Amazing stuff! I am totally an advocate for PECS, I've seen first hand non-vocal individuals learn to initiate interactions, scan the environment, discriminate between icons, and build sentences. Such an awesome method. I never use it to replace vocal behavior, rather, I use it to supplement vocalizations. A few times, I have seen Phase III and using differential reinforcement for using vocalizations objectively bring out the learner's vocalizations. Thanks for such an awesome tool to teach functional communication!

The use of Velcro should be the other way round - hard/hook Velcro on the symbols, soft/loop Velcro on the folder. This way you can stick your symbols on to a range of surfaces. Our school uses carpeted noticeboards on the walls, as well free standing carpet boards for our daily schedules, and they are covered in picture symbols for easy access around the room. If we used your approach we'd be applying a lot of hook Velcro around our classrooms!

actually Pyramid Consulants "prefer" hard on book and soft on cards, so that the books and activity board can them be cleaned off (with toothbrush) versus having to replace velcro when dirty....also each learner should have their own "words" the classroom materials should be seperate from each individuals communication book.

@@jmlporter Exactly, and the fact that the hard velco gets stuff to stuff easily so when it's on the cards you have to constantly separate them from each other and other things like clothing!!!!

Making the PECS board is easy. teaching how to use the PECS board is a little challenging.

Hi I am Teacher Assistant in Canada and it has been a long time since I've used the PECS system ( I was working with students in an academic learning centre ) I am in Grade 1 with a child who is non verbal. I can't remember the set up of the books etc can you help ? Thank you Sylvia

Thank you for inquiring about PECS. When you set up the communication binder, you want at least 2 insert pages with a hook and loop fastener such as Velcro® so you can place the students pictures in the binder. The pictures inside the book should be images of the learners favorite items, activities, places and or people that they actively reach for. As learners progress and build their vocabulary, you can add extra sets of insert pages, universal no symbols or pages, a strap for carrying it or hanging it up. The communication book that Pyramid sells consists of: - 1 binder, 2 insert pages, 1 sentence strip, and Velcro for affixing to the binder and insert pages. If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out to our team canada@pecs.com.

I agree! I just started making some cards on my own. All you need is a computer, printer, and a laminator. I imagine what he's advertising is a pretty penny.

I could not agree more with this comment. I'm in the UK and was advised to watch this by my sons speech and language therapist. All I know now is how to spend money. I'd rather know how to help my 2 year old son and am extremely disappointed that we're still hiding this kind of information behind a pay wall in 2021. "We want to help kids... but only if you line our pockets". Kinda disgusting if I'm honest. This sort of thing should be freely available to everyone in a caring, modern world. Not a useful video at all, just shameful marketing aimed at concerned parents who do not need any more worries in their lives. Needless to say, I wouldn't buy these products on pure principle and will just make my own. I'll just have to figure out the lessons on my own which isn't helpful in the slightest.

pictures are fine but does this also teach them to read and write. reading and writing is very important. I haven't given up hope on my son yet. I did notice the pics also have the words. will this also teach reading and writing?
@pecsglobal
@pecsglobal 6 лет назад
Hello Tracy, Your question is a very good one! Of course, reading and writing are important skills and can lead to many other functional skills being mastered. Having the words written on the PECS symbols sometimes does result in certain people picking up these words as sight vocabulary. The actual reason we put the words on the symbols is so the parents and teachers are using the same language to describe the object each time. Some PECS users do end up being so good at reading they can exchange words printed on cards. We always want to make sure we are keeping literacy instruction and communication separate though in terms of making sure we don’t sacrifice efficient communication for the sake of using printed words. I hope that helps.

One step at a time :)
@haleyhaley1458
@haleyhaley1458 5 лет назад
Tracy Suiter it’s one step at a time, Tracy. If your son can’t communicate by speaking and is using a pecs book to do so, he needs to first master that skill before going on to something much more challenging like reading and writing. You also have to keep in mind that no child with autism is the same as any other child with autism, so their processing levels are going to vary. This won’t teach them to read and write as much as it will help them communicate their needs and wants, which is very important. If they can’t even tell you that they need the bathroom or want some water, then what’s the point of them learning to read and write? Please be patient with your son.
