Great video. Someone told me I had to winterize mine soon, and I have zero experience with swamp coolers. This was very helpful.

usually there is also a plate that you put either between the vent and the cool or just underneath the cooler to keep all all the hot air from escaping during the winter. also a good tip if you are living in an area where the water may freeze during the winter, opening up the water pipe and drain all the water from it because when the water freezes inside the pipe it will expand and damage your pipe.

Where is this located? I have the plate but do not see where it goes

Good video however, you missed the part about disconnecting and/or draining the water supply line, which will freeze if it has water in it.

I see there are 2 types for side discharge & downdraft "slide-in" dampers; between the blower assembly & roof jack adaptor and/or to the air vent duct that has a slide-in opening...plus there are air duct covers to fit over it as well. So, that is what I'm needing to find; the installer did not give us the manufacturer's damper that came w/ it only the canvas cover? I found the PMI manual as it mentions about the slide-in damper...I need to find a 20"...looks easier to install in the air vent.

Should the supply line be drained at the bottom?

yes is absolutely should be drained. if you don't drain the supply line it will break when it freezes.

My problem is, I was up on the roof the other day, the heater was on, and i realized that my swamp cooler was all puffy and full of air. The air was able to escape out the bottom of my swamp cooler cover. nice and warm. but im worried im loosing heat. My gas bill is like $200 and the heater stays on for a long time to heat up the house. Almost as soon as it turns off, it turns back on again.

Also! My previous house had a plank to put so the heat wont escape out the swamp cooler. But this house, my swamp cooler is connected to ducts that go up into the attic and the heater vents are the same pathway as the cooler vent in the summer. Any suggestions?

+James Last check your attic where your cooler comes in you may have a vent you can block with a piece of insulation and a board.. just a small town handyman A Local Source, LLC

Dude, I looked up a video on how to winterize a swamp cooler. Not a video on how to climb a ladder. If people need help on how to properly climb a ladder, we have problems as a species. Here's all the instruction one should need on how to climb a ladder: "Don't be a complete idiot about it."

He goes on about ladder safety while completely ignoring the part about draining the line, which is what is going to cost you next summer when the line breaks and it leaks all over your house.

LOL it was my first thought as well. Maybe a few minutes on the various types of pliers?
