This guy is the truth, I have zero criticisms and just appreciate how real he is. Clearly he's being himself and not trying to impress anyone with fedora hats or vintage gear, he's just doing his thing and he's clearly comfortable with it. As a long time logic user, this definitely inspired me to open up reason again

Since 2003 when I first started using Reason I notice that is was a unique an awesome software. Now in 2012 in my opinion Reason is the most important and effective music production software. I'm a certified ProTools operator for music and post and I still prefer Reason over any other DAW to produce music. Propellerhead is a company that really cares about music and musicians!

The Line 6 board outputs MIDI controller data just like a controller keyboard. It has a control panel setting where you can choose what MIDI CC number each button outputs. He's got it set up so that the numbers used by the Combinator buttons are mapped to the pedals.

@propellerhead could you pretty please do more guitar stuff with specific instructions for foot controllers and midi mapping so guitar work can get creative, be great to use multiple effects within one take and control them.. I am wondering though, the effects are they what he was building into the combinators? Theoretically should any controller for guitar do the same thing through any interface with just a stereo out?, but it is still audio, so the audio has the effects applied in real time in reason and then we hear it but the controls are midi triggered is this correct? quite a few of the tutorials state they will cover more advanced functions in later videos. ?? Will lvoe you more than I already do if I get a response or see another video, pretty please thanks, been using Reason for a decade now.

This one sounds kinda complicated to handle via youtube comments (which have limited length). Are you using a USB microphone or something? Or are you plugging a microphone into a mixer and a mixer into Balance, and Balance into the computer?

I use Reason to produce and use a midi keyboard to do everything within the program but that really made me want to learn guitar to interface it with Reason.

Thanks for the speedy reply! It dawned on me that I already have a midi foot controller (for the Fender Cyber Twin amp) gathering dust and I'm going to experiment to see if I can set it up in a similar way ;)

Good Question! I think we're all noobs and always learning. The big difference is that a mixer would take all all 8 inputs and sum them together into a master output - "mixing" them together. Balance doesn't "mix" all 8 inputs, but rather lets you choose which two are going into the DAW. Many people have 2-input interfaces with only 2 jacks and then a mixer also to handle their gear. We realized that we could do the same with just Balance, making the mixer unnecessary and Balance easier to use.

Not sure if I understand you. Reason users get a free upgrade to Reason 6 if they buy Balance. And you're right when you describe the pricing of Balance and Reason Essentials. It comes with Balance because we make both and can package them together for a nice combo but the cost of Balance is based on the premium preamps, premium converters, and award winning design features...getting rid of Essentials from the box doesn't drop the price, it just bums out people who want software to get started.

Cool video, but I'd really love to see more about how to set up that Line 6 (?) footswitch board or whatever it's called. Curious to know if Reason works with different devices of that type as well.

Very nice video! The double neck touch guitar in the beginning has a very nice design and I love the "patch wood" design on the other electric! For new people like me watching this video the Propeller Balance is discontinued! You might be able to find it somewhere if you look hard. Most audio interfaces should work just as well. Thank you for the tips on recording electric guitar into Reason! If you get a chance check out "The Biaxe" video on my youtube page. My friend Chuck was one of the first to design and play a double neck touch guitar. We recorded the Biaxe vid in 1985. Let me know what you think!

It is fully possible to get great guitar tones inside Reason of course. If you listen to the guitar in my video, Ergo Bass Spiral Galaxy, you can hear that the Line6 marshall simulation with wah, scream, and softube distortion sounds quite good. The guitar is a Squier Classic Vibe 50's strat, which has exceptional tone. I'm just saying it's not up to real amp dynamics or Amplitube.

I have two questions: 1) Can I use Line 6 Floor Pod Plus pedals to work together with balance? (because I don't have a Pod HD); 2) Can I record different lines of guitar with no pedal effects on balance, and put the effects after using Reason ? (excuse my language it's because I'm brasilian).

Question about the pedal board setup. I have some tracks I'd like to play live. I have an HD500 mind you so the MIDI setup is manual. Is there any way to Press a footswitch to set the beginning of a loop, press it again to set the end and have it loop until I press a button to stop it?

Hey, ive got a somewhat of a problem. i dont have a "studio" at home were i can record acustic guitarrs from a microphone, so when i go, i get this noise in the recordings. i would like to reduce this noise as much as possible to get a clean recording. is there any functions in reason for that? or would you just recommend me to get a pluggable guitarr?

Well I understand that pre-amps and even building something of the balance can become such a hassle thus premium price for a premium product. I use reason for the sounds and Ableton for the interface. I am sure there are mixers out there for 50$ more or less. Though you also need a mic, and a pre amp. Balance is nice, because you don't need an audio interface and a mixer simply; because it's built inside of balance. Simply put premium price = premium product.

Maybe about time to make an updated version of a "Reason for Guitarists", as the showcase here is about the Balance interface. Why? 1. Balance is not longer available for purchase 2. Balance is no longer accepted as an offline license container for Reason > version 9 3. It's about 10 years old and shows an ancient version of Reason, almost unrecognizable from Reason 11.

I hope to get it one day as well but i'm put off by the fact that Propellerhead are not giving existing Reason 5/6 or Record 1/1.5 users a discount on the rrp of £299/$399. If you're an existing Reason user then the Essentials software, this comes "free" with the Balance interface but yet to buy it on its own is around £99/$149, will probably stay in the box. This to me is a slap in the face for the Propellerheads massive loyal user base

Went way too fast for me. I learn 1 thing at a time only. I want to love Reason. Now it's like walking through tar. My old Sequencer in my 01w/FD, A trusty set of Mics, and ADAT was fast (I did 8 albums that way). I sure wish I could figure out how to use Reason. Toughest things are 1. Sampling 2. Editing audio such as crossfade 3. Inability to set markers and flags 4.And the drum (But I may be getting that. It's just so different from ACID). I need a tech guy to download

Unfortunately so true. I absolutely LOVE Reason, but the Reason sound designs for guitar, including Line6, are a real weak spot. You either have to record live guitar through a Fender amp or work out how to get Amplitube into Reason. You have to remember that the evolution of Reason is through the lives of synthesizer gurus. They have a ways to go with guitars.
