These are wonderful videos! Thanks! At about 1:50, you say that the normal hopping configuration is to have the opposite hand on the seat handle from the foot that is forward. I’m just starting to learn how to hop, but I have gotten used to holding the handle with my left hand, even though I put my left pedal forward when I free mount. Will that asymmetric stance slow my progress in learning to hop? Thanks again for the great videos!
Great question. Riding in an asymmetrical stance is not going to slow your ability to learn to hop- and it also won't inhibit you from jumping higher. In fact the highest jumpers in the world all use asymmetrical stances. I learned to hop like you did, left hand on the handle, left foot forward. I found that when I started trying tricks a bit down the line, it felt better and made it easier for me to use my right hand- which is why I'm recommending it here. It's also a matter of preference, but most riders tend to agree that sym riding LOOKS better than asym does. Just as a final note: I'm glad I learned to hop with EITHER hand on the handle. In the long run, it has made my riding all but completely ambidextrous, which has been useful beyond words.
I’ve been hopping for a little bit now, including some SIF, I free mount with my right foot back but find it much easier to hop with right foot in front should I try really hard to learn to free mount with right in front or an I ok
what about a no handed hop. i noticed it wasn't mentioned but I figured it out by accident. i just clench the seat in my legs and hop the unicycle up a few times in place. however i do struggle with the one foot ride. Question. how long can a one foot ride be done? i did it 3 revs but i am getting a little stressed with not keeping the ride consistent or for more that 3 revs. is this ok or should i go for a longer one foot ride?
Hey, nice! I didn’t put no handed hop because it doesn’t really help with any tricks later down the line. It’s cool that you learned it anyway though! As for the one footed riding, once it clicks you can really just ride indefinitely. I think I’d be able to skrrt around my whole neighborhood with one foot. Just keep going for 3 until you eventually get 4, and maybe make little notes of what’s causing you to fall. Like are you falling off in front or to the back? If so, adjust how you’re leaning. I am getting it down and can do a longer ride one footed. i noticed a more level surface helps a lot. arching the seat back instead of nose up helped a lot. my streets are sorta banked in different directions. so it took some figuring out as that "sweet spot" can change depending on the surface and how its leveled. i got up to 10 revs recently
Is a longer crank usually better for flatland unicycling? I believe the one that came on my kh20 is a 137mm but im thinking about investing in a shorter one.
Brandon D 137 is fine, I started on that length as well. 125 is super nice for learning new flip tricks. The best advice I can give is try different lengths and find your personal favorite 👍🏻
