GH4 Low Light Test (4K Footage) 

Creative Ryan I agree with you Ryan. If one gets some fast glass this camera rocks. I even get great low light shots with the Lumix 12-35 and 35-100mm F 2.8. I'm an older fella so trained in 50-100 iso film. So when I shoot with a Gh4 at 800 iso and look at the clean images I think wow. If one only uses available light and night shoots. I recommend either the Voightlander F-0.95 primes. Or EF Canon F 1.2 with a Metabones Speedbooster. Should put you in the Canon 5D Mk 3 territory for low light capabilities. Plus you can shoot 4K, which the 5D Canon cannot.

Creative Ryan Hey there Creative Ryan! I am having trouble with my GH4 in low light. All the videos I see on youtube of low light test with the GH4 are so astounding, yet my shots look NOTHING like this. I am using the GH4 with a Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 Cine lens and my shots are blurry, overly saturated with red, and grainy. I just don't know what settings to use. I am new to photography/cinematography and all this ISO/Shutter Speed/Aperture stuff is blowing my mind. Please help!

TheyCallMeLevitius Ryan that's good you bought a Gh4 and Rok lens. A good choice and you mention you are new to it. Be patient Ryan it's like anything in life that you start new in. You cannot race in the grand prix on a learners permit. Basically join some camera clubs be around peole who love the same thing. Buying a Gh4 and lens kit that you have is a serious jump into. In camera clubs many will be more than happy to show you the ropes as with any new club. Some camera courses are great. You'll learn about all the things that's are fazed with. You will learn that camera and if you stick to it. You'll get to be good at it. Just like anything else.

I manually focused most of these shots but if you’re saying it just isn’t focusing at all, there may be an issue w/ the camera. I would reach out to the company.

@@CreativeRyan thank you for your response😁. I will try to reach them! I was told that the focus works only manually for this combination but unfortunately mine didn't work at all.

Use a 1.7 lens or lower and set ISO below 800. This video does not show noise because youtube compression hides it but trust me there is noise in the original file.

***** I have a T2i and GH4 and I can say that there is practically no difference between the two in low light - however - the GH4 has 2 saving graces. The first is that it can record at 4K and the second is that it can record at 100Mbit compared to the T2i which is limited to approx 43Mbps at 1080p. So, not only will your codec (H.264 unfortunately) handle higher ISO noise better, as noise is the enemy of clarity when you are encoding - but you also can do a high quality resize of the 4K image down to 1080p which will give you the equivalent of a 4:4:4 10-bit image in post. This added detail can help mitigate the appearance of noise in post. I also have pained over the a7s. It clearly handles noise far far better than either the T2i or GH4. There were also 2 deal breakers for me: 1. The rolling shutter on the a7s is ridiculously bad. 2. You can't record 4K internally, you have to get something like an Odyssey or the new Shogun (unsure if I'm correct in this, I haven't regoogled it just going from memory) which blows out your budget from $1.8k-ish to around $5k+ The other benefit of going the GH4, I reasoned, was I could easily interchange glass between my GH4 and T2i if I got a speedbooster. That thing from Metabones cost $600+ - I ended up getting several mft adapters off eBay. One was a a $99 speed booster with no aperture control. Another had aperture control but no focal reduction lens (around $30) and the third one was a straight through dumb adapter for about $10. I was unsure at the time what was good which was why I bought all of them. The entire spend is around $150 compared with the $600 metabones investment so I decided to experiment. The results were good and I've paired the GH4 and T2i with Rokinon / Samyang Cine lenses which have built in stepless aperture control and now I can use the glass on my old T2i and GH4 and with the myriad of adapters/speedboosters I can squeeze two effective focal lengths (1.65x and 2.0x) out of each prime... really happy with the setup. However for filming purposes I'd still try and push for as much light as possible. Good luck!

+Roy Sherfan gh4 is much cooler for the 4k internally and also its fine with low light as you can see above. Knowing how to adjust your settings in certain situations is key.

I'm curious about this, too. I'm looking at a variety of models -- including the GH4 and A7sii. But I think the best course of action right now is to wait for Photokina @ the end of Sept. Lots of rumors that the GH5 and a followup to the A7sii will both be announced. I think it's also possible that the new models will force Canon to cut the price of the C100 in order to stay competitive, as I don't think they're going to release a C100 MkIII any time soon.

I'd wait a few more months until Photokina comes around. Huge releases that weren't announced at NAB this year are sure to be revealed. If you want one right now, and have the money, A7S II all the way. The Sony's image is just way cleaner in low light, and you don't have to push your settings too hard to get that clean look. Not only that, but its digital zoom is mind-blowingly good, so you can use a wide angle and zoom in digitally without any loss of detail. Then of course there's the internal 4K (basically the only thing the GH4 had on the Sony), and internal 3-axis stabilization (5-axis if you have a stabilized lens). I'll probably rent equipment until Photokina arrives at the end of September, and if a Panasonic GH5 is announced, I'll get that. Otherwise I'll have to go GH4, because I'm broke. Haha!

Very seriously. We have watched to Yuri Palma Gh4 works ( some are also on youtube), and quite honestly if a filmmaker has the skill of that young guy...well, GH4 is more than enough for professional works!! Yuri said that the real low point of GH4 is the fps, he means, he would like to have 96fps in 4K , but for the rest he was able to work together with MiniUrsa and Red owners...and he was the best with his GH4 production...

It's not about the price or the equipment, if you can tell the story and allow people to see the world the way you do then anything you use can be amazing

I have mine set at -5 for both. It creates a flat image that's easy to grade.

Yea I played around with that. I also tested max pedestal at 0 and 15. I turned off I dynamic. Highlight shadow I tried standard and lower contrast. Luminance I put 0-255. My shots came out pretty clean.. But, not as clean as this video. Wondering where Im going wrong.

+Drew Burks What lens are you using? I know the GH4 does lack in low light, however with a speedbooster it makes a difference. Also post production really can make your shots look 100 times better. Some of the software Red Giant puts out works like magic.

Lol. Well that kind of defeats the purpose of a light test with a GH4 if you're using adapters and lenses not native to the camera. :p

Creative Ryan By "dropping" the F stop do you mean opening the lens more or decreasing the aperture. Language can be confusing when talking on these terms so I just wanted to clarify. I would think that adding glass would only reduce the aperture though, can't imagine how it would let MORE light in.

+nhapz moreno yep it does require one. the GH4 is a mft system, and not the canon ef. You can get a decent one on Amazon for 20 bucks.
