Gift and Mystery: The Spirit of Adoption | Holy Trinity Sunday (Fr. Mike's Homily)

God wants to spend time with you.
The Mystery of the Holy Trinity is the Mystery of God's identity. The tri-Personal God is more than an abstract concept, yet the Trinity can often remain in our minds as a vague "idea". And yet, in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, God has claimed us, brought us into a new relationship with Him, and made us a new creation.

As a father of four, I am only beginning to understand how God loves me and I can see that you, Father Mike, already have a much better understanding of this mystery. Only the Holy Spirit can reveal something like this. In my case, God had to give me four children so I could begin to grasp how truly and deeply He loves me.

The funny thing about Christianity is that the more it "doesn’t make sense," the more it makes sense. Even science doesn’t disprove our faith. In my experience, it only proves the legitimacy more. I always tell my atheist friends that even if I didn’t grow up Catholic, I would’ve become Catholic eventually. It’s just so clear to me how everything in our faith fits with our lives. Catholic teaching feels not just wise, but intelligent. Earlier this week I was doing some heavy soul searching in terms of what I want to do (I just graduated college). And I came to the question, "what is my why?" I truly believe my why are the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit and the Theological Virtues. Wisdom Knowledge Understanding Reverence Wonder & Awe Fortitude Right Judgement Faith Hope And greatest of all… Love. These are the reasons I do everything I do.

Hearing you refer to God as Dad has just smacked me in the face: God is Dad! Oh my goodness. Thank you ❤❤❤

I could never figure out how people could call Eternal Father, Papa. I thought it was discrediting to God. I never realized I was the one discrediting Him, keeping him at arms length. I wasn't feeling well physically, and i realized it was time to listen to some of Fr. Mike's videos, but most importantly, trust in God. This video reminded me that it's ok to call God, Papá Dios (Father/Dad God) when I pray with my son, it just feels right since we're having a direct conversation with our father. Thanks Fr. Mike for the teminder. Oh and Papá Dios is eorking through his healing hands, I am starting to feel a bit better

St Augustine defines the Trinity as “God the Lover (i.e. the Father), God the Beloved (i.e. the Son), and the Love between them (i.e. the Holy Spirit)”. Once, a friend asked me to explain the Trinity. I was somewhat at a loss and tried one or two images, but in the end it was St Augustine’s definition that really got it across to her.

I have been enjoying this for the last few weeks. And the best that I have gotten on understanding the Trinity is that the God Head is the Father, His Word is Jesus and their breath is the Holy Spirit. Just like when I speak I hear my voice which would be my word and my breath goes with it, but Gods Word and Gods Breath has power and is living and active.

Thank you Father Mike, good topic. I also have wrestled with names for the Trinity. If I'm addressing all three, I say my Lord, and really use that for Jesus as well. To be specific I will call Jesus my Good Shepherd. I call God the father, Father Abba. And Holy Spirit, who is right beside me and helps me specifically day to day, hour to hour, Holy Spirit. I do love the words I am that God is. All these things help me understand the Trinity.💖

If you take issue with the word "Allah" being referenced in this comparitive way, perhaps this isnt the video for you. And, you are missing the point entirely. That comparison is such a small part of this homily. Listen next time. He's not wrong. This is the most comprehensive and applicable explanation of The Holy Trinity I've ever heard. And I'm not the only one who feels this way. Go ahead and read the comments. Just as you won't change your mind when confronted with the truth, mine will not succumb to the lie. Copts, EO, Arab speaking Christians do indeed use Allah to refer to God. But they know the distinction from Islam. Muslims seeing their liturgy would also immediately recognise the differences, too. Wa'l majdu lil Abbi wa'l Ibni wa Ruh il Quddusi al ana wa kulla awanin wa ila dahri duhur. Amin (Glory Be prayer) Bismil Abbi wal Ibni wal Ruh il Quddusi ilahil wahid. Amin. ( In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. One God. Amen) As an ex Muslim, I can confirm the notion of who God/Allah is, it's completely different in Islam. Its very sad that the average Muslim will never pick up the Bible.

@patriciajohnson1894 that isn't what they are saying. They are talking about the [English] translation of Allah is God. We as Christians do indeed call God, God. (I don't speak Arabic language, just what I've been told by those that do] Calling God, Abba, is a translation that means Father in English. This familial title is the sticking point for non-Christian Muslims and Jews alike. The point of this homily is teaching newly adopted Christians to use a term of endearment that recognizes the fatherly aspect of the Holy Trinity.

Noah spoke blessings over Japheth and Shem to be enlarged by Elohim and to bless Yahweh, but cursed Canaan to be a servant. When the Muslims rise above the curse of the servant into the role of sonship then they shall call him ABBA. Jesus had many parables about the difference between the servant and the son, and in John, he told his disciples I no longer call you servants, but friends. This signifies the ascent from servitude to friendship as seen in the case of Abraham who was called God's friend, but then after the resurrection Jesus called the disciples his brethren, and for Mary to tell them I go to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God, lifting us up even from the friendship of Abraham to the kinship of Christ! This shows how God raises up sons from the dust! In its essence we see through Noah the servitude of the Canaanites being likened to the taming of wild beasts, for a wild beasts must serve before it becomes domestic, Shem represents the domesticated animal, the dog, the cat, the "friend", but Japheth shows the blessing of the sonship, to be enlarged by the Father and to dwell in the tents of the domestic and to tame the wild beasts.

Thank you for this great homily (as always)! Just a minor note, the usage of "Abba" in modern Hebrew is not the same as it was in ancient Aramaic. That doesn't mean that "Dad" (or Papa or any of the other terms) are wrong, just that Abba was a more all-encompassing term for father than modern usage might suggest. I did deep dive on this once, it was pretty interesting!

🤔 Allah = God; Arabic-speaking Christians also call God "Allah". . . Rabb = Lord or Master; the term is used by Arabic-speaking Jews, Christians, and Muslims.

I am a catholic from Iraq. Please, please, PLEASE look in an Arabic-English dictionary. The word Allah does NOT mean ‘master’. It simply means ‘God’. My Arabic Bible is full of the word Allah. Unfortunately you just don’t understand what damage you cause by making English-speaking people think that Allah means anything other than God. The same one triune God is called Allah in Arabic. I also speak Aramaic. In Aramaic, Alaha is God. Abba is father, not an endearing Daddy or Dad, just Father.

In terms of language, the Arabic word “Allah” comes from the same root as the Hebrew “El” or “Elohim”.

Allah means God, Arab Catholics refer to God as Allah in their native language. Edit the inflammatory thumbnail.

Allah word came after the invasion of Mohammed. Before no coptics, syriacs and any other Christians ever used it. Because our church is based on Aramaic Syrian Christian Orthodox for last 2000 years in India we didn't have any word called Allah in our liturgy.

That's the handy thing about religion. It doesn't have to make any sense. You can just make anything up and claim that it is true.

Hi dear Father Mike, I’m a Christian from Nazareth, the Local born Christians of the Holy Land are all Arab, so.. Allah in the Christian bible literally means God, so in Nazareth، Jerusalem, Beit lahem… we have the Holy mass in Arabic and we use the word for God Allah Which comes from the word ilah (like elohim in Hebrew) Abba in Hebrew like the Arabic word (Aab) Lord in Arabic means Rab (like rabbi in Hebrew) In arabic the casual word for dad means Baba… They are Similar languages But because in islam they also say allah meaning God, in the west they think its a Name.. but no.. its not a name… its a word that is in all the churches and bibles😅 (abouna, is how we call our priests meaning our father) So dear abouna Mike, our language is so beautiful and peaceful… please don’t let how its viewed by the west to be scared to use its words.. elohim, ilah, alah are the dictionary words for God. Abouna, My friends and I watch your videos and listen to the bible in a year I would love to meet you and connect you with the local Christians, the born and raised here from generations and generations, since the time of Jesus, and recommend the best places to visit, if you ever visit my Hometown again
