I've recently been able to get my hands on a 2022 Gibson J-45. "The Workhorse" is known for it's versatility and incredible tone. But do Gibson's new refresh of the J-45 measure up?

My J45 sat in the closet for a long time because the action was to high. Didn’t realize it could be adjusted, rookie mistake. After taking it to a guitar store and had it set up properly I now only play the Gibson. The Martin HD28 has been moved to the closet. I like the neck and shorter fretboard.

Great guitar. I really don’t see where all of these major changes you described at the beginning of your video. Yes, the case, pickup, and maybe the truss rod cover. I was hoping it was going to be different bracing or tonewoods or even PLEK’D. Again, great guitar…just not seeing the drama of the new price tag.

What I thought he was saying is Gibson Acoustics are back to being awesome guitars again.. No doubt Gibson went through a few yrs of putting out at times Mediocre or Hit or Miss acoustic guitars and gained a pretty negative reputation.. Seems like the newer J-45's being built have been So much better as far as Tone and Quality.. Just my opinion but it seems like once Gibson made some Employee changes at the Top (CEO etc..) Gibson Acoustics have very much improved and all around the guitar communities there's been tons of positive experiences and feedback about Gibson Acoustics again. 🤘

You're right. This guy's headline is misleading as is his whole video. This is not a "new" J45, just some minor changes or "refreshes" that you identified. He hurts his own credibility. I'm a lot less likely to click on his channel again, and this was my first time.

I have a 2020 j-45 standard I bought new. I also have a Martin hd-28 and d-35. I had to have both martins setup but not the Gibson. It played great off the rack. I went to buy a Martin d-18 and came home with the Gibson. The Gibson gets more playing time. The pickup sounds clacky. The lr baggs anthem would be a better choice. I have it in my d-35 and it's great.

Last week a friend lent me a 2004 J-45 so that I could compare it with the Epiphone Inspired By Gibson version that I have owned for a few months. This is from the Samick factory in Indonesia. The result was pretty much what you would expect. The Epi does everything well, it's a fine guitar, and the Gibson does it all better. They don't feel much different but the Gibson has more volume and especially more bass. The sound quality is smoother and fuller. Fantastic with plectrum, bare fingers and finger picks. No surprises there at all. I didn't compare the plugged-in sounds. I got a good deal on the Epi, £500 new. The Standard is around £2,500 right now. Now, I'm lucky, I could afford that without pain or sacrifice. The reason that I don't intend to buy one is that I have several 6-string acoustic guitars and they all serve different purposes. If I were starting from zero I might well buy the Gibson J-45 and just use that. As an all-rounder it's fantastic. It could easily replace all of my 6-stringers but some of them have sentimental value. Is it the best out there? For me, maybe. For someone else, maybe not. One day, I know, I'll be tempted. Thanks for the video.

There are sooo many guitar reviews and reviewers on RU-vid, it's gotten to be a bit boring and, as such, I rarely jump on anymore. As others have mentioned, there are "NO" significant changes to the "New J-45 Standard" and the guitar itself. I can't remember the last time Gibson used bone in lieu of "Tusq". Going with a black nut and black truss rod cover is hardly a change, and, while novel, a "Blackout" case is well behind the blackout trend, from trucks to timepieces, and it doesn't charge the guitar in the slightest. Fit and finish details are nothing new and are simply something Gibson has been working on across the board since its brush with bankruptcy and new, "with it" ownership in 2018. Others have already opined on some constructive criticism for you, so I'd seriously take much of what's been commented on and work harder if you want your reviews to get more hits. Happy New Year!

I agree that Gibson and the like are expensive, and if I had that sort of cash I might buy one. That said, I own a couple of cheaper guitars of which I wish today that I'd never bought. I wanted to get one of them fixed up, new frets and fingerboard sanded and a new nut and saddle, but this was going to cost up to nearly €500 on a 10year old guitar that I paid about €800 for new at that time, so I decided, I probably will have to fix it myself. Fret replacement is expensive and if they were made out stainless steel, I think they would still be alright today, this is were quality counts. As they say you get what you paid for.
@IRequireMedication
@IRequireMedication 7 месяцев назад
Honestly, I have never understood how anyone can say these guitars are expensive. Like everything in life, you get what you pay for, and in this case it is quality that will last well past one's lifetime. Over 30-40 year with a guitar such as this, the cost works out to like $100 a year. Think for a moment just how many things in your life you are spending much more than $100 per year on. I have never shied away from spending money on the very few things that give me any joy in this brutal world. I bet these same people purchase a coffee everyday on their way to work, well, that's a couple fcken Martin's and Gibson's, easily.
@wearsider

@@IRequireMedication I think you shouldn't put everyone in the same basket, because not everyone has that money to spend and have other important priorities, like a family and need that money at the end of the month, and may be struggling to make ends meet. I too believe in quility and believe most of what you say.I never bought coffee on the way to and from work, I don't smoke or drink alchohol. Not everyone has good paying jobs and not everyone wants to get into debt.

Reminds me of Martin's new 're-imagined ' series, which in general is spectacularly hyped up and over-rated, and I have tried almost every one of them. I really like the Gibson 45's and 50's and Hummingbirds. A couple years ago I bought a 1963 J-50 in almost mint condition. Wonderful tone. Sounded exactly like this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WMolTmlVMlw.html All original stuff. That year they used a synthetic plastic bridge. Anyway I think Gibson's have a sweetness, when you get a good one. that other manufacturers can't get and my all time favorite guitar was a 1941 Gibson that I bought in 1970, and sold like a moron. It's dizzying to imaging what its price would be today, to say nothing of its value in sound. The current price points are so astonishing they better be good, even though the current USD is toilet paper. When I got my first ES-335 it cost under $400. And the original retail price of a J-50 was $50., not the $5000.00 I paid. It's about value, not price. And value equates to tone and playability. With a worthless dollar your 45 could sell for a million in a few years but this is not about the czars of high finance. Congrats on a great guitar.

Otherwise it just comes across as a Gibson kool aid drinker who hasn't tried any other flavour than standard orange. Is it better than a Yamaha, Tak, Godin, Alvarez, Martin, Taylor, Alhambra, etc.etc.etc. in the same price range???
