My guess is that they thought banishing would negate the effect somehow. Of course, even then banishing Phoenix would be better, but it's an Eldlich player. Nothing there

@DarkwingDuc i had emblem in hand and it also gives a 500 atk boost. Literally I only did the discard + banish just to make sure they could only attack with the token.
