I just found you while doing a search for Bromeliads. I love your videos! My son has these tiny jars that are filled with apple cider vinegar and any kind of dish detergent. Love this video, I have tried the hydrogen peroxide and the mosquito bites with no much luck , I replaced the dirt on all my plants and finally got rid of them, I now use a top layer of slate rocks on most of my plants. I’m glad I came across this video bc I purchase some granules on Etsy and it only advertised as a insecticide but no name or ingredients was given and I now see what it is. Thank you , that systemic houseplant insecticide works really good . My coworker plants were infected and I treated them with it. I learned a lot from your awesome videos.

They're attracted to Carbon Dioxide as well, which is another reason they fly all up in your face. A fan blowing across affected plants also heavily disrupts fungus gnats because they're clumsy, imprecise fliers. Good video!

Very informative, as usually Peggy. I take certain plants outside in the spring, and they stay out there as long as long as possible,some time around late October, or early November. Before I bring them back inside, they all get treated. And around that time I don't water them as much. You are right, moisture attracts them.

I am infested (again). I dumped the dirt from every plant 2 month's ago due to so many gnats and left all the plant roots in shallow bowls of water (yes, killed one plant). After two weeks of not seeing any gnats, I bought fresh dirt and repotted all of them. Now, I have more gnats than before and the dirt in each pot is alive and crawling. I will try the hydrogen immediately while I wait for the mosquitos bits to arrive. Thanks so much for the info!

Peggy this video was so helpful for me. I am having a MAJOR mealy bug problem (video coming soon-i hope lol) and that Bonide product you mentioned is on my list. I am going out tomorrow so I am going to see if I can find it in a home depot or lowes b4 I try online. Girl... you are helping me get rid of my stress right now. I have found mealy bugs on my chinese evergreen first, then my pothos (mind you never had a monster problem with those plants), then my heart shaped fearn, then my jade, then my croton, then my dracaena, and the latest is my begonia that was sitting next to my hoya publicalyx and lipstick plant. Everything has been sprayed/wiped with neem oil/dish soap/warm water mixture... or... my dish soap, alcohol, warm water mixture. I am stressing out b/c I swear anything white is a mealy bug. I have also used diatomaceous earth.... Ooh wait, I forgot those stinky monsters are also on my dieffenbachia and homalomena plants. OH GEEZ... not my Homalomena!!! I have to replace that plant (her name is Selby..poor baby, she has been through it 4 real). Anywho, thank you for this video. Mealy Bugs BE GONE!!!

What a mess! It's a nightmare getting rid of some of these things. I had to deal with spider mites and now gnats. I'm not totally convinced all of the spider mites are gone so I'm still treating for them. Like you, I think any little white fleck I see is a spider mite. I think we've been traumatized. Don't let the mealy bugs win!

Great video. I love the diatomaceous earth on my outdoor plants. I put some in a Parmesan cheese bottle and sprinkle it on. The only thing is when it gets wet and turns to clay. Have started bottom watering my outdoor potted plants. Also have used the mosquito bits but had to do the soak method since they were getting moldy. Hated look of sticky traps, so I have opted for cute tiny glass or ceramic pots or bowls with apple cider vinegar and dish liquid blended in among the plants. It’s been effective for me and I change them once a week.

Thanks for the tip to not move plants. I'd developed a habit of putting all of my small plants in a large drainage tray to water them so they're all getting close contact each other. I will water them in place for a while and try the peroxide mix in the water first. Can you re-use the water that has drained from one plant in watering the next plant or do you need a fresh solution for every plant? I've been using sheets of sticky trap that you can cut to any size and mount to a stick so there's some control over how close they get to the leaves. I find it grossly satisfying to see all of the dead flies on the trap, and it helps to identify the big problem plants. For me, a medium sized Lady Palm seems to be the worst culprit, and it's pot is crammed with small sticky traps right now.
@PeggysPlants
@PeggysPlants Год назад
I've never reused the water after it has drained through a plant. My thinking is the oxygen in the solution would be depleted. I could be wrong. Perhaps some other viewers will share their experience.

I’m going to try the systemic method...because I literally forgot I have a bottle. 🤦🏾‍♀️😂 I think we have to use a few of these methods all together because not just one gets rid of them. They can be some determined little gnats. 😩 Thanks for sharing all of the methods.
@PeggysPlants
@PeggysPlants 4 года назад
They are determined for sure. I think the systemic is my favorite once you get ahead of things. I'm a mess with the sticky traps. Every time I moved a plant, I would lose half a leaf to a sticky trap. I bought a box of 30 so I will continue to use them until they are gone. If I can manage to be more careful, I may purchase again. I agree, more than one method at a time really helps get them under control. Thanks for watching.

One reason why those yellow sticky things are yellow is because the fungus gnats are attracted to that color they are attracted to Yellow. So that's one thing the juice in the bottle I don't know about juice but I do know you can put apple cider vinegar and dish detergent in the bottom of a bottle and cut the lid poke some holes in the lid and turn that upside down in the bottle and it can catch some nass but it's really not that effective. I did not know about the diatomaceous earth I do have some so I'm going to try that thank you for that tip I absolutely love your channel I am subscribed and I do watch you I absolutely love you you're a sweetheart my absolute favorite plant is segontium I have seven different types I just got Maria and I am thrilled I like to buy mine small so I can be the reason they grow I have had a white butterfly for 11 months and it is so big I've took cutting after cutting after cutting and it just continues to produce for me it's Vining out for me and I am thrilled. My reason for this comment is I wanted to tell you there is a most beautiful way to catch fungus gnats if you have yellow petunias and you grow them in your home because the stem of the petunia is sticky and the gnats are attracted to the yellow. So once the fungus gnats land on them they cannot get off of them it works. And I know that you love beautiful flowers so I thought I'd share that information with you thank you for sharing everything on your channel I really enjoy watching you you are one of the few people that I always enjoy your information have a great day see you in your next one

I glued my sticky traps onto dollar tree popsicle sticks and put the stick in a shot glass or tiny jar filled with pebbles. Then place that near my plants. Lol. I don't put them in my plants any more because of exactly what you said....I've lost 4 leaves to sticky traps in the plant soil. :(

I have a small pot of small stones that I put those sticky butterfly strips in. I place it near my plants but not so close that the leaves will touch it. When I find that not many gnats are there, I move it to another area.

Hey Peggy! Great video! I'm a user of that same Systemic Pest Control and I've been considering DE, but I think I will be using it outside on my flowers and veggies. I'm a little too worried about using it inside with my animals. Would you consider doing a video about your orchids in semi-hydro? I was just soaking and feeding my orchids this morning and was like I really think I wanna do leca with these guys but wasn't sure if that's a good idea so it's really good to know it's possible. I would just love to see the steps for potting one up, especially a larger one with bigger root systems. I have a giant phalaenopsis and it is why I was thinking it might not work. I hope you will consider doing a video on how you care for yours. Also it's so lovely to see your face in some videos! Again awesome video! ✌💟🌿

Hello Lindsey! I will absolutely do a video on how I care for my orchids. All of my orchids on my screend porch and in my house are growing semi hydro and have been for about 3 years. They thrive and bloom with no problems. I have phals, vandas and oncidiums growing semi-hydroponically. My sister has been asking me to do a video on this as well. I will do my best to do it in the next couple of weeks.

I have the mosquito bits in a small donut shaped "dunk" that you just drop into your watering can and every time you water your plants, they get a dose of the treatment. Yes, very much like steeping tea, that's a good analogy. It works very well and each dunk lasts a couple months before it dissolves completely.

Thanks for listing all our possible defenses; I like that you offer the wide array of chemical to organic options. While I use chemical fertilizers for ornamentals, I use organic fertilizers for my vegetable starts. But I learned the hard way I should NOT apply alfalfa meal, my organic nitrogen source, until the spring warmup when I can leave young plants outdoors. I've heard that fungus gnats like to eat decomposing organic matter, so I guess the alfalfa meal was a favorite food.
