May I recommend Sir, before going further, that the car is given a thorough underbody and engine compartment steam clean to remove all the dirt etc., then allow the car to get really dry before treating the box sections, doors and the entire underbody with Dinitrol 4941 rustproofing fluid. The original build quality of the car is such that, with care and solid maintenance, it will outlast the ancilliaries. Also, keep its originality by having the calipers etc. professionally overhauled, again their quality will be considerably better than aftermarket exchange units. Once you have the car up and running, change the fluids after just a few hundred miles to wash out the deposits that will have built up from standing and previous lack of timely maintenance. The running gear (including the engine and transmission) are relatively 'bomb proof', and with careful usage and maintenance will continue to give good service. Have any rusting panels cleaned and professionally sprayed - also, thoroughly wash and detail with the correct polish and machine buff to remove the paint oxidation. Keep up too with the rustproofing on an annual basis, the car will go to 60+ years if well cared for. LOVELY to see a nice older car that has such individuality and character!

The horn would clog up with snow and stop working if the horn grill wasn’t solid. The car is built for Scandinavian conditions. Volvo safety. 😉

Nice work. Cars this old, with that amount of dirt and mud caked on will inevitably need every system looked at. BUT. The compensation will be having a beautiful car that is a joy to drive. I still say that original paint is gorgeous. Green, metallic and iridescent. I hope you can find matching paint. BTW I learnt a hard lesson on my 940 recently. I hope it is appropriate to relate here. The 940 wagon just stopped. Engine will crank but not ignition. After checking the spark I decide it's fuel. Replacing the tank pump seems best. I swear I struggled for ages to get the big tank plug out through the access plate in the body. IMPOSSIBLE. So I get under to drop the tank just a little to provide space. It worked. Now I see the tank needs cleaning out. So now I will need to remove the drive shaft, as recommended, to actually remove the tank. On conceding that I must remove the drive shaft I realise that with the tank fully out I will be able to reinstalled the repaired plug before reinstalling the tank. Hurrah! Then I realise that if I had removed the drive shaft then removed the tank the plug could have been removed in all of 10 seconds. In contrast to the weeks of attempts to get it out through the access plate. Sigh. Lesson learned, just do what the Volvo manual suggests. It will make life easier.

Very cool. Our 164 restos are in a parallel universe, I think mine had been in water for years due to the rust but I replaced all the flexible brake hoses, the calipers, rotors, front and rear bearings and master cylinder. I also rebuiklt the brake proportioning valves. Not expensive or time consuming at all LOL. The fuel tank had 7 gallons of icky gas in it so it was drained, removed and tortured with muriatic acid before sealing it with this goopy stuff. Everything has been removed from the car down to a shell for cleaning and painting. The engine got a new clutch which was not cheap. The car is now waiting for bodywork but its below 30 degrees in South Eastern PA.

Yep, optional. But as far as I know, not available in the U.S. My father had my uncle, who was living in Switzerland, send a set out to us for our '73. Standard size? Ehhh...one of mine was broken (sister rear ended someone). I had a hard time finding anything to fit. Luckily my father found a spare in his parts bin. I believe they are 5-inches. Super cool to see your work. My second car was a 164 B30A 1971. Identical to yours. Bought it 1979 and had had it for 9 years, drove it every day - say when not rebuilding :-) I "upgraded" to look 1974, with grill the large bumpers and horisontal tail lights. Took doors from a late 240 model with power windows etc. Fitted right on. I live in Denmark so wintertime roads are salted, causing lots of corrosion already when I bought the car. Love to watch this. My dad hade one of these. A california white 69. He bought it in 78 and sold it about 5 years ago for parts (sadly). He drove me home as a newborn in it in 79. When I got my divers license, that was the car i drove and actually outraced a few Golf GTi:s (New cars weren´t that fast back then so an in line 6 would get you pretty far). I kept some memories though: the gear knob that looks like an 8-ball and the owners manual. There is a swedish site for american and old volvoparts: VP outoparts. You might have found it already as well as the swedish Volvo 164-club that might be able to help you out if you need anything. I look forward to the next vdo. Keep it up and good luck from Sweden!

Nice work! I seem to remember these cars being prone to a synchro whine after many miles. The sound didn't really indicate much besides a bit of wear, and function wasn't affected on the ones I've experienced. One point I discovered was the importance of good electrical grounds, learned in a dramatic way: the clutch cable broke, and the broken ends had a whitish look. You guessed it, the crusty grounds wouldn't conduct well and the amps chose an alternate path, burning through the cable.

@DavidBello
@DavidBello 3 года назад
This is something I never noticed. Since the Dots are uniformly the same distance from the valve stem and the welded section of the rim circumference I imagine it’s intentionally the correct spot. I read on tires-easy.com just now: “The red dot may be aligned with a ‘dimple’ on the exterior of the rim. This indicates a wheel’s low point and should be adhered to in the mounting process. By pairing a dot with either the lightest or heaviest weight area, you will achieve the optimum balance point during installation.” Guess ‘wheel’ find out when it’s driving next week 🤞

@jjmac3561 3 года назад
@@DavidBello The red dot is the 'high point' on the tyre, it should be lined up with the 'dimple' on the wheel, which is usually where the wheel is drilled for the valve. Then the wheel should be inflated and balanced. A quick search of images in google will confirm that's how they should be fitted. It is also a handy reference for when someone comes back in a couple of days complaining that the wheels are out of balance. The red dot will be at a different point on the rim because they have given the vehicle way too much throttle before the tyre fitting lube has had time to dry.
