It's Wednesday which means another guitar lesson from me! Today is all about the half whole step diminished scale. This video is about a fantastic scale that can be quite hard to get used to. It's not like many other scales, has an odd sound, but is well worth the effort to incorporate into your playing.
Learning odd scales like this need not be difficult. If you always thinking terms of intervals it's much easier to view scales in relation to each other. If you just learn the position on the neck, they won't mean that much to you.
In this video I talk through the intervals of the half whole step diminished scale. I then talk through where to find it starting with roots on the E,A,D and G string. I then move onto the chords and arpeggios you can find within this scale. Finally, we talk about where you can use this scale.

This is part 1 and in part 2 I will cover start to show you the sort of ideas you can create with this mysterious sounding scale.

Great lesson and great sound. I love the tone you get with that Tele. It almost sounds like a hollow body a bit! Thanks!

Thanks Chad. Sadly, I don't have that guitar anymore! I really miss it. That Lollar CC did really make it have an archtop quality to it.

What jazz bands do you recommend to listen to?

For me, listen to some of the big bands or ensembles: Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and Count Basie. They all ran great bands. Guitar wise: Charlie Christian, George Barnes, Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, Kenny Burrell...I could go on! Singers: Ella Fitzgerald Other instruments: Louis Armstrong, Chet Baker, Dizzy, Charlie Parker and Lester Young.
