In this series, we're delving into video game oblivion.
Titles that have, at some point, fallen into obscurity.
Today, we're taking a look at Giants: Citizen Kabuto, one of the most funny and charming action games I've ever played.
Released in 2001 by Planet Moon Studios, it surprised me by how fresh, exciting and hilarious it still is after so many years.
You can get it DRM-free on GOG.com:

That's a good point. I agree, most of the games I love are from that era. Games like Max Payne, AvP 1&2, Blood, Giants etc. The only modern games that I've played that give me the same feeling I had back in the day are Dusk and Dying Light.
@monteanthony1022

@@Largentina. dying light was awesome, almost worth the dead island flop. I miss expansion packs. Tarkov with it's flaws has been giving me those feels, but the MCC hit me hard. The moment i got online and i could just hear the shit talking but the voices were older. I could smell my neighbors stale cigarettes when my buddy an i stayed up all night playing halo 2 legendary with the window open. fuck mang.

it was basically the first time that 3d engines & 3d cards both matured together enough to enable game devs to build their dream games! and there was no "industry" behind it really, most where small teams, building the game they wanted to play! great age to grow up in!

I loved this game, even though I never managed to finish it due to the difficulty. To this day, so many years later, whenever I'm hungry I still cry out "I... I can't think straight with these hungah-pains!" (internally or sometimes externally). The game is part of me. Edit: corrected typo

My father plays this game non stop since it was released, he knows every single map inside out, he knows every A.I. mechanic inside out, it's so funny to watch him play, I mean he knows literally where every enemy will be before they even get there, I asked him once how he doesn't get bored out because he is playing the same game over, over and over again, he just said I play games so I can relax my mind, and I guess a lot of people forgot that's the reason games were made for, for mind relaxing fun. Thank you Planet Moon Studios

I remember when this came out. The days of Omikron: The Nomad Soul (Glowy Bowie on Quantic Dreams debut title), Syberia, Outcast, Deus Ex... We were crossing a threshold, we just didn't know yet. :-) Other forgotten gems you might wanna delve into: Sacrifice (third person action summon 'em up) Dink Smallwood (simple visuals hiding an engaging isometric action rpg, also hilarious) Ground Control (though Massive Entertainment is still around as Ubisoft Sweden, and working on low-key titles such as, oh I dunno, The Division?) Evolva; The Thing (both from Computer Artworks, who unfortunately went the way of the Dodo) Food for thought!

Tip for a future review in this section: Giant's fluid movement system by jet-pack reminded me a lot of 'Outwars', a 3rd person shooter from 1998, by SingleTrac / Ziggurat Interactive. I got the the mermaid chick but can't ever remember getting to play as the Kabuto as I remember the game being really difficult for a kid of my age at the time. Such a great hidden gem! So much nostalgia. The good ol' days, when I had not a worry in the world...oh how I wish I could go back💔 Another hidden gem I remember was Shinobido 2: Way of the Ninja (PSP). Oh boy... one of my definite favourites ever since I got it by chance when I was a youngster. I concur with the fun/10 rating, simply because the game may not be the best looking (especially today), may not have the deepest inventory aspect (although it's still solid), and may not overwhelm with deep lore or hearbreaking story, it's still incredibly well put together and simply... well, fun. A must-play for anybody who can look past the aged graphics.

The controls were great, and even though by today's standard the environments were pretty empty, they are still beautiful! I often would stop just to enjoy the view, forgetting I'm playing a game. The third act, however, was where the game took a slight downturn.

Thank you for this series. I just flat out haven't heard of any of these games and I like to think my young self would´ve simply been blown the fuck away, but here I am, having that exact reaction. Maybe I´ll build a PC and finally discover these great games. Sigh, I had no idea at the time, my moment came with games like Silent Hill, MGS, and Abe's Oddysee on console. I did play this one PC game back in the day called Powerslide. It turned out to be an amazing and forward-thinking racing game with a cool setting. In fact, you kind of helped to dredge that memory up. So I did get to play that one! Cheers, thanks again.
