From watching the Sorted Food videos, I have been able to expand my usage of ingredients in ways that I was too scared to try before. I have particularly enjoyed using mustard and honey in interesting ways. I have also challenged my mom and sister to each join me in a "use it up pantry challenge" to reduce what might be thrown away. We are pulling out the oldest stuff in our pantry and planning meals.

Man, I love that. Long may Sorted Foods reign. I think another foundation to their impact is making food/cooking fun and goofy and realize it’s okay for something to not be fabulous all the time. I was just talking to a friend today about the fact that his kids are all adventurous eaters. His key is to not use food as a weapon or punishment - you’ll sit there until you clean your plate - and he shows them how fun it can be to make their own butter or see how a salsa comes together from store ingredients.
@whydoineedanameiwillneverp7790
Don't ask me why - but when Ben said he has brought one physical thing that means a lot to him, I expected a courgette 😂 Maybe I have been watching too many of his courgette recipes, lol!

So many times I've clicked on a SortedFood video to have a few laughs and maybe learn about a new food only to learn about sustainable farms, fair trade foods and unique companies with a mission I want to support. Ben seems to be very well read on such things and aware of who is on the cutting edge in food production or ingredients. I'd love to see them expand even more to influence more folks to be mindful in their purchases and cooking options.

I have learned so much from Sorted, it’s kept my passion for cooking alive and my curiosity engaged! My Q&A to what would Sorted do is how would they teach the next generation. For me, that looks like fostering positive memories with cooking for my daughter. I always try to have my baby in the kitchen with me, smelling what I’m cooking, tasting things, shaking spice containers, and just exploring food in general. I’m looking forward to starting a part-time, in-home preschool this year where a big part of the curriculum will be cooking and gardening.

As someone who works in a big restaurant, when the food at the end of the night is left over, we are told not to give it to anyone. Especially not if we are wearing uniform because if someone takes it and is unwell or has an allergic reaction then my company don't want to be held liable. It's ridiculous.
@NamelessSmile
@NamelessSmile Год назад
It's not that ridiculous, as that would literally happen...and has
@V-O-V
@V-O-V Год назад
Sounds completely reasonable
@Shelsight
@Shelsight Год назад
It’s not ridiculous. If you really work in a restaurant you’ll know it depends what you mean as ‘leftover’. You’ll know that everything has stickers with ‘use-by’ dates on, vs ‘best-by’ which is totally different. You’ll know that ‘leftovers’ can mean multiple different things - cooked or uncooked, packaged, refrigerated or frozen to re-use. Most places allow those to be safely taken home by staff, or boxed by customers. That’s NOT the same as scraping leftovers off plates or allowing expired food or buffet grub to be sent home with staff or customers after 4-5 hrs+ on a table or hot-plate. Stop trying to insinuate negative shit from one innocent comment. Ben is as good a chef as they come, and SortedFood prioritises food safety in every video.
@jamesmowbray1837
@jamesmowbray1837 Год назад
@Shelsight why would I lie about working in a restaurant? What an unambitious lie. I know what you mean and I wasn't trying to insinuate that Sorted or Ben aren't committed to reducing food waste. I was merely saying that places I've worked in the hospitality industry are so scared of giving stuff away that perfectly good food, eg. mistakes, extras and the like, are being purposefully thrown in the bin instead of given to staff or the lime
@carrieullrich5059
@carrieullrich5059 Год назад
If you're in America, look up the food laws, there's literally a law that prevents anyone from suing a restaurant or other organization for donated food. Iirc its called a good Samaritan law, and its a federal law, designed to have a uniform standard so that corporations have the same law in all states as previously it was a mix and messy to give food legally. If you're country doesn't have one, a copy of the law sent to your law makers is a good place to start the conversation. A Google search for donated food laws will bring it up. ❤

I always wonder if it's really true that households have the largest amount of food waste or if other parts of the food industry are just incentivised to under-report it. Still a good idea to combat household food waste though.

Why Sorted Food is loved by everyone?? Because they are not claiming to be the masters of everything. They are cooking and having fun. If they are doing something wrong they are open to learn and apologize. And when they claim to do something authentic they bring in professionals who are masters of those particular cuisines.

What about Supermarket food waste? They reduce the price a little bit when the sell by is near and would rather bin it than give it away, I should know as i work for a leading supermarket chain!
@sirBrouwer
@sirBrouwer Год назад
that can depend on the chain it self. Here in the Netherlands the two biggest chains pride themselves in donating a lot of their own brand products to foodbanks. however it can be more of a challenge when it comes to products of A brand products. there it might be those companies that don't want to or require there food to be repacked so the brand is not showing. then there are other stores that use the food they do toss away to heat their distribution centers. often it can be complicated even if they want to. (as in the corporal top of said chain)
@dpchiko17

Where I currently work we have an app where food that's still good for a while can be registered on it and then sold for half the price and even better discounts sometimes. Most of it is frozen so it's not wasted when the expiration date comes It's stuff like that that's helping a lot
