it’s a family and status matter (which makes Wille lash out on Simon since he’s his only support person) so just imagine how Simon will be treated (the cake scene really hints at that and Wille also not stopping him also hints at how toxic it could become for Simon in the future) and him probably coming to that realization is scary in itself and is a fucking lot, he tried to be there for Wille and even says he’s proud of him for sticking up for himself but he can’t do this anymore he needs to leave for his own good. He’s so young being 16, that is a valid reaction. Just like if they were older this whole show would’ve gone a lot different

simon knew in that moment that as long as wille is a part of the monarchy he was totally gonna lose himself like, simon always saw him as wille and never a crown prince so seeing that side of his life (coming from a dysfunctional family himself) he just had to leave and honestly, there was never gonna be a "right time" to do that, just the sooner the better. i will defend simon and his decisions with my LIFE, like- the way he thought he did something wrong when wille wouldn't talk to him? fucking crushed me
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I actually hate Willes father more than the Queen. Don't get me wrong, I am not defending the Queens behavior in any way. She has been neglecting Wille and only focusing on his role instead of him as a person. But I also see a lot in her that we see in Wille: not dealing with her emotions, trying to follow the expectations this role puts on her until the pressure becomes too much and she breaks. I think a lot of the things we see Wille go through, she is going through as well behind the screen. She is the person Wille learned that from. There were a couple of times throughout the series where she tried to comfort Wille. She didn't handle it well, but she tried. And in this last season she finally reaches her breaking point and leaves Wille alone with the pressure that she herself couldn't handle. BUT at least she tried. Willes father never does. He always changes the topic or backs out of the conversation whenever it gets hard. The way he just leaves the room without replying to Wille at all makes me furious. Yes, the Queen is upset, but so is his son. Even screaming back at him or explaining his view if the situation would have been better than just running away from that situation altogether. The Queen leaves because it is too much for her to handle, but he is just avoiding. He really doesn't see Wille but only his wife. Also, that phone conversation earlier in the episode: don't tell your kid that the dead brother was perfect! It automatically implies that he was better than the child you still have and sets expectations that are impossible to live up to. Wille is slowly realizing that Erik was human too and that he he might have been far from perfect after all. But his father is still making him feel like he is being compared to this image of a perfect person. Those are just two examples from this episode, but there are many more throughout the series. Basically every scene that his father is in. So, even though I think, the Queen was never a good mother to Wille, she is trying sometimes and I can understand her to some extent. With the father I just can't.

I actually was hoping Simon would break up with Wille at this point as Wille was constantly giving him shit or the silent treatment, while Simon was only trying to help and be ‘good’ for Wille. Obviously the timing was pretty shitty tho haha
yes!! finally someone is bringing up the fact that wille treated simon so bad this season. every time simon brought up anything wille would just dismiss it. and simon was basically wille’s only support system which is stressful af. and on top of all that, wille refused to let simon go home after an uncomfortable day and manipulated him into staying, and then simon witnessed a huge outburst by wille which was probably super frightening to see. i have so much more to say, but ill leave it at this: i was so proud of simon after breaking up with wille. granted they wouldn’t have had to break up if they both just communicated to each other in a mature and respectful way, but by the birthday party fiasco, it was far too late for that

wille's been pretty shitty to simon throughout this season, people may view it as bad writing or out of character but it happened anyway so simon's right to get out of it
The peers being served by the first years is pretty normal, i mean i did so in my school nobody was disrespectfull its just courtesy and you get the same courtesy when its your turn but then again i live in a different country so it might just be that.
But I feel like at Hillerska, it's just another sign of "some people are just naturally more elite than others", just based on something that you can't control like age, reflecting their view on society and normal people

Yeah we've served our seniors before for specific functions but they've never been rude though. They would affectionately call us kids and help us if we needed anything. Years later we returned that courtesy to our juniors. We were even allowed to take the role for teachers for our juniors on Teachers' Day
At my previous school there was a ball for the year nines before they graduated and anyone from year 8 could serve the food IF THEY WANTED TO and then those who did that the year before could be part of the fest committee the next year. I think they should have done something like that for the graduation party instead of forcing all the first years to make and serve the food.

I don't think it was about "easier to remove yourself.". I think that he didn't see a way for it not to end in hurt. Wilhelm went after him this episode because of his own choices, and Simon also kept seeing how he had to deny himself. His ending things was ultimately self care, and I applaud him as painful as it was to watch.
I think watching that final scene for the first time a lot of people felt the way you initially did. You see Wille's pain and everything he's going through and you don't want him to lose Simon. You just want Wille to be supported and loved. And then the second time you think about it and look back you start to see that Simon made the right decision, even if it hurts.
I think Simon believes him leaving the picture will allow Wille and his parents to reconcile and start healing. He wants to get out of the way. He says before the cake scene, it feels like i shouldn't be here. He is only 16! And comes grom a traumatic childhood believing everything is either his responsibility or his fault. Staying to say i can't do this anymore is more than anyone could expect. It is surprising he didn't just leave after dinner!
I can understand why Wille didn’t want to tell Simon about his brother. Like he did this terrible things but he still is his brother that he loved very much and he wants to protect him. Simon didn’t know Erik, and Wille probably doesn’t want him to think like this about his brother. I have been in a similar situation were you don’t want to tell someone about something a loved one did because while you might be able to forgive them at a later time the other person probably won’t because they don’t have that history with them and likewise want to protect you
this episode was a roller to say the least, and i agree, the queen is just unbelievable. hes sat there telling her shes absent and she’s undermining him, its so frustrating

Thanks for a really good reaction on this episode. I agree with your first reaction of Simons acting in the end. It was just not the right timing at all for Simon to ease his heart at that moment. And then as well leave Wille in his fragile situation. Simon could have been just quiet that night and hug him. And wait to tell Wille his thoughts until the next day. Often the best is to ”sleep on things” even if the outcome is the same the day after. Also more credible to not leave at once if you really mean what you say, that you care about the other person that are in pain.
Wille went in on his parents! And honestly it was well deserved! Simon too needed to be there to understand why Wille was being the way he was! I'm so glad Felice and Sara talked things out! And I'm SOOO happy Sara didn't go back to August!

BUT wasn't this a moment where Wille REALLLLYYYY needed him by his side since THAT is also what one does when one's in the titualar 'love'? He has this HUGE baggage and if one isn't there in his lows then is it only for the highs? He came through when it came to Simonye getting attacked and all so he should be trying a bit maybe... I think Simon saw that Wille was hurting so much that he was also hurting Simon without meaning to. I'm thinking of how he shouted at Simon for wanting to leave because it was so awkward. Wille also left Simon alone with his parents while the Queen was having some sort of breakdown and never really apologized for making Simon feel uncomfortable. He's been extremely selfish for almost the entire third season if you look back. He doesn't pay much attention to how things make Simon feel in general. Wille needs to go back to individual therapy if that hasn't continued.

I am 100% with you. I cried so much when he read that letter. And I was shocked because I never ever would have expected that August would make me cry. And I do think you can feel for the boy he used to be, without justifying what he did to Simon and Wille. It makes me understand where he is coming from and also more willing to give him a second chance. But I wouldn't necessarily say that means I forgive him. Just that I accept that the way he has been treated has messed him up badly.
I was so mad about this episode! Even if the Queen deserves to hear the truth, Wille shouldn't speak to his mother like that. I was also annoyed that the second last episode ended with a break up. You can't leave us like that with only one episode to go!
