Ghost pipes are so interesting and they have quite the history for medicinal uses. I mentioned in the video about adding a couple of poems about the ghost pipes - they are below! For more information see below:
- Ghost Pipes: (identification, distinguishing features, flowers, leaves, height, habitat & edible parts): www.ediblewildfood.com/indian...
’Tis whiter than an Indian Pipe (1879)
Emily Dickinson
'Tis whiter than an Indian Pipe -
'Tis dimmer than a Lace -
No stature has it, like a Fog
When you approach the place -
Not any voice imply it here -
Or intimate it there -
A spirit - how doth it accost -
What function hath the Air?
This limitless Hyperbole
Each one of us shall be -
'Tis Drama - if Hypothesis
It be not Tragedy -
Ghost-Flowers (approx. 1893)
By: Mary Potter Thacher Higginson
In shining groups, each stem a pearly ray,
Weird flecks of light within the shadowed wood,
They dwell aloof, a spotless sisterhood.
No Angelus, except the wild bird’s lay,
Awakes these forest nuns; yet night and day
Their heads are bent, as if in prayerful mood.
A touch will mar their snow, and tempests rude
Defile; but in the mist fresh blossoms stray
From spirit-gardens just beyond our ken.
Each year we seek their virgin haunts, to look
Upon new loveliness, and watch again
Their shy devotions near the singing brook;
Then, mingling in the dizzy stir of men,
Forget the vows made in the cloistered nook.

These can also be used for chronic vertigo. I happened to ask a friend who was visiting, and who happened to have ongoing vertigo (months), to sample some & tell me what he thought, not expecting any reaction other than a but of a feeling of relaxation. 20 minutes later he suddenly, and excitedly, said 'IT'S GONE!' I asked what he was talking about & he said he was referring to his vertigo. Very effective & very fast acting. I just strained a large batch I made, now doing a double extraction with the plant material, decocting the already tinctured plant using water. It stands to reason that since people are making tea with it, it obviously has both water AND alcohol soluble properties. Having experimented with it in an oil extraction, I can report that it does absolutely nothing to color the oil as it does with alcohol & water. No change whatsoever in hue. But that doesn't mean that some of its active constituents aren't oil soluble. I am using it topically at the moment as an anti-inflammatory & pain relieving liniment on a very old injury which requires some help. Another video mentioned you MUST process the plant in the field, on the spot. Absolutely not true. I have even frozen the plant for tincturing or decocting later. Truly an amazing plant. The forests are full of absolutely all the medicines we need during our lifetimes, despite the fact that we are told pharmaceuticals are superior.

I have only been able to find dried ghost pipe online. I have seen people online say, as you said above, that it has to be harvested fresh and tinctured immediately. I wonder what is “lost” in the drying process in their line of thinking that couldn’t be captured with dried specimens. I’m going to start my dried ghost pipe tincture in a few minutes in a small 2oz batch to see if they’re right, as I have a bottle I purchased online and have been using with great results.

@@EdibleWildFood-1 does anyone know what the action is that relieves pain? I have a feeling people aren't wanting to admit it gives you a buzz or it some how relieves inflammation. There aren't magic substances that give you relief from pain without doing something on a physiological level to stop the pain or make you forget about it.

I found one today, knew immediately what it was once I got close enough. They have not quite come up but, beginning to just unfurl from the ground. I found an article while trying to figure out how long they take to come up, how long that they last, and the timeframe they generally grow, it gave the specific date of June 8th. I was walking when trying to find the information, so I didn't pay enough attention to notice where the author lived. If you can get out there in the next few days, it might be worth taking a good look around, right about now! Of course, I also have no idea where you are, so might have the timing off. Right now before I got close enough, at this point, they looked like bugs, a nest of bug larvae or translucent caterpillar like but too close in the ground , like juicy squishy larvae, that Timon and Pumba would eat.

I have these in my property in the lower Catskills and have been harvesting and using for over 3 years. The beauty of this as a painkiller is there are absolutely no psychotropic effects. You simply forget you had pain and stop focusing on it. In terms of harvesting, always use small trimming scissors. The roots are barely connected sometimes. Definitely better then aspirin and better for your body

@@colleenhaniman9472 I used 90 proof Bacardi for mine. Ghost Pipe works better than opiates without the effects from the pills. No dry mouth, no problems with using the bathroom and no dulling of your senses or high feeling! At one point in my life I was taking an oxy 80mg tab every 4 hrs for pain relief. The CDC and the war on drugs put an end to that, leaving me to suffer every minute of the day! All I take now is tincture from this amazing plant! Get out into the woods and find yourself some. You won't regret it! The tincture turns purple and is ready to use in 4 to 6 week. I take about 3 or 4 drops every 4 or 5 hours. I have not slept so well in years! This little plant is the answer to many prayer requests sent out by those that suffer with chronic pain. The CDC and the doctors can all go pound sand! I can now see a light at the end of my tunnel, no thanks to Big Pharma! On the 1 to 10 pain scale I'm normally 8 1/2 to 9 and taking the tincture just melts the pain away down to about a 2! I've researched this quite a bit and some say to use 3 or 4 stems with flowers per pint of alcohol. I use at lest 10-12 per pint. Good luck!

Thank you for a thoughtful video. This is my first year I felt called to harvesting any, although it's grown here for 36 years. I'll be using it as a pain reliever when needed as all I can take is Tylenol. I guess you need to add a see your doctor disclaimer, but the only doctor I've ever had who supported use of plants vs. scripts is my dentist. He's an independent doctor and not tied to any group. Conventional doctors in my area don't have a clue about what can be used - they only want to give out pills and they all have side affects. I've been able to find herbal remedies for everything I need now except for pain and hope this will complete my personal apothecary. Plants are a blessing.

If my memory serves me well, they are related to the blueberry family. I made some for my father who suffers from degenerate back disease. I have found it in New York and it was really cool watching the tinture turn a deep purple. I look forward to making myself some as I have some of the same issues as my father. Great video. I used everclear. I cut just up from the baee of the stem and than cut it into smaller pieces. I heard of a guy who cut his finger off and his neighbor gave him 1 tablespoon, than anther, and the third finally took and calmed him down and deadened the pain considerably. It is on my bushcraft foraging to do list this year. Great video and informative. Thanks for taking the time to make it. How did the indian pipe work for you?

Your comment reminds me of a book I got years ago from a library book sale. I believe was about home remedies and stuff like that. On the cover was a comic style image of a doctor in a lab coat on a TV screen smoking a cigarette. Above the doctor was a bubble message that went something like "trust me I'm a doctor". I know doctors are good and they can help with lots of things but I rather go the natural way before I think about a doctor. I'm not going to a doctor unless I completely have to. It's like when my childhood friends I knew growing up would get a common cold during the winter months their parents would rush them to the ER and get tons of different medications. When I got a cold when I was a child I'd get a cup of hot mint tea, a handful of peppermint and/or cough drops, and sent off to school. Sometimes I might get a spoonful of cough syrup of the cough was rough enough. If I had a fever I would stay home for the day till the fever broke. My parents wouldn't take my sisters or me to the doctor unless we had a high fever that wasn't breaking and that was a rare thing because the natural common knowledge methods worked nearly 100% of the time. I've always done things the natural way. Only time you would see me in the medicine aisles of the store is when you know I'm feeling it and I need the extra aid. I mean in the past 5-10 years I might have bought 2 maybe 3 bottles of coughing syrup.
