Ayyy don't beat yourself up like that my dude, you also know how to make that thing sing and listening to you play guitar always gets me smiling and head bobbing👌 huge inspiration for me.
Great video as always buddy! Worth mentioning the compression added by RU-vid is about data compression, not dynamic compression. The process is very different, it does affect the sound but not in terms of dynamics! Thanks for sharing your tips!
Compression, no matter what the application, does by definition reduce data resolution when "packed". Compression does not change on an application basis. DSP (Digital Signal Processing) will absolutely 100 percent be affected by any signal compression analog or otherwise.
I think people will always find something that's the magic cure or the demon destroying tone. I'm a newer player so maybe I dont have any room to speak. But in my.limited experience bad tone comes from couple things. Not taking care of your gear. Not knowing how to eq an amp or your tone period. And the biggest one of all is basically your hands and your technique. I've thought so many times that oh something I bought wasnt what was advertised and 9 times out of 10 it's me and my playing and technique. Ps get your guitars set up every once in a while. Great video abel.
5150/6505 style amps were driving me crazy since they sounded pretty zippery. I thought it was my pickups since they're kinda PAF-y (Alnico II duncans) so I got a set of EMGs (no ragrets) and it kinda helped but not much. I eventually came to the realization that Peavey's are just voiced that way. I was listening to Havok's "Conformicide" and that's a pretty bare-bones record, they almost exclusively use Peavey amps. Lo and behold, it sound zippery and kinda clanky. I don't know where I was going with this comment but here we are. Lol but this video was super helpful in giving me more tips and tricks for my amp sims!
Hello Abel! Thanks for this video! This is really useful and now some things have become clear to me! If you don't mind, could you please tell me how best to set up the pickups on a guitar? I have a PRS Mark Holcomb 6 strings, with Alpha & Omega pickups.
nice video good tones , could you explain the electricity noise that is constantly there when the gate is lowered, is this normal in any way? Because when you actually start to play you can hear this noise coming back. This makes the tone more muddy right? Is there any fix other than the NS-2 and Gate in the plugin to minimize this hiss ? Thanks
There are times when I'd load a Neural DSP plugin up, and I don't like the way it sounds so I change the IR and it makes a difference (though that may also be because I just didn't fuck with the mic placement).
The amount of guitar players that don't realize the difference between brand new strings and even just a month old strings is massive. I'd change my strings weekly, but you know.... $$$. Great video!
@@juanaka17 oh of course, I'm only talking about when you're trying to get the best tone possible. In other words, when you need to record or play live.
Great video , I have a question on one of the riffs you had for will putney stl tonality . Simple question have you tabs to them cause it is the heaviest riff I have ever heard if not no hassle dude
One thing I need to mention. A lot of the tonehub preset sound muffled. Why? Because my guitar is massive Mahagoni in drop F with 27” scale. The lower the tuning the muffled it gets. That’s the reason most default presets don’t work for me. Easy way to solve this is to just push the mic more into the center
Excellent video by the way Abel. Very informative. I agree with everything you say. Quick question : about the gain level hitting the plugin, what's the difference between slightly clipping on your interface sometimes, and staying under that threshold but increasing the input gain on the plugin ? That way you don't clip either on your interface or your plugin, but your level is maxxed ?
you don’t wanna be clipping on either end. you should be able to get plenty of gain just from your guitar. watch misha mansoor’s video on guitar recording to see how he sets his gain and do the same process for your guitar. you should be able to leave the input of the plugin at flat where it is on the preset, shouldn’t have to boost it.
True, what I was basically saying is that for fear of peaking out most people stay to far from the peak, when you should be closer to it at the very least with an UAD interface. My DI signal wasn’t nearly loud enough.
I don't change my strings often because it's expensive, not because I'm lazy. A Solar guitar here costs 14 months of work, a Scarlett 2i2 costs a whole salary. Not everybody lives in the United States.
Great vid! How much does including an active DI box in the chain matter? My interface has inst/line options but any opinion on tone using a DI or going directly into the interface?
honestly a DI box never really made a difference to me but I’ve always have a “Hi Z” input on my interface, if you have that kind of input on your interface I wouldn’t worry about getting an additional DI box.
What speakers does everyone use for their VSTs? I have some "Multimedia Monitors" They're good speakers, but I wonder if they make all my VST tones sound a bit shit?
How do I work around the annoying noise that I get from either ground noise or feedback? If I turn in a certain direction it’s not as bad but I cannot for the life of me get a tone without having noise. A noise gate helps but then it’s hard to get enough sustain. Fender Squire Deluxe Strat Also going to put in high gain Seymour Duncan pickups. Will that make it worse or better bc they’re humbuckers vs single coil?
It sounds to me like a wiring issue somewhere in your guitar electronics, while some noise is normal due to high gain you shouldn’t have the noise in your actual tone. I’d see a guitar tech and have them go through the wiring.
Cables do matter. I really suggest not to skimp on a good cable. A great one is the Mogami instrument cable. Be sure to get the one with the special end that stops all buzzing when unplugging it from the guitar.
Very good Video. One thing that is also important to mention is. The people that play these demos are in 90% way better in playing guitar than the average bedroom guitarist who buys the plugin. I bet that you could play on dogshit and it would still sounds amazing. They don’t say “the tone is in your fingers“ for nothing 😅
But how are you plugging the guitar into your fingers though, Lol. I always love this tone comment, it is always amusing to me 😉 and made by people that have never played a guitar. Peace ❤
Just found this video trying to figure out why my plugin tones were so fizzy and digital sounding compared to some of the guys like Ola and such. I'm guessing the youtube compression might be the reason for this... Thoughts?
Double check the audio sample rate. I get fantastic tone just in PC speakers. Just make sure your PC motherboard can reproduce the sample rate. Some sound amazing, some sound like crap and some don't work at all. And double check the noise gate keep it just high enough to stop the resting hiss.
nearly a year late but my god does the 5153 doesn't behave like that in my AmpHub. Mine is super boomy and muddy. I have to bring the low to like 9o'clock if I want to have something half decent. I have 0 problems with the other amp models, but I just don't use the 5153 cause I just can't achieve a good rythm tone.
master volume and pre at maximum. boost with boss OV, drive in the middle and maximum level. change the irs something like ownhammers irs mesa os 4x12. add something reverb, and this should sound a lot better
The editing was fine. Playing around in the plug in and jamming. This is what it's like to use these things so it's fitting. Most videos are over-edited these days anyway.
i am new to plug ins i just got a scarett interface i am just scarett that into the stl abel will it still sound good i am not using qbase or recording software
How can you sound like that? I've got a scarlett 2i2 and can't get rid of static sound, I was trying out stl amphub and even using the gate when palm muting still hearing interference and is getting on my nerves, because riffs won't sound clean
Yeah dude! I got this weird sweat on my hands and every non coated strings go dull in like 5h or so. Switching to elixir really made my life worth living, lol. Too bad there's an shortage here in finland, cos' them strings fucking rule!
A lot of the tone comes from impulse responses and audio monitors. Some use mini systems, others use party speakers, I think a good audio monitor and goods IRs should make 80% of the tone sound better
Cubase and final should not add compression on your sound. As long as you export in the native format . RU-vid of course does so compression on your material
This is a huge one guys Check your pickup height. They shouldn't be too close to the strings, you'll get all kinds of annoying harmonic overtones that will make everything you play through sound like a kazoo. Lower those bad boys.
Other fact is your own personal guitar skills.. if you can't play fast, or do triplets and try to play them but they are sloopy, you're gonna sound sloppy. Best thing is to do the little things, like practise and warming up. Metal ain't easy to master.
For tracking guitar DIs, the ideal is that the signal goes from -12dbfs "PEAK" not Rms, to -6dbfs, maximum -3dbfs but not go beyond there. with that signal you can get the best tone from your amp sims. Input gain is the main problem, and where 99% are always wrong, since they record too weak or too loud. Most confuse Rms and PEAK levels, that's the problem, and it has always been said that you should normally record at -18db but Rms, which would be about -6dbfs PEAK reader from the Daw, more or less approximate. But not all interfaces are calibrated to give their best performance at -18db Rms, so that number should not be taken as a reference, but rather consult the interface manual and see at what level is the most appropriate to record.
