Giant, scratch-built Douglas SBD Dauntless World War II RC Plane [Award Winners at Top Gun 2020] 

I just read the article in March 2021 issue in "Model Airplane" and I just HAD to find the footage. Its even better than I hoped!

So basically it was completely to scale

Nice scale prop size, sure many RC warriors would use a smaller one but the real full scale planes were never so overpowered like RC planes often are. A full size plane could get to higher RPM only at speed (or at lower pitch, with variable pitch props) , but RC folks are obsessed with RPM and static thrust at zero speed so when their planes actually pick up speed then the engines rev up like no real machines do. Maybe the spark plugs and ignition need some checks because the motor sounded like misfiring sometimes, but that's the only thing I would do to the plane. The pilot needs more stick time (or sim time) though ;-)

A few things are needed here - an engine tune-up, a smaller prop, more steering authority in the tail wheel, and a new cameraman.

Take of is obcional,, Landing is obligatory... And the best part.

that thing was heavy, slow and over proped that engine needs to rev higher or you wont have the power in a emergency

The plane Looked nice. Didn't get to see a close up. Motor sounded overly rich.

hmmm. at 1:50, the question is, was a Decision made, to DE-tune the SBD. cuz the take-off and the flying, look weak.

I thought this was incredibly scale-like and appropriate. This is how scale models should be set up! People just don't get it - they expect all models to scream around the sky like homesick mosquitoes at 600 mph scale speeds🙄. And yes, I flew Formula One and 1/2A racers in the late seventies/early eighties, so I know what speed feels like😉.

I think that engine has issues, sounds like a Moki but with a couple of cylinders down!
