Getting Dressed in 1848 - Prince Albert 

I think some servants -- such a valets and ladies' maids -- had to be people the masters and mistresses trusted implicitly. Because their job was so intimate, they were usually regarded as friends as well as servants. Quite a fine line to walk, I'd say.

I understand why Queen Victoria was so sad over her husband’s death. Such an intelligent gentleman, a loving husband and a good father too.

It is amazing how little formal fashion has changed for men. It's pretty similar with many changes of course but not that radical as women's has been.

Prince Albert was definitely ahead of his time when it came to societal issues and trying to figure out ways to make daily life better for working people. Lovely video.

This era marked the last gasp for color and extravagance in men's fashions for some time. Within another 20 years, the brighter, contrasting waistcoats would be subsumed in blacks, whites and other neutrals. And it would all get lost in dark frock coats and (later) sack suits that eventually eliminated a lot of individual expression. At least they still had top hats for a while!

The funny thing is that one kind of watch chain became known as an "Albert" as he was known for always wearing that kind.

The actors doing these productions are great. It's interesting to contrast this performance, to the one about dressing the 18th century gentleman. The actor played that man as a arrogant fop (and he did a great job! Without a single spoken line, just body language). This actor here conveyed a very different man, one who was more personable and kind, as Prince Albert was known to be.

There are men out there who dress elegantly or have a vintage style. They look so good and handsome.

I was surprised by how much “Albert” dressed himself. Somehow I expected his valet to do up all the buttons, lol.

The man that portrayed Prince Albert in the video is quite handsome

Interesting note about the watch chain. This sort of watch chain is actually named after Prince Albert and is called a single Albert due to there only being one side to it. A double albert would have two ends. At one end is the watch, at the other is a key for older watches though in later years men wore a double albert and kept other things attached to the key end. In the middle is often a fob, one of the few articles of men's jewelry that serves absolutely no purpose other than decorative. Fobs often indicated membership in a club, profession or military organization. With the invention of the new kind of watch that did not need to be key wound, Albert began wearing the single Albert chain named for him. I don't know if he invented the single Albert or if he simply popularized it. Probably the latter. Since he would have had the most up to date modern pocket watch he would have switched from double Albert chains to single Albert chains as soon as the keyless watch was invented and available. I am glad they accurately depicted the type of watch chain he mostly likely wore at tis time period.

Optionals: Quizzing glasses (for scrutinizing society) and a silk top hat! 🎩 Men had so many layers and accoutrements for his wardrobe back in the day. Now it's simple suits and old slob clothes!
