Resonators can turn anything into moody chords - from whitenoise to percussion loops. So let's geek out over them, and show what happens when you use resonators, dub fx and polymeters in conjunction!

I love how excited oscar gets when he writes. Too many serious Sam's out there trying to teach and be cool looking without substance. I never even thought about working this way. Now I need to see if resonator is part of standard or watching Oscar's videos is going to make me buy suite. I'm loving foundations 1 class. Just had to take a break was pushing to hard and burning out. Remember if your not having fun creating it people won't have fun listening to it.

The best way to show an example is to use noise and generate resonating frequencies on a EQ, you will see on the spectrum the peaks added at those frequencies on the EQ. This can also be done on various synths with resonant comb filters. Love this technique, it produces so many nice textures, to add more complexity you could process the result of the resonator with another kind of resonator like a vocoder :) Have fun and thanks for the Vid Oscar!

I think Oscar is just my favorite person teaching music on youtube that I've found. Almost makes me want to switch to making techno just so I can focus on learning from him, but alas, it is not what I do. So I find myself watching these videos for Oscar, not because I want to learn how to make techno.

Resonators are so much fun! I've been messing around with a resonator technique recently and though I would share it here: Pitch tracking resonator. Using Kiloheartz Snapheap, I could track the pitch of incoming audio and patch that into a resonator and then apply all sorts of processing (like distortion, delay, and pitching). I found it very fun to put my own voice through it because it sounded like a synth but I had immediate control over the melodic expression. I also had a lot of fun putting it over a guitar and other synths. It made for a very expressive synth-like sound.

When you're trying to 'dub out' a piece, I like to add a little bit of the filter onto the delay, and also, put maybe 0.8% or something tiny onto the one channel of the delay, so it all gets a little bit wonky and starts to sound like it's deteriorating as the time goes on.

🙂nice! After your recent dub techno stabs tutorial i nearly posted you might want to investigate resonators. They are amazing for Dub techno. It's so fun running weird percussion loops into resonators. Or using them to morph dub chords using vocoders (another technique you could cover).

I love this! I had some questions come across my mind when you pulled up Pro-L and the tonal balance reader. Would you ever do a video about what to look for in tonal balance and dB reduction limiters? I guess what I’m asking for is a loudness video lol
@OscarUnderdog
@OscarUnderdog 6 месяцев назад
I tend to see if i can get to around -8lufs on the pro-L, with a tonal balance curve that’s not too far off my reference tracks. If i can achieve that without making the limiter work too hard, I’m happy. Fairly straightforward:) but sometimes does lead me to crush my mixes a bit too much.

Love your tutorials! Quick question from someone who’s just gotten into music production - at 2:12 how are you hooking up the white noise to a key that you play? is it something you can do just in Ableton with your normal keyboard, or do you need any extra hardware or software? Thank you again for the amazing tutorials!
@OscarUnderdog
@OscarUnderdog 5 месяцев назад
Hiya! I'm triggering a synthesizer using the middle row of my keyboard! The synthesizer is set to output only whitenoise so that's all we hear then! In Ableton's top right interface there's a little piano icon that must be turned on for this to be possible, and the MIDI track must be 'armed' - i.e. the little red icon at the bottom of the MIDI track must be activated. Hope this helps!

Ok, I'll give it to all the normal folks out there: only we music theory nerds are okay saying things like "I add the 3, and the 7 which is the fifth, and then the 10 and the 14, so that's a ninth chord" 😅
@tezeta3725
@tezeta3725 6 месяцев назад
Tbf its not very common to speak in terms of semitones in traditional music theory. Usually you would only speak in terms of scale degrees. I think semitones are common in electronic music because thats what a lot of equipment and software uses to denote pitch. So the confusion comes in when you try to merge those two worlds and suddenly your throwing around numbers from too different pitch notation systems.
