Dispelling the myths and showing you the process of getting measured for a bespoke suit at Jeff Banks in Savile Row. Check out the full story on the blog: www.thatdapperchap.com/2016/09...
Hi, thanks for your question. It's all about cost. You get the same service and quality as other establishments on Savile Row but not the same hefty price tag!
Hi Saul, a made to measure suit at Jeff Banks starts from around £600, bespoke starts at £800. In other stores on Saville Row you can expect to pay upwards of £1,500 or more!
That Dapper Chap I’m gobsmacked! I bought an off the peg Yves Saint Laurent pure new wool suit 30 years ago and it cost me £300! Sounds like awesome value to me. What is the difference between ‘made to measure’ and ‘bespoke’?
muppetnumpty65 Made to Measure utilizes a pre-constructed template that tailors will adjust from up or down a certain degree to fit you. So if you have bought a suit before off the rack and had it tailored - whether its tapering the pants, slimming the coat, shortening sleeves etc. - these measurements would be done to a standard template to now fit your body. I.e. the template is measured and made to fit. In contrast with a bespoke suit the suit house will create a template (called a pattern) for your specific body and then make the suit for that pattern making it truly the best fit for your body. In terms of buying a suit there is no better way than bespoke but it is also the most expensive due to the amount of labor that goes into it.
The trouble is, that it seems like the Tailors are measuring for a much smaller person... You can plainly see it when the new, Bespoke suit is finally made and ON... I don't know much, but I can guarantee anybody that today's "skinny suit" is gonna be yesterday's "bell bottom Polyester Leisure suit" altogether too soon.
The tailor looks like he should have a Canadian accent. Even though i understood him clearly, it took me a good 20 seconds before accepting that he did in fact really speak like that.
Bespoke ? no, Made to Measure. A bespoke suit is handmade, and take 50 to 100 hours to make, while a mtm suit with some handmade operations takes up to 12-15 hours. Bespoke price start at 1500-2000£ in UK.
exactly right. They are using a pre-existing pattern and applying his measurements. Bespoke creates his particular pattern. Also, we don't see them fitting with the canvas
but the point is that you can make it whatever you want it to be with bespoke. Say a velvet collar on a tweed suit, a scalloped pocket with a button, one man I knew wanted a swallow tailed coat. Also, I suspect the made to measure do not have the canvas shaping the way a bespoke suit does.
That’s cheap if it’s only 2000£ starting price. My tailor actually travels to the Himalayan mountains and plucks the cottons and butchers the alpacas himself then washes, colors and weaves them by hand and makes the fabric patterns in his cellar, it takes him 4 years for a single suit costing from $98k. See we can all be be ridiculous about it. Just like a proper douchebag.
I recently enquired about a three piece Charcoal suit at Dege and Skinner on Savile Row and there prices start at £5500.00p approximately. I struggle to see how it could be 10 times better fitted than most rtw. My tastes always change, but if I had it to throw around!
oh okay. thanks a lot for replying to me I know that was a very basic question. I do own suits (well 2) and think they're both double breasted in that case. Duly subscribed. Thanks.
A bespoke suit from Saville Row should be evident by how well it fits the wearer. If you need undone sleeve buttons to show bespoke, you don’t know a Saville Row bespoke suit by sight.
Whilst this was very informative and interesting I find it a pity you used a double breasted order to make the video when singles are far more popular at present and I guess relevant.
