Treating & Preventing Sour Crop In Chickens and Other Poultry 

I wish I'd found your video 2 days ago! I knew she had a problem, her crop was quite large. I caught her to feel it, and liquid came from her beak, so I turned her upside down and more spewed out. Now I know the gurgling was expected. I never thought I'd "vomit a chicken"! DId it several times, a good amount of greyish liquid came up, and a few sunflower seeds, and perhaps some bits of straw. She doesn't like to be held, but once we started, either she was exhausted or realized it was helpful. Did the same yesterday, withheld food but she drank a lot and needed the same treatment. I put her in a large pet carrier and kept her in the basement for several hours, quiet and cool, then to her perch for the night with water in the area. It's just a small coop, 2 chickens. This is day three, her crop was soft and spongy, but still enlarged. Poop was minimal last night, more of a light yellowish mush with a few small dark pieces. Guess I'll see about a scrambled egg, she needs to eat! ACV in the water, removed all bedding material from the nest area, any other suggestions Dr. Farm Guys? 🙂

After seeing this, I've made notes of all your remedies. Thanks guys! This will save me from operating on them after two of them indegested long grass! This was years ago now, but you never know when it might happen again! Yep. I did operate and both recovered beautifully! There crops were compacted so I researched what was required on the internet. Sterilised everything & set it all up. Flipped my trusting chicken on her back (one on my lap. The other on a covered cushion on a table) & away I went. Fortunately, there are no veins in that area that I could hit and, yes, I did use numbing cream used for tattoos. I was so nervous about hurting her! I used sterilised dog hair from my dog for the internal stitches & uncoloured thread for the outside. A friend said I should've been a vet! 😅 They were both so good! I think they knew I was helping them. Anyway, it sounds like I should just be aware that they have some tomatoes every few days & ensure they're eating their grit frequently and maybe some of these remedies as a preventative. I'm looking forward to getting into chickens again. I miss them! Had to sell them due to having to go into hospital for a couple of ops. That was a few years ago now. Getting some Silver Laced & Blue White Crested Polish eggs in mid September! A couple of Dark Barred Plymouth Rock chicks & later, some Silkie eggs with a few different colours. I can only keep 5-6 hens here in South Australian suburbs so, only 2 of ea breed. Still, so excited! This time, if I need to have another op, I'll find other means of still keeping them. I'm lucky to have a 30yr old daughter who says she will help. She was kind enough to help out last time by looking after my 2x dogs and 2x cats! I have a chicken that had a horrble impacted crop, I was close to having my son put her out of her misery. I read a tip about a natural laxative with no stimulants might work, Well that's the only option I had left and went for it. I happened to have senakot and crushed a tab in yogurt morning and night. I was shocked after two days that half of the seed moved through her and the rest became very soft.I have a crop bra on her and she is doing fine. I'm treating another for sour pendulum crop, she isn't doing as well, yet....Lesson learned, no more corn cobs, that's the only thing they had different. I have de-wormer coming tomorrow, it's a natural herb formula and treating the whole flock just in case that might be an issue...thanks for your advice!

QUESTION: The suggested remedies frequently mention to add to the drinking water (with varying time limits). Can they all be mixed in the same drinking water (ACV, molasses, etc) as long as the time limits are monitored for each ingredient? Thanks for the helpful video. 👍🏻

Have a chicken that we adopted who seems to be going through sour crop. This information is helpful. I love that the remedies provided contained a lot of holistic methods! 💕 One prevention and remedy I had heard is Apple Cider Vinegar to help with crop pH?

This was awesome on how to deal with sour crop. I just found out my girl has sour crop. Feel like a bad chicken parent that this happened but now knowing more I'm going to make extra measures that this doesn't happen. But do have a question. What's the best stuff to put down in their coop. Like at type of bedding?

My pet chicken has been throwing up yellow/ brown stuff. She's barely sipping water. Her crop isn't puffy or hard at all. Is this still sour crop?

I had to make my girl vomit and did it successfully, however she still isn't really eating and also has vent gleet. I have been giving her epsom salt baths and trying to get her to eat egg with probiotics plus put acv in her water. Also anti fungal cream on the vent. What else can I do?

Will this be the same for chick's?
