A fun fact: Goldenrod was known as 'Liberty Tea' by the colonists because it was the tea that they drank while they were boycotting the British tea!

That’s right, ragweed is wind-pollinated therefore has really light, wind born pollen, whereas goldenrod is insect-pollinated so has heavier, sticky pollen. Goldenrod pollen would not blow around, therefore is decidedly not the allergy culprit.
@ren_theHEN

I’m also learning that ragweed is a nutritious powerhouse! The seed oil from ragweed has about 40% crude fat and 50% crude protein! It seems like the natives used to cultivate it before they stopped to do corn. I’m telling y’all, our rabbits LOVE the ragweed. It may be their favorite weed we’ve given them. It may be an allergen to some degree but we shouldn’t eradicate it! Ragweed could be a life saving plant to have around some day in the near future.

Would you share how you make pain relief salves with goldenrod?
@maryk8509
@maryk8509 Год назад
@@michellengo3352 sure! Well it starts with making an infusion with goldenrod and Olive oil (you can use other carrier oils). Then we put it in a double boiler with other oil infusions we make, like calendula and sage (depending on what specific benefits we are going for). We will also use turmeric, cayenne pepper, or ginger. We use more goldenrod than anything. You can also just use goldenrod! No need to do anything extra unless you want or need to. For one cup of oil we use 2 tbsp of beeswax, melt it all together and then pour into a container. There are endless possibilities. It really just depends on what you want and need. But I say if you can do it, then go for it! It is empowering and can help you and people around you. 😉❤

This is what is actually killing all the wildlife, all the invasives aren’t recognized by local wildlife so the don’t eat it, and it grows out of control. Cutting grass a couple times a year compacts the ground, and your grass is probably European grass. There’s was once many ground birds grouse/quail that roamed the USA, most are subsidized now. There was once 21 million acres of prairie in Illinois, they have a fraction of a percent.

Ragweed often grows where Goldenrod does, and blooms at the same time. So people think they are allergic to goldenrod, but that's not possible because the pollen is heavy and drops, while ragweed pollen is lighter and floats in the air. Ragweed is a white-ish flower and looks quite different, but is not as visible, especially from a distance.

Interesting plant. Goldenrod is one of my favorites and has been since I was a child. Being raised poor, I would use the thick stems to build structures for play buildings. In regards to its medicinal aspects, it appears to be similar to stinging nettle. I use stinging nettle tea for my pollen allergies. It literally gave me my life back. It too also helps with arthritic joint pain. I will try the goldenrod flower tea tomorrow morning in place of my stinging nettle tea. I'm excited to see what the flavor is! I was a bee keeper many years ago and enjoyed standing next to the hives as the bees brought in goldenrod nectar. There was a unique smell, almost like bleach, that would come from the hive as it evaporated the moisture from the nectar. I sometimes will throw some goldenrod into the chicken coop as a treat. However, they prefer the stinging nettle. Amazingly, it does not bother them. As an aside... I just came upon your channel today. What caught my attention is how much the younger of you two look exactly like a character in my largest book series. (I'm new to this channel so I don't know names yet.) The character is not introduced until the 2nd book, but she plays a very important part. This is not a plug for my book. I will not post the name here because I do not feel that it would be appropriate. If you are curious, simply send me a private message. I will understand if you don't, so don't feel obligated. I write my books for myself and have no expectation of making money from them. I am now curious to see what your other videos cover and will spend some time to see. I am sure that I will learn some interesting tips and trick along the way. All the best.

Have always loved goldenrod tea. Just like you, I love seeing it because my bees go full force after. It makes me laugh because the nectar/honey in the hive can have a formidable odor at times. I have heard people compare it to old gym clothes, but that doesn't quite fit for me. Anyway the honey itself is a dark golden treasure with a rich delicious taste. Glad to see you extoling the virtues of goldenrod.

I am astounded by the power of goldenrod. 5 drops of the tincture with some local honey is life changing for my seasonal allergies, just an incredible resource. Aside from St John's wort flower, I do stick to dried plant matter for infusion in oils, due to the water content. I also fill the jar absolutely to the top to leave no/minimal space for air. I find that minimizes the chances for spoilage.

I got a 50 gallon drum full of tops today that are pretty much completely developed with seeds. I live in Washington state Puyallup, Washington, and I only know a one small patch that I have access to. I’ve tried so hard to grow everything at my nursery I got something else today on my hunt I found myself a red currant tree, not a bush or a tree. I’ve never seen a red currant 25 foot tall 20 feet wide and I know it’s a red currant. I looked at it over and over and over again analyzing it is unheard of, I also acquired some pairs. I need some wild blackberries. I bought cookies from children that were selling them on the side of the road. I got two dozen eggs from a local chicken farmer then I got to go into his garden and talk to him about the plants that are growing inside his garden before he weeds them Letting him know what is what so he is not completely annihilating everything but then I taught him how to do it with just water. I invented the technique how to remove vegetation with water. I do not like the word weed unless you wanna start talking about smoking weed or something like that, it doesn’t have a purpose in my world as a form of a word to be used so easily it would be like saying some foul word because you can’t come up with the right pronunciation as soon as we can get that through peoples head vegetation removal, not weed removal then the first thing they won’t think of is a negative word Sometimes you have to remove vegetation so you could have other vegetation grow

I've enjoyed golden rod before. I like your use of the freeze dryer. The flowers I left to the bees. As I enjoyed seeing them with their pollen sacs full. At one point I tested the specific gravity of an abandoned ant mantle. My calculation led me to believe it was mostly magnesium oxide. I filled a 14 gallon container with lid about an inch deep with the abandoned ant mantle. Then filled the container with the golden rod shafts after removing the leaves when the bees were done. Added water and a lot of salt. For a salty sun tea. I utilized the solution for a while. I believe I may have made a 10% magnesium chloride solution which has benefits of it's own in the human body. Not to mention the benefits of the golden rod shafts. This tea was a real sustainer. Eventually I added too much salt. And I had to cut the tea one third with sprite. Into the next summer it turned rancid. Leaving me without for a few months. Although we are zoned for farming the local government cited us for having weeds instead of a lawn. So that was the end for the bees that enjoyed it so much. And the human health benefits. Definitely do not feel the same without it. Thanks for creating your video. Happy Holidays!

Maybe you could corral some into an edging and call it a flowerbed? Maybe even grow some other flowering medicinal plants in the same bed?

I have a couple of comments. First, every time I watch one of your videos where you talk about using the freeze dryer, it reminds me I need to look into freeze dryers. What make and model is the one you guys have again? 2nd comment. Letting it sit for 30 days in the oil is much better. You, of course already know this, but many people may not know that even after you cut a live plant, many of the metabolic processes continue on for a much longer. Than you might suspect. I always enjoy your videos as they are both interesting and informative always! Thanks!

There actually is another freeze dryer on the market now. We have a Harvest Right that we bought just before the new brand came out. If there had been a choice, I'm sure I would have gone with the Harvest Right anyway, because it has a proven track record, and there are so many resources on RU-vid and Facebook to help with any problems we encounter. But there is another one out there now.

This is such a great video, thank you! I have known goldenrod wasn't bad for a while and have always enjoyed watching the pollinators and birds on it, but now I am watering it along with the other plants here and trying to encourage it even more. Thanks so much for the valuable info, love your channel, just discovered it recently.
