Getting Our Chicken to Regurgitate - Managing Sour Crop in Our Copper Maran Hen

One of our cooper maran hens has a bad case of sour crop - a fungal imbalance in the crop - which restricts her ability to process grain. We have to compel her to regurgitate, feed her yogurt, and put apple cider vinegar in her water to help restore balance.

Not so sure that letting the other chickens consume what the sick one regurgitated is a good idea since the sour crop may be caused by bad bacteria that could infect any chicken that ate what was regurgitated. Just a thought you might consider doing that outside of the chicken yard just in case it could be spread to the others chickens

Yeast is infectious and you allowed the other chickens to eat the infected crop fluid that came out...that could possibly be your problem.

People are subscribing. That normally doesn't happen. I thought I better look into it and found out a barfing chicken was to blame. +The Grass-fed Homestead - Your chicken fared much better than ours did with sour crop. We caught it too late in the game and couldn't get the crop to loosen up enough before the chicken died. Nice job guys. And you're still not off the hook for letting Ashley pick out all your chickens.

I'm so upset. We had a favorite hen with this issue, did the massage, and she aspirated and died. I've now found out this should only be done as a last resort and for no more than a few seconds. There should really be more of a warning with this. I can't get over the fact that I did this to her, and she probably would've been fine with other measures. I'm heartbroken.

I know how it feels to be in that situation. It was done out of desperation trying to save her, but her condition was already too far gone. From one day to the next they can stop eating, drinking or moving about and be so tired all they do is keep closing their eyes. So, trying to empty a full crop is dangerous for a chicken in an advanced stage of sour crop. I have treated the same chicken before in the early stages with water fasting then yogurt and then scrambled eggs.she was up and about in a few days. It’s possible that it never went away, it just got better for a while. I’ve heard that garlic water is suppose to help kill off the yeast bacteria in early stages but I hope I never have to find out.

I have not posted here since I mentioned that I was considering cancelling my poultry order. I did not cancel it, although I was very sick with Neuro Cutaneous Syndrome (aka "Morgellons") my daughter raised the 27 chickens, 8 ducks and one Tufted Roman goose. I'm feeling somewhat better (just found out about a dr in AZ who specializes in this disease, so I'm hopeful that I'll recover using his protocol. Regarding our flock. We've had some bad luck (and lots of fun, too!). Our goose turned out to be aggressive to the ducks and chickens. He killed 2 ducks and started attacking the chickens. I processed him. That was a sad and difficult task. Two days ago we lost a chicken to unknown cause. When I watched this video about your recent experience with sour crop, I immediately knew what had happened to our bird. Sorry for your troubles... but watching your video helps me understand what I can do to avoid future losses. It's wonderful to be growing more of our own food, yet there are days when farming reminds me of how fragile life is... and yet how amazingly fun and robust at the same time... focusing on the beauty... doing all I can to not beat myself up for not being perfect... Thanks for the video guys!

Mine that have sour crop, which is today, just sits and I can walk up to her and pick her up. Every few hours I feed her some yogurt and give her a drink of water. I had 2 die, that I thought were egg bound so now first I look for sour crop. One of my reds that died layed the biggest egg. So big that I couldn't shut the lid on a cardboard carton, so I had to buy Styrofoam egg cartons. I sure miss her. I lost a black sex-link, a RIR, and an easter-egger

I have a red leghorn that has developed a pendulum crop. I have been massaging her crop every two hours or so. It was at first fairly firm, but now three days later, it feels like a handful of water balloon. I have aggressively massaged her crop, but I can’t get her to vomit. She’s very active, and continues to lay eggs. Historically, I have provided my girls with apple cider vinegar three times weekly in their drinking water. With this development, I have switched to daily additives of probiotics and Rooster Booster Vitamins & Electrolytes with Lactobacillus. What am I doing wrong? If only she would vomit.

Is it just your Marans having problems with sour crop? I've never had the problem and I've been raising chickens for 50 years. I do remember my grandma dealing with it when her hens got into the wheat field before the cows. She fed them fermented grains with ACV and ground up cloves for a week or two. My worst problem was frostbite. I had arctic air come down and linger for about 2 weeks. I had combs & wattles frostbit. I stuck my heat lamps in the coop for extra warmth and my roosters crowded out the hens to be directly under the lamps and reached way and fried their combs! Then I lost power for 10 days and some hens who chose to stay away from the group froze to the perch and died overnight. I lofted straw about 3 ft deep for the chickens and goats to bury themselves in. Strangely, my turkeys treed themselves and did fine!

Maybe the Marans aren't suited to your area. I would definitely not keep chicks from them. If your other Marans are doing fine, go off them because as a homesteader, you don't want to waste your time constantly doctoring animals. If they can't handle your area, move on and get some that can! :D

Never have seen how to deal with sour crop, good to know if I ever have a chicken that comes down with it. On the same note, being with that we are in the same region, I’m wondering if your chickens have enough access to grit-like pebbles, either in the dirt already, or if you supplement. We have to supplement where we are, because our dirt is too silty. The grit helps grind long grass/forage/feed down, lessening the chance of compaction which leads to sour crop.

Get a one quart baggie and fill it a 4th full of water and add 3 nails to it then hang it in the middle of your chicken coop. 3 days later it should still be hanging there. If it falls throw it all out and repeat the prosess with new baggie, water and nails and hang it. By the 4th day it should still be hanging there. What does this do you may ask... My cockerel had a sour crop and even though I read not to make him throw up, I've seen too many videos like this making chickens throw up that it stuck to my head and I kept thinking I had to make him throw up. I really wish I hadn't because he took a dive for the worst after he threw up and he can't keep anything down now, not even water. He probably would have been fine if I fed him a treatment for it instead of regurgitating him. These kinds of videos should be taken down. So much misinformation. 😡

It worked fine for me. Just because it didn't work for you doesn't mean it is wrong
