The Pulsar Dual LFO, new as a Rack Extension in the Propellerhead Shop, is a flexible little powerhouse utility with tons of routing potential. Even though Pulsar is capable of some wild tricks, it also is one of the best places to start learning about modular synthesis and LFOs.
We put together this introductory look at how to use LFOs to spice up your existing sounds and how to get Pulsar making some sounds of its own.

(almost) *eight* years later (1 month short at the time of writing) this video is _still_ one of my all time favorites. A better intro (IMO) and... showing how small things can lead up to big results. These days I even use Pulsar with MIDI out to do the same as shown in the video, but in my case I like to control Absynth 5 or Serum. Reason was _WAY_ ahead of its time, it always has IMO.

I honestly think this is one of the best Props video's out there right now. It sounds good (though most do), its easy to follow AND recreate, and also has some humour in it though not over the top. My all time favourite at least.

you did it again. Here I was all happy with tracking in Ableton and then I watch this. The tones are just sick groovy! I've learned more about sounds composition by playing with Reason's intuitive hardware metaphor user interface than I ever imagined was possible. I like the simplicity of Pulsar for this, um, reason. Thanks for the free upgrade to 6.5 for 6.0 owners and thanks for keeping these tuts coming

Man, these videos you guys do are always so well thought out and executed. What takes me 6 minutes to explain at a very basic level, you guys can explain in 60 seconds in a very clear an concise manner. I know you guys have resources and plenty of practice, but hopefully I can get my videos closer to this sort of clarity. Anyway, just wanted to comment and say "Bravo" on another great explanation and device!

I'm honestly happy to see that you guys haven't lost your touch... This is totally opposite to the stuff I criticized on "in that other video". Clear, to the point and the most important part: leaves you wanting more! Even though I'm quite happy with Reason 4 I think its awesome to see how the product is really maturing into one heck of a DAW!

Slight correction, it's a noob tutorial but far from a noob tool. Pulsar can do things that the other LFO's in Reason cant. James and Mattias will be showing you some of Pulsar's advanced tricks soon.

Exceptionally professional video, Thanks! I haven't enjoyed a Prop's video this much since the marketing video for Reason Pianos. I also like the certificate idea.. Prop's should have a school. Reason is actually a little more complicated than some of the other DAW's and tools out there, glad this video actually made mention of this instead of the old "Reason is for musicians..". Well yes it is, but really only gear heads get the most joy from tweaking. Another plug for a VST/AU RE:)

FM uses sine waves, if you want to achieve that the FM setting on subtractor can give you similiar tones, but what you describe is really just another way to achieve the kinda bass sound in this video.

Some of your best rack extensions are ones without presets like this! I do miss the Line 6 Amp presets though. I would always mess around with them. I hope to see you guys make some Softube amp Combinators in the same way. Maybe using Polar. That is crazy good on guitars.

lol yeah you can! I love doing that :P I'm simply supporting the fact that the Pulsar brings a nice new variety of modulation routing options and synth tones to the table! not just a rehashing of previous devices, otherwise Props wouldn't have made it!

Glad to know Pulsar, loved that tool but it is hard to find in Utilities... I just upgraded to 9.2 from 7.1.1 and it has been amazing where Reason came! I have been using your Virtual Studio not (DAW) since 2.5 version :) and EMT 140 reverb is just great ohhh yeah... you guys made my dreams come true what can I say it has been an amazing journey. You guys definetely playing for the top.I really dont get people who uses and loves their crash effective Pro Tools... Propellerheads any suggestion for the best effective multiband compressor from shop as RE? I know that there is you multiband compression combinator but I just wanted to know I have seen Flower Audio 4Dyne and Red Rock Sound Multiband Processor which one would be the best choice? I guess I should try each of them anyway.Thank you guys.I love Propellerheads you guys are awesome thanks for making our dreams come true

Because Pulsar can do much more than this... this isn't a display of all its power, it's a getting started tutorial for people new to LFOs. There'll be much more on Pulsar to come from James and Mattias that'll get into Pulsar's dual nature, uses for the lag/shuffle/phase knobs which aren't on thor, and routings that will show advanced users how Pulsar really sets itself apart.

None of the other LFOs have shuffle, phase, or lag...which aren't shown in depth in this tutorial since the're advanced. Also (again not in this tutorial) Pulsar's ability to interact its two LFOs is wholly unique to all else in Reason. The magic happens in the back of the rack with combining and mingling the two signals to do things otherwise impossible. But this is a "getting started" tutorial, not a promo so it's made for people who are new to LFOs, have Pulsar, and want to get going with it

It can be used as a mono synth, yups. It can also be used as an awesome AM device ;) Instead of using the CV try mixing the audio output of a regularly setup LFO device into your main audio :) Pulsar is way more extensive than its easy appearance may make you think.

Thanks for this tutorial. Last night I've tried to make the same tune to learn how to do that. I've found the rex loop, but it was missing the Kong to add some low kick. All is working well (Pulsar is great) but my 4 bars don't sound like yours. Maybe I haven't found the exact chords, maybe I have missed something. Could you share the "song" file ?

Been using Pulsar today. It's been an incredibly frustrating experience sadly. I tried to use Pulsar to trigger a drum instrument, and leverage Pulsar to create a drum roll. I also wanted the drum roll to sound a bit more realistic by having the first few hits at the beginning of each bar a bit accented. But meh. The "sync" settings didn't quite do it with 1/64 or 1/32 settings, the non-sync settings allow me to find a frequency that works better but then it's a nightmare to sync with LFO 2, there are hiccups with the sync, also the square wave shape LFO I think starts low then goes high ? Because in order to get the beat to start when I hit the key I had to use the inverted CVouts instead of the direct ones. Tried syncing using the envelope trigger, tried ticking the various sync LEDs to get a steady beat on time: no such luck. I think I'll just manually and painstaikingly write my drum roll in the sequencer and call it done. Couldn't get Pulsar to do it even with a lot of effort.
