I didnt like this ending when I was young, but seeing it again when I was older hits much differently. The major merges as a new creation, with the wisdom of the puppet master and the character of the major, a child of male and female parents, different and complementary forms. She's confined to a mismatched shell, however she isnt restrained by a body....because the net is vast and infinite, and thats where she can truly exist, as information.
I disagree on two points. First the confinement into a mismatched shell is only transitionary, I imagine that the first thing she does after the credits roll is going to one of her hideouts and getting herself a matching replacement body she already has prepared for cases like this (as it happens in the manga). Second, she is still constrained to organic flesh as her organic brain still needs a body to live in. She has become a new entity after merging with the puppetmaster, but she is still a human full-body cyborg and she can not really exist as pure information. She might be able though to outsource huge parts of her consciousness/personality and become 2 temporarily separated entities (in case she has to), one that walks the earth like before and one that swims in the infinite and vast net, but to become wholesome these have to merge and become one again. This is kinda mirrored in an meta sense as the sequel movie is different to the sequel manga. In both however she seems to be able to inhabit more than one body and her true self/physical body is hidden somewhere else. In the manga as well as in the TV-series (if I remember correctly) she later becomes able to inhabit more than 2 bodies, a living (and breathing) entity that is spread over multiple bodies simultaneously. A true and full ascension into a fully digital entity is only hinted at as a possible final destination, but never actually realized in any of the GiTS media.
