It’s true, you don’t often hear how real teaching can be, I am on my PGCE journey and not 1 single lecturer has shared such experiences. I have thought about moments like this and what happens when things don’t go to plan, as you say you pick yourself up (all be it over time) and come back stronger. You might not even be the person you are today without that experience. You really do articulate your words so brilliantly and I admire how genuine and honest this story was. I have watched a few of your videos tonight, it had me deep in thought and offered a moment of personal reflection. Word has got round about the bullying that goes on via PGCE SCITT and also in the Universities. Very few trainees escape the type of bullying that you excellently describe. As a result, people don't want to do teacher training.

Your honestly is exemplary. Thank you for sharing this really confidence-destroying experience. You certainly have a growth mindset, you'll provide a great model for the children you teach.

So brave of you to share this story and it sounds like, if anything, it has made you a better teacher! There are always times in this career where you question the support you're given or question whether you want to stay in the profession, but I think if it's something that happens only a few number of times, it's probably worth persevering. I think you’re extremely brave to make this video. Congratulations on growing from the experience, it’s put me at ease to know that even if you have a bad experience on the course you can still do really well like you have. My first placement starts this week and I’m so nervous but I’m going to try and not be a perfectionist and grow from my mistakes.

Thank you for sharing; you did the right thing defending your children. Seems to be this guy was a bully more than a tutor. You should be proud of your journey and it certainly does inspire me. I am just starting my journey as a TA and hope to become a Qualified Teacher in a few years.

My mentor asked me “are you sure you want to be a teacher are you even enjoying this?” scarred me forever…

So sorry for you that you had to go through this but you were strong and came out on TOP. I also had a cause for concern raised by my mentor in my first placement. Luckily my university tutor was very helpful in helping me through it and encouraging me with practical help like going through my lesson plans to help them to be more in line with what they wanted.

I'm a SEN LSA and I go kickboxing. If I didn't go for it, I'd have felt burnt out very soon. Plus I'm starting my training in September (Scitt), hopefully it goes well. In the dojo it's all a family and it's so therapeutic. Every adult needs some activity that they like, build friendships and become better at night to get up for a brighter morning.

This video has helped my mental sooo much I have just experienced this with my school mentor and university mentor and have been feeling defeated all week😭

So glad my PGCE and NQT days are over. Bunch of bullshit at times. For real, for real!

I have had a very similar experience in my second placement. 2 weeks in I got cause for concern and university requires the school to give me 2 weeks extra to improve. They decided to let me go as the teacher shouted at me infront of TA and pupils and I took this to the head of the school and they didn’t support me 😩 doing my third placement now! Thank you for being brave ❤️🙏🏽

It is obvious that you care deeply about teaching and children. You need to flip this.....the people assessing you were YOUR teachers...after hearing your story here I think they need to assess themselves! It is obvious from the way you explain and how it affected you that frankly THEY fell short. You should have felt supported, understood and positive going forward from the meeting no matter how the class had gone. Awful as this experience was for you, you'll be an even more amazing teacher because of it. Keep your lovely chin up Miss P x

Hi! I’ve come from one of your other videos and wanted to find out more as I’m just starting my pgce next week.. I do feel that this seems a very unjust and blunt assessment. I have worked as a TA for boys who struggle with behaviour and wandering around the classroom sounds like a DREAM disruption 😂 I’m really sorry you experienced that as I feel like if it was a different observer that would have been a drop in the ocean and not knocked your confidence xx hope you feel better about it these days

It happened to me both diring the pgce and nqt year. Unfortunately, some schools are far from being supportive.

Need to be careful going into schools. Everything you do and say is being mentally recorded!! I felt the same as you for my first placement last year for secondary. I think tutors need to tell the truth, but some of them can be on the verge of being impolite or bullies. I think the lesson here is to just put on a shallow smile and nod to their feedback, and don't say much otherwise you can dig a hole. It also doesn't help that universities don't always give back up in these situations. You are being graded essentially by a third party and not the University (not sure how this works for schools direct). They can do whatever they want and treat you whatever way they want. No one tells you this going into your PGCE!

I wonder what kind of educator has achieved such a wonderful success that a trainee is so traumatised. It is not fair and very often the feedback is too harsh. Education is about leading and learning from mistakes not leaving such a negative impact. Thank you for the video, wishing you all the best.

Thank you for sharing. I am so terrified of something like this happening on my course. I haven’t gone into schools yes, but from late November I’ll start my first placement. I heard my first school is really nice and the ofsted a few years ago said the behaviour is very good! So I hope it will be a nice place to start training. Behaviour is something we all need to deal with at teachers but as you said it is hard. With all the other things to do behaviour management on top is one of the hardest things because it can create stress, especially for new teachers. It sounds like the feedback you were given was really hard. I think it is right for you to say if this or that was good for them, and that you know your students. I’m sure there are things that could have gone better. But I sounds like some more understanding in your feedback would have been more appropriate. You were a new trainee. You’re not going to get everything right. There was still so much to learn. It sounds like it was unfair to say the whole class was out of control because it sounds like that wasn’t the case. And again, I think if you feel like feedback is unfair it’s right to say how that behaviour compares to other days. It’s just ok to say it could have been better too. It sounds like they just really didn’t listen to you or consider the bigger picture. I think they were too harsh. Really sorry no one stuck up for you more at that time. You shouldn’t have been left feeling that way. I worked in a day school in China. In grade four there were so many difficult classes. One class in particular was so difficult because so many of the class were naughty. I didn’t have many BM techniques and even things we would use here weren’t so possible in the cultural / school context over there. I found BM easier In classes when it was maybe two or three students but once it starts becoming more consistently it gets really hard. In those harder classes i would spend more time on BM than teaching. It caused me huge stress but at least over there I didn’t have the pressures of observations. Literally no one cared haha! But the fact I had other classes that were so lovely and enjoyed the lessons I did told me it wasn’t just that I was a bad teacher. Moreover, I found out that all the Chinese teachers found those other classes really difficult too. Just it may have been easier for them because they could tell them off in Chinese and probably contact the parents which would scare them haha!

with Scitts when do you start teaching? Is it literally as soon as you start the placement? Do you do a lot of observing first? What’s the time frame? Thanks x

Fantastic, thank you for sharing! I had a similar experience but never had the chance to recover from it, my tutor told me to suspend and now have been due to return since April, can't find a school that is accepting placements atm, not all schools see students as key workers where I am. I just wondered, you said you fought to come back from your support and require improvement, what did you do? My tutor wouldn't budge on her opinion.

The system of the PGCE with constant feedback is an absolute disaster. They should just leave teachers alone and let them get on with it.

I had it happen to me and I left later in the course. No support from the teacher training provider whatsoever. I felt ganged up on by two main people. I came out a wrose teacher then what I went in.
