Suit up for classic comedy! Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) take a chance on going freelance, de-haunting houses in a new ghost removal service. As soon as they open their doors, their first order of business becomes saving beautiful cellist Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) and nerdy Louis Tully (Rick Moranis), who’ve inadvertently opened the gates of hell…right in their own apartment building!

More laughs in the first 10 minutes of this film than in the entirety of the 2016 travesty. I also love the way the musical score combines spooky and comical- perfect compliment to the screenplay.

So was Venkman’s “This Chick Is Toast!” line during the Gozer confrontation, the scripted line being “I’m gonna turn this guy into toast”. It’s thought to be the first use of “toast” as such a slang term.

I love how the movie starts out like a classic horror movie followed by the theme song and Venkman being Venkman changing the tone of the movie instantly.

It would've been great if the student who he was mistreating in the beginning there came back for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and not only got back at Peter for that, but also showed that he ended up having ESP.

After he freaked out about being tired of it, I would have instead continued until it would have done where it would have been all 80, but would have refused to receive shocks anymore so I would have unhooked myself from that thing, and then required that I see the cards of both me and her, and asked Peter if she really got any right or if he was lying, and also asked Peter if I got any right but where he was lying just to be a jerk towards me, and yeah, I would have kept the $5. I would have also required that both Peter, and the woman, receive one shock just so they would know how I felt when it happened to me. Would you have done the same?

@@Steveman27 I would for sure keep the money 😁 I think I would have seen trough Venkmans little scheme early on since it was pretty obvious he was just flirting with the girl. I’m not sure how I would have reacted but I think I would have done something similar to what he did in the movie just because I would be pretty pissed off.

I remember lines of people around the block for this movie. And when the ghost screamed - the audience screamed all together, and laughed all together as the guys ran out of the library. That was an incredible experience- even as a kid.

@@timfoote6919 From what I recall hearing, most of the script for Venkman was written with Bill in mind. So... hard to say for sure. All of that first trio were well-versed in improv, and were able to bounce things off each other (seemingly) seamlessly.

First scene 1:14 that introduces the paranormal - floating books between bookshelves! I saw this back at 1984 at our local cinema, that was so freaky! So simple but effective, no CGI whatsoever

I got to visit all these filming locations in New York except for the ones that were filmed in LA. A real great treat. Ghostbusters is one of the best 80’s films ever! Idc what anybody says Ghostbusters wouldn’t have been Ghostbusters without Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd & Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman as the brains behind it as well

I have Automatonophobia, which for me manifests as a fear of statues. I think seeing Ghostbusters as a kid was part of forming that. I never noticed it before but the lion statue and ominous music kind of foreshadows the beast statues and them coming to life.

You know what, I always wondered how they pulled off the effect of the books floating between the bookshelves. My first guess is by using invisible thread, where all the books are suspended from the top shelf and they just cut a gap through the lower shelves to let the wire and the books through.

Also gotta give props to Ernie Hudson he might have been lucky to get a part but he played it well and even nailed it in the second ghostbusters especially since he got to reunite with Bill and Danny in Afterlife and Frozen Empire.

In three successive attempts, the test-taker saw his future card and got electrocuted, then saw her card and got electrocuted, then got his card correct. I think Venkman's theory was correct.

01:49. Old guard librarian here. For the uninitiated, those card catalogs in the storage room are the "shelf list" ones. The cards are not ordered alphabetically, but according to the classification system; that catalog represents the existences of books in the shelves in the order they must have, and are used for inventory. That scene is not comical for a librarian, but truly horrifying.

For all the kids out there, this is what us old people refer to as a "movie". It shares similarities with modern visual media, but the biggest difference is this has something called "characters" and "good writing". Today, those have been replaced by CGI and slowed down piano renditions of old pop songs.

The reason why the basement level full of books that the librarian went down into looked so barren apart from her is because the New York Public Library doesn’t allow anyone other than employees into the main stacks: that reading room you see is one of the few places where the public is allowed to go, as the books you see on the walls there are all reference materials and every library naturally needs a reading room. But if you want to check something out you apparently have to stand there and wait while a librarian goes back through the stacks and finds it for you: they’re just that protective of the place. So Alice there was putting away books in a place where hardly anyone is allowed to go: that huge room is probably that empty on a regular basis. …I wonder if the librarians at the real life place get creeped out by that sometimes?

Oh, the basement level wasn’t filmed at the actual New York Public Library like the reading room and exterior were, in case that wasn’t clear. It was a combination of a film studio set or two and a room in the Los Angeles Public Library-one of the areas in it that was later destroyed by that big fire they had in the 80s, I think, but I could be wrong about that.

Why didn't the guy who played the student in this first movie who got mistreated by Peter with that shock experiment, return for Ghostbusters: Afterlife? It would have been cool if he would have returned where he would have proven to have ESP afterall, and even got back at Peter. I think him not returning for that was a wasted opportunity.
