No, you do not need prior research experience, but it is highly recommended to have research experience.
In polling the R3ciprocity Community, I asked the question “Prior to applying to PhD Programs, did you have research experience at a University?”
63% said they had research experience (n=27). 37% had no research experience.
Why do people have research experience before joining a PhD program?
Selection. If you have been exposed to research experience, you are more likely to choose jobs that are research oriented.
Requirement. Some PhD programs will outright require you to have research experience.
However, in many doctoral programs, it does not make sense to have the research experience requirement. For example, if you are a PhD in Management or a PhD in Finance, you likely are going to have gone through the MBA route, and it is just not common to have research experience.
Does having research experience help you get into a PhD Program? Absolutely. You are much more likely to be taken seriously as a PhD candidate if you have research experience.
What Counts As research experience?
If you worked in a lab, wrote an in depth paper, or wrote a research report, this will likely count as research experience. Basically, most people are looking at whether you did a large project that was difficult to perform. The more that the project was your own idea, the better.
Here is the real reason why you may want research experience before joining a PhD Program?
The real reason is that you have little understanding of what is involved in the PhD journey until you actually do research. There are many things that you have to learn about yourself and what research is like before you begin. Doing research for 4 months is one thing, but doing research for your life is another.

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.
r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform
A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.
The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.

@6:30 this is how I got into research by volunteering a summer as a freshman of college. @8:00 In the US, there is an REU program. Now I am working in France, we have "internship" students from the undergraduate program )(typically for 5 weeks), and taught master's program (they have 6 months full-time research from the 2 years degree). I totally agree with the point of trying to get some experience in a creative way is essential, Ph.D. is not a suitable path for everyone, so it is wise to find out what to expect before committing to a Ph.D. program. Too many smart students ended up going through depression because of that!

Great video, very informative! I have a question. So I've been interested in pursuing a PhD, having finished a BSc and an MSc. The issue is that I didn't have to do a thesis in my BSc and I'm not happy with my MSc thesis, although I did pass. I've been very hesitant to apply for a PhD because of this, and am considering doing a second masters to improve my chances as an applicant. What would you recommend in this case?

Thanks for the info. Would you say it is still possible for someone who is graduated from university and working a full time job to get research experience?

Thanks alot for the info! I have a question in my mind however. Does research experience from a field get counted if you are trying to get a PhD into some other field? For example: Me trying to get PhD in astronomy while having research experience in physics or chemistry. Will that count?

Can I ask you a question? If someone had to withdraw from a Phd program because of prbation, can this person reapply to other PhD programs? Will the person's previous probation record effect future PhD admissions? Is there way to improve onself through publications before reapplying? How can one be a better applicant in case of readmission? Is there a way one can return to the same program after a year of withdrawal after a year to the same program?

The issue with this isn't that you need to know people in those fields. You just didn't expose yourself to ideas. learning things for yourself. You were a social sheep. lol
