Ghost Town Road Trip - Return to Walpack

Last year I made a trip up into the Delaware Water Gap to explore the abandoned ghost town of Walpack. Today I decided to return to the town and make some stops along the way. I first notice an abandoned lime kiln on the side of the road. Then I take a tour of historic Millbrook Village. Next I explore the abandoned Delaware View house. I finally reach the eerie deserted ghost town of Walpack for my second visit. I finish at the breathtaking Buttermilk falls.

It's wild to see such a rural area in the densest state in the US. I'm 23, lived in North Jersey all my life, and I never thought NJ could be so rural like this.

I love the area so much I ended up moving there 13 years ago! Left Bergen/Passaic county and never looked back! Best thing I ever did.

Thank very much. Sussex County NJ, my childhood years and the place I call home. Walpack Inn Restaurant is there in that deserted town. An old hunting Lodge. Had many a great dinners there watching the deer from the table. Use to dream about the former Lenape/ Muncie Indians hunting up there and living off the land surrounding the Kitattiney Ridge hiking the woods in 60s and 70s.

I saw a video several years ago in which some former residents were interviewed and it was kind of heartbreaking. These people loved their town. I agree, the Delaware Water Gap is incredibly beautiful and loaded with history. Thanks for taking us along!

The yellow air raid (House Siren) on the pole next to the garage I agree might have been a vol fire company at one time.

I visited the Delaware View House in the early 70s, it was open and there was a guy there making pianos. I visited there again in the early 80s when I began driving, and it was still open selling soda and snacks. The Post Office in Walpack was also open in the early 70s and it also sold soda and snacks. There was a road from the post office that went West at the intersection over the hill to the Van Campin Inn.

A number of years ago, the town's population shrunk down and merged into an adjacent incorporated municipality. No place in NJ is not part of an incorporated municipality. You should also check on the family run private bridge across the Delaware at Dingman's Ferry also in the park area.

The turtle had a tracking device, you should have picked him up and borrowed him for a little while brought him on a ride on a roller coaster and did a few things like that. The scientists would have been looking at the data wondering what the hell is this turtle doing.

The Delaware view house was leased to a man till about 15 or so years ago. The person used to have a small store and sold hot dogs. He got evicted because he put a bear shock pad for a nuscence bear and a little kid got shocked. Up till then the place looked pretty good. It was in the papers. Such a shame that they have let it go. The abandoned bridge has a great trout streem running under it.

I lived very close to that area for over 20 years. Have explored all over there a lot. Used to drop off in Millbrook and walk down Vancampens Brook to fly fish at least once a week in season. But I have never heard of Walpack referred to as a ghost town.

When I was a kid in my teens I went to a campground pond atop one of the mountains in the area,the pond "Sunfish pond",was supposed to be used in some way for the Tock's Island Dam Project.Unfortunately they did something to the water,and killed off all the fish,leaving a sterile pond,however the water was potable and fed by natural springs.

I appreciate what you filmed yet it leaves one with more questions than answers. A little background info would make your videos (both) so much more interesting. You explained the towns reason for closing but that is it. Your videos could be so much more. Thanks for sharing pics at least. Don't get me wrong, you seem like a nice guy.

Road Trip vlog heck yea i enjoyed it. Definitely no need for vandalizing well said. The stairs to nowhere. Glad they are preserving Walpack. Gotta preserve history. The view from buttermilk falls amazing. Thanks for taking us along.

I wonder if these houses are For Sale by people who would be interested in restoring them (as they probably are under Historic Preservation rules)? It would be SO cool to see a town like this come back to life and keeping it close to what it was in its hey day.

There used to be a long term lease program several years ago. But they don't seem to do it in the last several years. Some houses on the off track have fell down or have been knocked down. It is a shame.
