I grew up in the seventies and watched Dr. Who on PBS locally every Saturday afternoon. Tom Baker is still my favorite Dr. Who time lord. I actually met David Tennant once at a Comic-con event I worked. He was very personable. I have a lanyard from the event, although no photo with him. It was still awesome.

Anyone else notice how the giant robot is never one consistent size? LOL. Sometimes it towers over buildings, sometimes, it's building size. Totally hilarious and classic!

I do lobe how competent and cool under pressure UNIT is, makes it actually engaging to watch a military/police in Dr Who actually do their jobs. Reminds me of UFO. The cliche is always to have ppl shooting like morons at an enemy and then die, just to show off how powerful something is

Quite an underrated story in my opinion. I actually thought it was quite brilliant how they cast Tom Baker into a stereotypical Jon Pertwee style story as a way to show off the contrast between his character and his predecessor's. It was a nice way to show the audience just what they can expect from the 4th Doctor and a nice way to warm people up for his more markedly different style which is shown here and developed in further stories.

Yeh it’s a nice way to ease viewers to a new doctor having similar surroundings like unit and a pertwee style story. Funny how tom leaves in a typically davison style story too

Fact... the whole story was shot on videotape (with no film) solely so they could superimpose the giant robot over the outdoor shots and it blend better. Shame he's a silver robot and all the green screen reflects off him :') still looks good.

In the 1970s the usual colour for a CSO backing cloth was blue. Sometimes yellow was used. Green backings for CSO are a relatively modern thing. That is the reason the UNIT berets are beige . Actual UN berets are blue but that would have made them vanish when CSO was used. Also a reason why green CSO backing cloths could not be used then as the UNIT uniforms were green.

I remember watching this story when it first aired in the UK. I must admit that I was initially dubious of Tom Baker. After the rather suave & authoritive Jon Pertwee, Baker's Doctor was a bit of a gregarious loony! Watching it now, the glacial pace of 'the robot's 'attack' is hilarious! Look out!! Even as a child of 6 y.o, I knew the 'special effects' were terrible but thats the tech you had to work with in those days. Before ILM we had to use the suspension of disbelief lol Dispite my early scepticism. by the end of the fourth episode Petwee was but a fond memory and I was totally won over, Tom Baker was, is & forever shall be the Doctor as far as I'm concerned. God bless you Tom!

The Robot was my oldest brothers favorite episode. My father even painted a portrait of him reading the book. It’s still hanging in there living room today.

Always had a soft spot for this story. Great costume! We don't get enough giant monsters really, they're always fun, even with dated effects. Interesting how the Skarasen and Krynoid just a season later look much better and believable though.

Me too. I played with those in the same way I would play with my Action Man or Six Million Dollar Man dolls. It didn't matter one iota that they were thin card, my imagination elevated all those Weetabix cards beyond their physical limitation! Loved the theatres on the backs too! Happy times.

In earlier scenes there is an incongruous person walking beside the robot as it makes "level changes" in walking. I believe this to be an industrial safety issue because the person in the Robot has very poor visibility. While it was odd to see a human walking beside a robot being subjected to machine gun fire, I applaud the UK entertainment industry for putting safety first. In one of the famous "Jeeves and Wooster" episodes, Bertie Wooster (played by Hugh Laurie) has to climb a vine-covered wall. He has a clearly visible climbing harness but acts the scene as though it wasn't there. Again, safety first.

LOL Bless you sir for caring about the supporting actors. If you watch some other clips from this location shoot it's clear the grass is damp, they're shooting on a sloping hillside and there's a few slides and slips for the actors, and it's doubly dodgy for the guy in the tin cans. In one studio scene he's not on his mark, and another actor comes dramatically bursting through some large doors and nearly knocks the robot over, poor feller was being used as door stop. No time or budget for retakes in those days, unless it was catastrophic, no one imagined the world would be scrutinising these episodes so many decades later.

It's curious how the problems apparent in this video are completely reversed on present-day WHO. The special effects are sleek and shiny, but now it's the _scripts_ that suck.
