Hey friends, today I want to talk about the horse stance and how it can help you develop more willpower, leg strength, and hip mobility. I'm going to show you the proper form of the horse stance, indicators of doing it wrongly, and also progressions and regressions for different levels.

I have to say, it's interesting seeing so many people trying the horse stance outside of the martial arts community these days. I remember throughout grade school, middle school and highschool when I trained in Taekwondo and Shaolin kung fu, whenever people would ask me at school or out and about, what kinds of things we do in martial arts (because they want to learn something), I always offered the horse stance as well as one or two other stances as a foundation and beginning, then the kicks afterwards. Everyone looked at me like I was stupid and thought it was ridiculous. They said, "just teach me a punch or a kick". I would said, the horse stance is literally how you build mule like power with your side-kick, which I'll show you afterwards if you can do this. They would say, how long should I stand like this? I would say, try 30 seconds at first. They would do it and start shaking and say after 7 seconds, OW! I don't like this, and they would give up on trying to learn martial arts and return to their prior stance of making fun of me for doing martial arts. Keep in mind, this was the will power of middle school and high school kids.

i'm literally in the same boat and people keep asking me why i rarely ever get knocked down in sparring and with good defense from combined arts am so evasive good at parries and counters and never seem to even get close to being knocked out. And i tell them its all multiple years of discipline. Horse stance even works for stuff like muay thai and standard boxing. it keeps you on your feet. And it's good for checking leg kicks. And using push kicks and other stuff very powerful stuff gives you a strong base and if used correctly makes you 100 times harder to deal with.

I had a large friend group in college and several of us tried horse stance at the behest of our kung fu friend. I stuck with it and managed to get up to 3:30 after a lot of training. One of them stood up after 7 seconds and never tried it again, and we called him "Joe, the path of least resistance" after that.

Wish I was there. I have this weird completionist habit and would retry it until I reach 30 seconds. Don't know if I'd go for longer times, but seeing as this is the year I yearn to reach my current physical peak, I'd probably try my best to go for longer

Damn, first time i've actually heard of this stance as a tough excercise. (I've seen it in media and stuff, but didn't realise how hard it actually is) I recently started excercising again, and thought this would be a fun one to try. So, at your advice, I started for 30 seconds... jesus the burn. I made it, but just barely. I hate planking with a passion, and this reminds me of it very much, but I'll hold vast until I reach the 2 minutes from the video. And maybe I'll reach it for planking too, never got above 1 minute for that
@zawarudo384

Those people who made fun of you didn't deserve to learn martial arts because the first thing they should learn is discipline. I don't train martial arts but I do workout with calisthenics or body weight. The horse stance is an isometric exercise that really builds strength especially your legs given that in martial arts footwork is very important.

4:10 That random timer is such a great idea. From personal experience, not looking at the watch can make it harder. Once you reached the point when it gets strenuous, I tend to tread the amount of time left being larger than I can handle. Whereas if you know the remaining time, I tend to have an easier time pushing myself since I know "the end of the tunnel". Except on bad days if the remaining time is surprisingly high - then it is just as bad if not worse than not knowing it, haha.

Back in the late 80s I attended a Hung Gar school in NYC, and holding horse stances for long periods of time were par for the course. However, I learned the hard way that I needed to stretch my quads after doing them. I remember the day I could barely hold one for anything beyond a minute as my legs felt like lead. A guy asked me if I stretched, which I didnt. So I proceeded to spend around half an hour stretching my quads and I could not believe how it seemingly "cured" me. Stretching flushed out all the crap build up from my workouts. TLDR: Always stretch!!!!! Even after workouts!!!!

I've just recently started getting into calisthenics after years of being unfit, so this is a completely new one to me. I already love planks and how simple yet effective they've been, and I want to find all the best "no equipment, no space" workouts, so this Horse Stance move looks like its just what I need. I can go nearly 2 min on a basic plank now but I couldn't even break 30 secs of Horse Stance! Could this exercise be used as a "safer on the joints" replacement for squats/lunges (because no joint movement)? Or is that looking at it the wrong way?
@BaronLewdWickVonJunz
@BaronLewdWickVonJunz 2 года назад
I have been training horse stance now for about 2 weeks. Almost every day I have had three off days since I've started. My routine has been one minute horse stance 40 second break one minute walking hand planks 40 second break,1 minute twisting lunges, 40 second break, then jawzrsize. 1 minute, 40 second break. Repeat 24 sets. Then one day I did just flat out horse stance 1 minute 40 sec break 24 sets and ouch my legs are still aching so good. Also have been training Wing Chun so my legs are a little strong but I've been having troubles with my inner thighs and butthawks area. So I wonder how much is too much if I'm sore should I keep training the horse stance should I take more time off or should I keep on the sets I'm doing. I'm afraid if I take time off I'll lose the motivation to keep doing it. I don't mean to burden you these are questions that I ask myself. I do not have anybody to talk to about this. Thank you for making the video great vibes brother.

Do you know of the Haka? Such as the Haka the All Blacks are known for before their rugby games? A haka stance is basically the Horse stance. Maori men used to hold this stance for training. I remember training for our cultural performances as a teenager in the 80s, we would hold the Haka stance, at the same time, we would have someone hit our backs very hard with a Taiaha or spear. This was so we would develop conditioning that enabled us to hold excellent posture for an entire performance. It also crossed over as conditioning for our sports.

It should be part of the Strongman competition. I have heard people could hit 1 hour of low stance. 5 is hard enough! Maybe it could be called standing meditation.

I didn't even get 3/4 of the way through the video and so far this is the most condensed, useful and helpful video I've ever seen on mabu between 5 step vs 7 step, the dynamic of standing too high and how plumb your spine is, etc. I appreciate it greatly. Also, as far as the time thing: I stopped using timers and now only use my breath as a measure. I do other exercises and so haven't pushed myself to grow past a certain point in horse stance, but I currently hold for 68 breaths at parallel.

I've been practicing kung-fu for years and this stance is one of five used in every single thing that we do. I can confirm this stance really helps in both spirit and body

What's the other four?
@YaBoyUneven
@YaBoyUneven 10 месяцев назад
@@nugraha___ this is called smth like the horse rider stance (?), another one is the archer's stance, and the rest I don't remember their translation from chinese but we call them, Ma sik, Gong sik, Xiebu, Tai Toi, Pok Toi. The last two have to do with kicks. Otherwise they are known by some other names I am not used to.

I’m 37 and when I started doing this again trying to go back to my TKD roots. My right hip gets impinged and it hurts sooo bad lol. But I can still round kick ridiculously hard but just not at head level anymore.

Do not know if helps, but been practicing wushu for 9 year's and this is a posture use to build a incredible foundation, not going to correct or point out the errors, the experience tells me that every person is different, the posture changes, the height of the posture is different, even the position of the back is different (that for the movements we have to make and land in mabu/horse stance), but a minute of this every day makes a tremendous difference, trying to make the position like you do if accurate, and the way it's explained to get to that it's also very well explained too, happy to see someone to dedicate so much to something so simple Xiexie

That fire you feel in your heart is testosterone production kicking into high gear. Isometric exercises are proven to be the best at stimulating testosterone production because of the intensity of such long times under tension. Very helpful video. Thank you.

Is that a fact? That isometric exercises are proven to be the best at stimulating testosterone production? Any studies done?

He is not talking only about the feeling of the chemicals, but of a spiritual resolve and determination in tandem, which is evident in the title of the video. Chemistry cannot create willpower. That is an act of the will. Chemistry can teach us that we can do a tough task, but the rest is our own choice.

This is likely to be true but just as likely to not be true. I think it makes sense if it is true. Youre trying to squeeze or hold or your body thinks PUSH something that isn't moving as hard as it can. So yeah maybe it does honestly

Hello! Loved this video and your attitude on life. I used to play a lot of basketball, swim and ride horses, doing show jumps ever since I was a child. When I came into age and started university, I sort of drifted away from the body improvement club into the mind improvement club. Now I'm 29 and for the past 3 years, I've been doing yoga and trying to find consciousness. I've been making a lot of connections from my mind to my body, tracing back memories that have had an impact on my physicality. I've been trying cold showers and listening to wim hof and that's how I found your video. Coincidentally looking to start a martial arts practice as well. Was able to hold the stance for one minute and nine seconds !! I realized that if you stay connected to the four corners of your feet you can relieve a lot of pressure from the legs. Looking forward to learning more from you.

PLEASE GUIDE SENSEI Do we need to wear underwear while doing this stance..? , I STARTED DOING THIS STANCE AS EARLY MORNING ROUTINE SINCE 1st MAY.. I feel temporary pain in my testicles which goes away after 2 to 3 hours when holding the stance for 2 to 3 mins straight, I discussed this with my gym trainer according to him not wearing underwear is the reason as I don't wear underwear while doing this because i perform this just after waking up in the morning as first routine after getting out of the bed... And should i get checked..? MY BACKGROUND I AM A BODY BUILDER AND REGULAR DISTRICT LEVEL FOOTBALL PLAYER HOLDING AN ATHLETIC BUILD..
