Humanity doesn't win, nor the aliens. Both sides lost valuable manpower and equipment on pointless war. Humanity was devastated whilst the aliens had an entire invasion force thwarted. But humanity lost the least, humans reproduce a fuck-ton so replacing the lost population would take a few decades or a century. The aliens lost Tripods, had their tech captured were exposed to the dangers of Earth's microbial world. Humanity would kill a 2nd Invasion force in less time if the aliens take a long time to get to Earth. I'm overspeculating here but, you get the point.

@@alicorn3924 Imagine retrofitting heat-ray weapons and force shields to Abrams tanks. Maybe even pulling the Iowa class battleships out of mothballs and fitting them with such weapons.

This was a National Guard unit and the lack of air power made it more realistic ,because it would show that the US military is so overwhelmed in other parts of the country they can't send help to every unit.

Because they aren't stupid they're highly intelligent creatures, bacteria blindness aside, and you can't get close enough to their feet without getting zapped

@ciaranmcguinness8900 Being smart alone doesn't prevent them from being target of airstrikes, especially with their colossal walker design. Bombs like bunker-buster can flip a concrete fortification upside down. There's no need to hit the tripod with this type of munition. It just need to land right next to a tripod, the blast will totally destroy the tripod's stability.
