Don't fall into the trap of being too macho. Taking punches in the head, hard punches, too often, is not good for you.

So true Fran. You only need to see the number of footballers who are being diagnosed with dementia, and that's from heading a ball and the occasional clash of heads. We went to my uncle's funeral last year, he had been suffering with dementia for years. During the eulogy it came out he was a bare knuckle fighter when he was younger. Probably not a coincidence and it came back to haunt him 40 years later! Great videos by the way Fran, really like your work!

Best boxing channel on yt imo. Very insightful not only on the technical aspects but also on the training and lifestyle knowledge. Brain trauma is not a joke, I believe head gear and bigger gloves do matter when it comes to minimizing it.

What's more important actually us gym culture where people don't try to take each others' head off to prove a point in every single sparring session. Headgear often has the opposite effect and invites people to go extra hard because they thing nothing can happen with the headgear even though it's not true and headgear mainly just protects from superficial damage like cuts vut not so much against brain damage.

Im paralysed from the back of my neck to the top of my forehead, after a pro fighter snuck his way into a beginner class. Fortunately it doesnt affect me that much, I can speak just fine and look normal. I get tired early tho

@Sinekyre14
@Sinekyre14 Год назад
@@tonypaella Yeah, true story. Edit: I was totally unprepared as we were gonna do close range sparring. The coach had us do soft hooks up close then suddenly out of malice I receive a 100% power uppercut and then a hook. I could hear a snap in my neck and didn't notice I was completely numb across my scalp and neck until it didn't get better after several days.

@@Sinekyre14 did the guy face any consequences? That's just evil.
@Sinekyre14
@Sinekyre14 Год назад
@@tonypaella No, I didn't discover that it was permanent until way later and didn't want to go through all the trouble of reporting people and so on. I was so dazed that I don't 100% remember who it was, and they'd just deny it at this point. I didnt faint, so no one else really noticed it. I have a pretty good idea of who it was, and the guy is a complete psychopath

@@Sinekyre14 Seems to me like the guy is just a psycho who enjoyed sneaking into beginner classes and took pleasure in beating those who weren't ready for it.

Hello ! I am 36 years old and I was an amateur boxer... I have been so in my teens... nowadays I train and sparr too but every time I sparr I have a headache for at least on day after even if I wear head gear... I did a scan and there is nothing wring with my brain... but the pain still is there is this normal ? Should this happen or is it because of my age that I am not a teenager or in 20's anymore ? We do medium sparring... sometimes hard but that dosen't happen often... but there is pain still for 1 day after every session...

come on man think of your long term health , stop putting yourself in this situation.
@surrealistidealist

No one ever recovers as well as they did as a teenager. You can get physically bigger and stronger in your 20's and 30's, but your opponents and sparring partners will probably also be bigger, too. Protecting the head has to be the top priority.

just stop it bro. i also stopped sparring for the same reasons. its not worth it. if you were a superstar boxer that made millions you could sacrifice some of your health. but doing it for fun? not worth it.

@@NoName-eq5oy I think you're right... did you also have headaches after sparring ? Did the pain last about a day ?
@NoName-eq5oy
@NoName-eq5oy Год назад
@@alinvid6098 yes, basically after every sparring. especially when i would get punched so hard that i saw flashlights. the headaches usually came the day after and sometimes would last 3-4 days.

If your getting hit too much or put in rough sparring all the time, your boxing gym and coach is garbage. "Boxing is to hit and not get hit" -- Guillermo "El Chakal'" Rigondeaux

Today I'm glad that a ACL injury stopped me from boxing years ago. I really wanted to learn the craft and get better at it. But the amount of punches I would have taken in order to get better, is just not worth it. We get the most valuable thing for free when we get born - a healthy brain. Why put it on the line?

Just how can you preserve brain health in a sport whose objective is to cause a brain injury? I quit when my awareness of CTE made me so paranoid of being punched in the head I became useless in sparring: I started freezing, shelling up, not letting my hands go, and taking body shots from bums who had no business in the ring with me. It’s an evil sport.
