The one where the girl challenges him to not talk for 24 hours is actually pretty sad considering the implication from the note the boyfriend got is that the girl committed suicide, not just randomly died. I assume the one about the kid sitting by himself with no friends was implying the same thing, that with friends he wouldn't have committed suicide or done something otherwise dangerous.

I assumed (since these are annoyingly common in normally toxic relationships) that it was a 'love test' and through some twisted logic the girl had decided that if he could go 24 hours without NEEDING to talk to her, that he didn't truly love her and she in some way deserves to or feels like she must die. It's a made up scenario, but I can understand/relate to how warped and irrational your logic and reasoning can become in a mental health crisis.

I read that book, Danny!!!! In my recollection, she was a little girl who revealed it to her friend while they were on a swing set. It was one of my favorite stories when I was a child and so I passed it down to my daughter from my memory. I don't have the actual book, anymore, and I could have remembered the details of the story wrongly, but I am so excited that you know essentially the same story!!!!

It's a very popular scary story that's been put in several collections/short story anthologies, with a lot of varying details. The one I remember reading was called "The Green Ribbon" and was in the collection Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz. I love scary stories and folk stories for this exact reason! So many people have their own versions and they're very often passed around orally, as opposed to just being read. I recall hearing your version before, as well.

I think the girlfriend dying one was kinda sweet, in a weird way. She knew she was about to die and wanted to show him he could still live his life without her. 13:01 my grandma at the hospital because she needed a metal bone. Later, she returned again for metal bones numerous times but once because her lungs were black.. Ironically on the hospital trip before the lungs one she burned a hole into my hello kitty blanket and we have a picture of her in the hospital bed smoking! I have that picture as her contact to this day because when I got my own Apple ID I kept my moms number as my own for some reason. I don’t even have it in my photos but it’s her contact photo.
