Learn how to get rid of scar tissue with scar tissue mobilization. Any time you have a surgery or injury, the area scars up. Scar tissue is great for healing, but then it has nowhere to go and can cause problems in the long run. Make sure to talk with your doctor or PT before doing this because you want the incision or injury site to be completely healed before you start.
To help break up the scar tissue, you can start with “warming up” the tissue in the area first. You can use a massage cream or lotion, but you don’t have to. Start off by pushing very lightly and make small circles directly over the scar. Then you can go up and down and side to side. Once you have done that about a minute, you can start pushing harder. This might be painful now, and you might feel some pops underneath. That is the scar tissue breaking up. It is normal and necessary.
Now you can actually take the top layer of skin and start twisting it up and down, side to side, and in circles. You are just trying to move that top layer around to break up the scar tissue from the layer below. Try doing this 3-5 minutes 1-2 times a day.

I had a tibial plateau fracture with compartment syndrome. It took 3 surgeries and 2 weeks in the hosp. When released it took 6 months to get to a cane. Now 1 1/2 years later i still cannot bend my knee. My leg swells in 3 hrs and locks up. Can scar tissue prevent me from bending my leg? I can bend about 70degrees first thing in the morning . I havent had therapy except after surgery. This is because i am poor and cant miss anymore work for therapy. I almost lost my house and went 6 months with no water. I am getting better financially so i will be able to go to therapy in a couple weeks. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Put a screw in the pad of my finger and after it healed completely I had a puffed up, highly sensitive scar in the worst of places compromising my grip strength in my left hand. (I can hold my weight up for 20-30 seconds right hand only but can’t even take my feet off the ground left handed from the pain in my finger) Using Doctor Jo’s method for about 1-1/2 months I can now barely feel the scar at all and it’s completely invisible to the eye! I truly can’t believe the difference this technique has made in such a short time. Thanks Doctor Jo!

Hello, could you tell me how long it took for you to feel 100% after your surgery? I am on my week 6 and still can't make a fist, can't bend my wrist or hold a mug. My fingers are sore. I thought this surgery was going to be way easier to recover from.

@@rosagroen2964 my surgery was on September. I am on my 6th month and even though my hand is way better, still is not 100%. If I just knew this, believe me I wouldn't do it. I'd rather keep my ganglion cyst but I also know everyone is different. Unfortunately, my experience wasn't the best. Hope you feel better soon

Doctor joe so my foot pain went away i thought it was a serious injury but no i feel much better i went back to running on Sunday but I've been feeling tense on the neck shoulders and arms when running now i know that is due to poor posture so do you have a video on back strengthening ? It is more likely scar tissue depending on how much rehab you did for your tendonitis. Do you stretch your ankle/calf/achilles tendon?

What about the scar tissue on my rotator cuff? How can I break that up or heal that? The pain never completely goes away. Everytime I do weight lifting exercises involving my shoulder the scar tissue ruptures, and the cycle starts over again. Inflammation, scar tissue, inflammation, scar tissue. Any advice? thank you.

Great video. I am a massage therapist and this is the most important type work I do along with releasing adhesion due to scar tissue. Thanks for teaching your work to the masses who are not into natural health. These techniques should have been taught to us as children. It took my many surgery's to find a type of bodywork that is meaningful.

I think it's working! Been trying this most days for about two weeks now, I feel like I can already see a difference (might just be a placebo effect). I feel like my scar is getting less textured. (My scar is a surgical scar from two years ago.) Hope that helps someone :) Edit more than a month in: I feel like it is continuing to help! I tend to do it right before bed, and I try to do it as close to once a day as I remember, but it's usually more like once every 3 days.

It was a 4 minute miracle. I was in so much pain last night that I did a search and found this video. Dr. Jo said it’s best with cream and the cream was on my nightstand. By the end of the video I was done. She said you could do it up to three times a day so in the middle of the night, I put my hand on my leg to massage the scar again and it was gone. So, is the scar tissue! I have so much more mobility now and I am amazed at how easy it was. I have suffered for 4 years. When I told my doctor how it has been immobilizing me, she said the pain is probably coming from your low back. I said no it’s coming from the scar tissue on my leg. Sometimes I get really aggravated at the doctor’s office. But Dr. Jo, I can’t thank you enough!

I've been told that there is possible tendon adhesion. I got cut and stitched on back of my palm, index finger (knuckle) and wound was already closed, however, i cannot bend my finger to the fullest like doing a fist and it is a bit swolen. Had my ultrasound this afternoon and i'm scared for the result as i don't want to get a surgery or cut again just to fix the possible tendon adhesion. I find ur video and so thankful that tjere is a hope , possible i can just lift the skin and massage the affected area. I,'m so afraid to touch it after the cut had been closed but after worrying that another surgery would happen, i tried moving it as mom told me to stretch and bend my finger and do exercises, and ur video of massage is so perfect. I pray that everything will be ok not only for me but to all who just like me is suffering and recovering. Bless ur channel.

I literally got a scar from a ingrown hair after it was taken out . It’s a small spot but now it’s a little bumpy and I hate that my skin darkens so easily naturally one feels bumpy others don’t but still it’s so annoying to half when I get a scar and the belly area is not a pretty thing gonna try this

I wish you were my PT! I learned so much more from your video than from my session with my PT who seems to not know so much about scars. I got a diagonal laceration 3 months ago from the middle of my eyebrow down to the edge of my eyelid. So much scar tissue underneath still that my eye looks a bit swollen. Can't wait for it to go away.

Hello😊 I was looking for advice and found your video and I'm so thankful. I had a nasty fall when I hooked my foot on a wooden board and went down like a dropped log hitting my face between my eyes and eyebrows on the door ledge. The nurse who removed my stitches said that I must leave it open and do salt rinses. An ugly scab formed and t'was quite hard. I decided to cover it again and it healed better. Because of where the injury is, its awkward to keep it dressed so keeping it open and applying arnica oil and gently rubbing to try and smoothen it. The oil softened the scab so i pulled it off last night. It looks and feels like a big blister and 2 little ones as well. The skin tore differently so have what I'd say is a patterned scar. I just held a hot water bottle on it and massaged the wound and applied some pressure. I could feel scar tissue moving. So I was on the right track and this video just confirmed that I I had the right idea only because I was trying to do my own thing🙈. Thanks again 🌹. From Cape Town, south Africa.

Will this work on a quad tendon I partially tore 2 years ago? I did some massage at the beginning when I had pain, and have been stretching and gradually building up my ability to hike and jog, but that knee still responds differently after exercise. It feels bulky compared to my other one.

I dislocated my shoulder 17 years ago and now I finally discovered the muscle that has never rehabilitated: my right infraspinatus. Finally I am doing external rotation the proper way, not letting my posterior deltoid to dominate. Most likely I have scar tissue there? How would I go about breaking that up?

Stretches and exercises should help break it up. If not, it might be worth talking with your doctor about an injection that might help break it up.

Got a surgery 1 month ago, and while the external scaring is perfect, I got an accumulation of fibrous scar tissue under the skin, causing this part of my body to be swollen, with a hard part under the scar. I really hate that, and would love it to disappear. The doctor advised me to do massage, but I don't really know what kind of massage I should do. Should I do those on the video ? Hi Dr. Jo, thanks for this video! Over 10 years ago, I had some very large (I think they were) pimples on my nose - they were an extreme, abnormally large size. They popped after a while (there was definitely blood), but when they healed, I know have some bumps on my nose from where they used to be. I assume this is also scar tissue? Would this method still work, even if the they formed over 10 years ago?

hey doctor jo, i recently got hit in the lip by a baseball and my lip spit from the inside, my inner lip was hanging out of my mouth, i had it stitched up and it has healed. the laceration didn’t go outside of my mouth. now that it has healed it feels like lump. it looks swollen but it isn’t, it’s just the scar tissue inside of my lip, do you have any tips to reduce the large bump of scar tissue? it makes me super self conscious. Hi! Can you make a video on how to release flexor tendon that got stuck on the scar tissue? I had my tendon repaired but there is no therapy since its on lockdown. My surgeon said try to force pulling it but its very painful. If there is any other ways to release them, it will be helpful.

i have that as well, i was attacked by a pittbull and lost full feeling in the top of my ring finger. the “squishy” area is where i lost feeling. it’s mostly fatty tissue, where the muscle or meat of your injury (in my case the finger) was lost. talk to a doctor about it, as i’m not at all qualified to tell you for sure. if it feels fragile, and you’re worried about popping it or reopening the injury, talk to your doctor or a surgeon immediately.

How soon do you do this? I had a partial knee replacement and physical therapy is very hard for me. I had a mua two weeks ago and my incision I guess came open and they put band-aid on it. But the physical therapist is always pushing down on my incision and it hurt so bad. What should I do

Thanks Jo. I have a question, I have 6 scars on my knee and the one on my quad tend is started to get raised, despite lots of manipulation and gel. I’m 9 weeks post op. Overall the scars are still dark red, should I continue to be patient with them or is it time to look into additional treatments?

You're welcome. Unfortunately, scars can take 6-12 months to completely heal, but if you are concerned, you might want to have your doctor take a look at it.

I had wrist surgery(ganglion cyst removed). Do you think this will help to make the skin more elastic again ? The scar is stiff and I can't bend my wrist as far as before.

Hi Dr. Jo. I have had issues with my lower back for over 20 years. I have made decent progress with stretching and planking/core exercises but still have pretty tight back muscles, especially after sleeping. I'm pretty sure that there is internal scar tissue/adhesion issues. Do you have any videos or info on massage or other techniques that could help?

I don't have anything specific that you can do yourself. There is some research out there now showing the the Graston technique works well for the lower back, but you would need to see a physical therapist in person and get evaluated to see if it is appropriate.

Hi Dr Jo, I just watched your video, thank you. I had plantar fascia release surgery 7 weeks ago and scar tissue has developed on both feet along where the fascia was cut. The surgery was endoscopic but the scar tissue feels like it’s where my surgeon cut the fascia. It’s really really sore to walk on. I’m massaging it all the time, rolling my feet on balls, coke bottles and anything else to try and get into it! Is this pretty much all I can do? It just doesn’t seem to be getting any better? Am I not being patient enough? Does it take a long time to resolve? Thank you.

You're welcome. Have you been cleared by your doctor to do stretches and exercises? General stretching and foot specific exercises should also help the healing and decrease the scar tissue as long as you are not on any precautions.
