While sleep patterns change as we age, aging itself does not cause sleep problems. However, many of the things that accompany aging, including medical conditions and certain medications, influence our ability to sleep. Sleep disturbance can make memory worse, slow response time, and make it difficult to sustain attention, which can easily be mistaken as signs of dementia. Dr. Sonia Ancoli-Israel, one of the world's leading authorities in sleep disorders, talks about how and why our sleep patterns change over time and the impact this has on our overall health. I am 70, walk when I can, eat healthy foods, and and even though I have to get up. 2-3 times a night, I sleep well by breathing deeply and slowly, and focusing on the physical feelings in my body instead of what my thoughts are. Mindfulness exercises and meditation have helped get me ‘out of my head’, and help me to slow down my energy levels. Doing this, I now usually fall asleep within a couple of minutes.

The only thing which interrupts our sleep are our thoughts, so focusing on the physical feelings in our body is key. That was most helpful. Thank you Denise.

It is tough to Exercise Properly when eating like pigs & dogs - but using 100% of a GoD given Brain is necessary, if Good Health is desired to Be Happy with LOVE But It takes Self Focusing Discipline and Knowledge by Researching what is Healthy and What is Not Hidden & What is NOT.Healthy is also Not HIDDEN either. Depending upon others will only make You (Lazy & Cloned) with a Label called the Mark of the Beasts (By the developers in Frankenstein’s MonSatans Labs) owning Patents ... But Everything is a Choice Which Represents The ⭕️ Which Means, we either learn or die to be born again .... as One Circle Represents Starting All.over again (from Dogs pointing at Gods) in the Mirror, is the Karma that we all Fear.

I found calming a racing mind which was keeping me from falling asleep was mostly solved by listening to audio books...especially ones I've listened to before. A bedtime story without dramatic music or sound effects. I set my Kindle for 30 mins and only rarely hear it stop.

I take Melatonin and valerian root and still sometimes up 2 and 3 nights at a time before getting a good night's sleep,it takes me hour's to get to sleep, I have depression,pain, noticed short term memory at 58 I'm lucky to get 2-4 hour's

I couldn’t stop smoking until I could retire because quitting nicotine has always interfered with my ability to sleep. I couldn’t function without sleeping. Now that I’ve quit and retired my sleep is terrible. I can get to sleep initially if I go to bed at 9 or 10. Then I wake up in 2-3 hours and can’t get back to sleep until 6 or 7 in the morning.

It’s like working for a boss ... been there - done that and finely learned, that good healthy habits take (Discipline, Focus & The Vehicle UWE) are traveling in for Longevity. Just like driving on the highway in a Vehicle, if it’s Smoking - it needs Love, Attention & Purpose to Survive. Getting fresh air each day is a must. No fresh air in the home can cause too much carbon monoxide. Makes you sleepy during the day. Having a daily routine helps. Severe pain causes sleep problems. I don’t wake for entire 8 hours and hear nothing. I’m 70 years young. Obviously, have gone through menopause. I have chronic pain but take very little medications. Caffeine doesn’t bother me and neither does nicotine. I still sleep soundly and don’t move while sleeping. I do have hypoglycemia. Completed the 4 hour glucose test in my 30’s. I do not have the type that gradually becomes diabetes 2. I’ve always been a night owl which I was always tired when I had to wake up early for work and it didn’t matter what time I went to sleep. I’m 70 years old and I know I’m very fortunate. I can finally stay awake later without waking up to an alarm clock. People who fall asleep shortly after they eat may be because their blood sugar drops which can make you tired. Less carbs and sugar and more protein helps.

My thoughts exactly. I sleep by instalment, two hours, wake, then one hour and wake, etc. I just cannot get a stretch of 8 hours like before.

I also have this problem and I am 79 I can be disturb by the smallest sounds. I am in far too much pain to get a good night sleep. Not everything she said is not always true for all.

She didn't mention that magnesium deficiency can cause restless leg syndrome which I suffered with for years until I found that rubbing 5 squirts of magnesium oil on each shin got rid of it within seconds. Eating magnesium-rich foods e.g. green leafy vegetables also helps and I rarely need to use the magnesium oil now. You can get magnesium oil from your pharmacy or Amazon. If deficiency is the cause there's no need for medication.

Indeed, she didn't mention much root cause removal but good talk anyway. Keep using magnesium as even organic soils are depleted and fluoride which is everywhere, even in medications, also depletes magnesium amongst other negative effects.

I don't allow sleep to bother me. At 66 I sleep when I want.. I eat when I want.What I want. Light eater... Lead a very simple lifestyle.

Finally, I found someone with my own thought process. However, I don’t fall asleep unless I want to. I still sleep 8 hours at a time without waking up for a bathroom break and I’m 70 years old. I sleep deeply. I don’t even hear my phone.

If one has sleep apnea, bad dreams, etc., it definitely interferes with sleep and impacts memory, physical functioning, falls, mortality, etc.

The earlier one sleeps, the less amount of sleep one will require.The earlier hours ( from 9 to 12) are double more impactful than hours after 12. The best sleep is had if one can dine at 7.00 or before and go to bed no later than 10.00 ( I have seen it in personal life). In the morning work hard or have your morning walk/ exercise completed before 7.00 am because that walk causes much more deep sleep than that in other times.Preferably walk by looking as much time as possible by in the bright sky close to the sun because that suppresses the melatolin that time but makes it flow like a flood at 9.00 or 10.00 pm .

How about taking, within half an hour before going to bed, 3 x 300 mg Magnesium Bisglycinate and 1 x 50 mg Zink Bisglycinate? A great combination for sleeping thru the night, in combination of the bedtime routine Dr. Ancoli is talking about. Also rubbing magnesium lotion on the legs before bedtime may help by restless legs. Eating magnesium rich food like, banana, avocado etc, will help you by getting a better night of sleep. Furthermore meditation and focusing on breathing will clear the mind and calm down your system. Make it a habit while in bed, just for a few minutes.

@@djondjon Hi, Well, Magnesium Bisglycinate is the only kind of Magnesium that, next to the muscles, also gets to the head/brain and therefore it may help to decrease fatigue. Zinc supports the immune system but when your body has a shortage of this mineral, then that can result in fatigue. So you take the zinc to support your immune system at the same time you take the Magnesium Bisglycinate. Next to the wonderful suggestions in the excellent video presentation (and my above mentioned dietary suggestions)

Surely, I believe and always like to sleep well every night (sometimes when I don´t work so I sleep one or two hours after lunch and then take a walk for 5 k.m) A Swedish friend of mine said: You have gift from God so you can sleep a lot :-) Thank you for sharing - it is good for me :-) to continue sleep well. I disagree with a great deal of this. My husband, 71 takes 10-12 medications: diabetes, high blood pressure, mild depression, sleep apnea and the list goes on. He sleeps7-8 hours nightly not even getting up to pee. I, 67 take absolutely no medications at all and not always, but there are a lot of nights when I don't sleep through out the night. I excerise, I walk 20 minutes a day, I fast for 16 hours, and don't eat red meat, fish, pork or chicken. I sleep and feel most rested when I sleep in the morning hours. It's 3:07 am as I text this. Wide awake!

Very informative. I will replay this again and again till I absorbed much info to help me have 7 to 8 hours of sleep. At 7 pm while watching the evening news my eyes begin to close ready for sleep but I have to stay awake for an hour then eat desert and drink and 8:30 already in bed . Listen to music, pray or read a note from iPhone. Sleep well and at 1 or 2 pee then sleep but at 5 totally awake. We always take 2 hour siesta. Age 77.

At only 67 years old, you would benefit from walking more than 20 mins a day. Try three x 45 mins a day (morning, noon and evening) and your body will be ready for sleep.

Try eating fatty red meat, fish, pork and chicken. Your body and brain need the fat. Chuck the carbs except broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, cabbage, mushrooms and onions (anti-inflammatories and other amazing properties). Get your body getting its energy from fat and not carbs. Sugar and grains especially should be thrown out. Add vegetable oil. Chuck it. Butter, olive oil and eggs and bacon - all musts. Give it a couple of weeks. See the difference to your general health and demeanor. Beware, however, of craving for the old ways. Give it time. The body will adjust. This is how humans have always eaten. How the body is programmed. Wheat and grains, starch - all are processed by the body into sugar. The body can't tell the difference between fruit, honey or granulated sugar. Fruit has been engineered. 200 years ago, bananas were little green things and bitter. Apples, too. We are not meant to eat fruit.

I'm 59 years old and have to get up and get ready for work at 6:30 a.m.. Unfortunately, I'm already waking up around 3:00 a.m.. That's it, I usually can't get back asleep. I'm tired during the day because I only get an average of four hours of sleep a night.

When I wake up in the night I just switch the radio on so concentration on whats being said makes me drop off again. I can do this without opening my eyes. I never close my curtains I hate waking up in the dark it makes me feel depressed. I like to go to bed when it is dark and wake up when it is light. I am out in the day a fair amount too and I like gardening when I have enough time. I am finding this talk very interesting.

Excellent presentation. I fall asleep very easily and then it depends, but I might awake in at 2 or maybe 4 or sometimes even 6. I could go back to sleep but I love to get up and then-- it's like no one's awake around me or in my community but me-- and I can feel the quiet and the calm and I like to just putter around and do a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Usually if I have a little something to eat-' which --if it's yogurt-- is great cuz it doesn't get into my teeth -- & I can go back to sleep easily, tho not always. I do believe I'm a night owl and would love to live in Spain and not go to bed til 2 a.m. and get up about noon. I'm semi-retired so I guess I could do that but I feel guilty when I sleep in even if I haven't gotten to sleep very much in the night. Ironically my best sleep is in the morning and I have great dreams but I have read the REM sleep occurs early on in the night -- maybe the first three or four hours are the deepest sleep & the most important. IF I go to bed at 9 and I waken at 1 or 2, I have fun puttering around in the quiet of the nite but it does make it harder to get back to sleep, especially lately. In all events, your talk was interesting I'm still NOT sure if I'm going to be changing my habits. I wish I knew if genetically I really was a night owl and then I would just go for it and stay up till 2 which I've read a lot of famous people do & a lot of artistic people and writers do as well. I love a bike ride right before the sun sets but I will no longer wear my dark glasses. I do have a question: long ago I read that nuns are forced to waken between 2 and 4 at night because those are the hours when the mind is supposed to be most clear & most conducive to a very spiritual state of being. DO you know anything about this? Thx

Buy a Treadmill !!! Place it a so you can see outside. Open the window when it's warmer. Use the hand grips to build confidence & slowly build up your body to enjoy the effects of full oxygenation. I'm 76 & I do a daily workout. Sometimes 20-40 mins, sometimes longer with no incline until I reach 5km/3 miles. Set the speed to suit your ability. Feel the joy as you see yourself improve, & NEVER BE IN A RUSH TO DO IT ! Good Luck to all you Treadmill Warriors ! 👍👍🎯🎯

With the restless legs you need cut sigar and eat yeast which have a lot of B1.The B1 also unblock seratonin and you will sleep like baby

HRT with bioidentical hormones does NOT cause cancer! In fact, per Dr. Dale Bredesen- leading expert on Alzheimer’s, HRT as above, is neuro protective.

m R - completely dependent on WHEN bio-identical HRT begins. IDEALLY - begin it... with professional overview - during peri-menopause & continue thru out menopause & even after menopause. In this case - when begun early enough - the estrogen receptors in the body will stay active and intact - the exogenous bioidentical hormones will go where they are supposed to in the body. BUT, if any HRT (bioidentical or otherwise) is started too late- generally 2-5 years AFTER menopause - when estrogen & other androgen receptors have begun to weaken and shut down - in THAT case - the exogenous hormones are left to circulate in the blood and can end up in the body where they can promote excessive cell growth , i.e., cancer. So, it's not the case that bioidentical HRT will not promote cancer, just because they ARE bioidentical. It is entirely likely that bioidentical HRT will not promote cancer if begun when estrogen receptors are alive and well, i.e., are properly receiving exogenous hormones and directing them properly in the body. Once those receptors shut down, however, Watch out! The likelihood of developing cancer increases if hormone receptors are no longer active, no longer exist, and the exogenous hormones begin circulating in the blood where they don't belong.

7 hours of sleep? I get between 1 and 4 hours a night, and have for the past 4 decades. I don't fret, but I just lie there awake. I don't drink alcohol, don't smoke, only have a single coffee two mornings a week. Melatonin and valerian do nothing. Totally dark environment. Nice quiet seniors' building. Very well controlled comfortable temperature. I rarely look at the clock, but when I do, my guess of the time is always accurate. This is not a case of sleeping longer and only "feeling like" it's less. Trips to pee are not a problem. I am so physically tired that I have to spend 10-12 hours in bed. No psychiatric issues, no depression. Daily outdoor walks of at least an hour. I really envy anyone who can get 6 or 7 hours!

Me too, I’ve tried all those things they said that will help you to go sleep but nothing, I only took sleeping pills 2 years ago for only 3 nights and I didn’t try it again until now, afraid of possible effects on the body, I’m deprived of sleep for 30 years already and I’m 54 years old 😔

I get sleep problems when I am not physically active enough. I rarely have insomnia as I have busy days. I do sometimes fall asleep in the day which peps me up to keep going after. I sometime wake up in the night but often I go to bed, can hardly remember getting into bed and don't remember anything about the night. Morning comes round before I know it.

I once read an article about a guy who wondered if he could decrease his body's need for sleep by sneaking up on it, lessening bedtime by micro amounts over a long period of time. Didn't work. He eventually hit his individual wall and started downhill!

Make self well healthy; exercise, eating balance food nd drinks, go basics: deep breathing am noon pm, morning sun walk, 8 glasses water, vegs fruits. Omega 3.

Nope 👎🏻- a glass of wine 🍷 keeps me asleep all night - also had Mountain Dew & coffee before sleep and had no problem sleeping all night. Thanks 😊 I’ll see myself out. I am able to sleep anytime -

People lose sleep once they start a family , but it gets better when the children get older . It’s sugar and low vitamins , like V D , magnesium.

Pienso que es todo lo contrario. Es más difícil dormir de mayor. Veo un gran cambio en mi patrón de sueños de hace dos años atraz. Mucho insomnio y… Largas noches….los tés de manzanilla, comer plátano con miel, leche tibia, te de valeriana etc etc ya no hacen ningún efecto!

I beilved the myth that we needed less sleep as we got older... Even as I observed my mother sleeping from 8 to 4 and trying everything to stay awake later. And now I am the same... But it works...

Listening to this it seems to me that schools should be starting around noon. And work for people who are about to retire should start at 6am... Life would be perfect then! The rest of us should start work at around 9 -10 am... lol...

You can only sleep peacefully if eating Healthy & Exercising both sides of a God given brain (without a Label on your head or a Shot in the Arm to be Led (in exchange for the GOD Given Brain at Birth). Especially when pointing at your Yourself - Represents the Mirror on the Wall, for the Wizard called humpity dumpitys Who Are expediting the Great Falls When you can’t Change Yourself, you Can’t sleep with Others - as the Golden Rule is Not Hidden ... Haven't slept 8 straight hours in 30 years. 2 hours I'm up, wake at 3 am, go back 8 or 9 nap till lunch. Valium, then Xanax, cured that till opioid crisis, won't prescribe anything now, buy on street rarely. Weed, gummies, weird ass dreams but stoned I don't mind

I'm a 25 year old male, and I never get enough sleep. Stems partly from the fact that I had a phobia of sleep when I was younger, and I still find the whole concept a little unsettling. I sometimes go three or four days with only a maximum of two hours sleep per night. After several days with barely any sleep I can feel a definite effect on my cognitive and physical functioning. Having said that, I'm fairly adept at fighting through it and working/interacting successfully.

HOGWASH. the pineal gland calcifies, absorption of essential nutrients decreases, and the genes controlling circadian rhythm weaken their signaling. Of course there are sleep changes in healthy aging that contribute to sleep problems. And very few people are aware of the damaging changes in their routines that weaken their sleep or the effects of the medications they are taking to keep their body going strong.

I've always been an owl! It has been awful trying to get up early for work or school. When my classes in my senior year in college were in the afternoon, I slept from 4 AM to noon. I've always had coffee since I was 5 - my Swedish family drank it a great deal, I only drank much more when I was an adult, although I do remember drinking coffee quite a bit in early college. I thought I had no problem but it has been helpful to sleep longer now that I am retired. I walk a great deal every day, so I get to sleep quite easily, it is rare to not get to sleep easily, usually in combination with napping or sleeping late (my naps are too long -I'll try to keep it to 30 minutes).

Exercise Outside before 2pm, have a hot bath, make everyone go to bed, turn off the phone, use ear plugs if there is noise outside, no devices in the bedroom, take melatonin, blackout curtains.
