Gigabyte now have a larger version of their Aero laptop, the Aero 17, so let’s find out if there's more to it than just being a larger Aero 15. I’ll be testing some content creation specific workloads, as well as gaming benchmarks, thermals and everything in between in this detailed review to help you decide if it's worth it.

No... I can guess he skipped thing like not enough power for one adaptor and heat of 20 hr plus used... Those is just bare minimum.. not enough info to buy those overexpensive laptop... I being avioding 17 for sometime now... since build quility drop down... i see those laptop in real life and i can tell u... it not as good as it can be...

True. But to make your gaming benchmarks even better, you should throw in at least 1 flight simulation game. Flight simulators are way more CPU intensive than all the games you have mentioned. Take X-Plane or Prepar3D for example. Flying over a city like LA at 1500ft with maximum settings for graphics, terrain, clouds, and ground traffic will reduce even the best gaming PC to tears.

I was looking for a laptop for work (graphics design + programming) to replace my previous MSI gaming laptop where the keyboard was breaking again - for the 2nd time. I was considering going with an Asus strix 2 or 3 until I found out about the Aero 17. After researching it on Notebookcheck and watching plenty of videos where I could find them, this video was ultimately what helped me pull the trigger and land on buying. I bought the 4K / i7 /1660ti version (the RTX version was out of my budget) and upgraded the ram from 8gb to 16 (pulled from previous laptop) and added a 2TB Intel 660p NVMe SSD ($200). I have been VERY impressed with this laptop and I have no buyer's remorse thusfar. It's very powerful and surprisingly thin. I didn't expect to like it as much as I do but I'm extremely satisfied so far with it. What surprised me most is how thin it is and how good the build quality is. I wanted something I could do work on and this thing is keeping up with some pretty demanding workloads from me. The screen is outstanding and one of my favorite features. It's 4K, very color accurate, and it gets brighter than I reasonably need. The keyboard is tactile and feels right. My typing speeds still hover around 110wpm and haven't gone down really. It doesn't scream "I'm a gamer!!!" with ridiculous design aesthetics. It's something I can bring into the office comfortably to get some work done, and it can game very well too. It can do some 4K gaming on high settings, but 1440p is its sweet spot for getting 60fps locked with mostly ultra settings (Gears 5, GTA5, Apex Legends). The metal build feels great and gives it a premium feel overall. The bottom panel comes off very easily... but I suspect I voided my warranty... even though there's no obvious "warranty void if removed" stickers (there were 2 screws with plastic over them, but I'm not sure if that was a design choice or to detect if someone opened it). The battery life is outstanding. I had a 4 hour plane trip yesterday and it lasted the whole time and then some. Downsides: the keyboard deck is a little sharp on the edges - you can feel the edge on your wrist, but it's not too bad. The Gigabyte control center app is complete hot garbage (and doesn't open without AC power connected??). Sometimes it takes a while for it to wake up from sleep mode, which is odd. Or sometimes the fingerprint reader won't come back for 10 seconds when coming out of sleep. Coil whine is on the loud side, but very easy to drown out with any amount of ambient noise. It gets very hot to the touch during prolonged gaming sessions. Like to the point where holding your hand over the underside near where the heat pipes are is very uncomfortable. But as long as it's on a desk, you're fine really. Also, the power brick takes more juice than some plane AC outlets can provide, but the battery life is excellent so it's not a huge deal - unless you want to game heavy on it mid-flight. Overall, I really love this thing so far. I'm glad I pushed my budget up a little and went for it. Money well spent so far. Thanks for the review video!
@JarrodsTech
@JarrodsTech 4 года назад
Thanks for sharing your experience with it, and good to hear it's mostly going well! I heard about the control center + battery thing, don't think I noticed that myself or maybe it wasn't an issue for me, not sure, but either way Gigabyte have acknowledged that so hopefully it gets fixed in a future update at least.

@@JarrodsTech You should test whether key functions like the control center and other settings are accessible regardless of whether the laptop is plugged in or on battery power. You can then add a section to your reviews in-case of any hiccups faced in modifying such settings.

On the Hardware Canucks review they stressed the laptop was uncomfortable to type on, the track pad wasn't glass and that it was bad and they also said the USB type C ports were 3.2 gen 1 as opposed to 3.1 gen 2. Hey jarrod, some important questions. Forgetting the price would you get the new Alienware area 51m or and msi gs65 or msi raider? Or that new intel gaming laptop? Important questions here. Also, what msi laptop work good with dying light at 15 inches 9th gen gtx that are not bulky?
@JarrodsTech
@JarrodsTech 5 лет назад
Personally I actually use my laptop to travel overseas with, so I'd go the GS65 for the portability and the specs are still plenty good enough. I have no experience with that game so cannot comment, I don't know what it needs to run.
@obnoxious2122
@obnoxious2122 5 лет назад
Jarrod'sTech wow, thanks. I was already looking towards getting msi. But will the gs65 hit a lot of frames for it being thin? Oh and I mentioned the game because I have the razer blade maxed out and upgraded but it couldn’t run that game and it lagged the whole game and would be super slow, and I played that for like 40 hours. So, do you think it will hit a lot of frames (I’m not getting the new laptop because I can’t play my favorite game lol, I realized it kinda sound like that.)

I really like having a larger 17" screen vs a 15" one. For content creation, do you think it would be worth getting this with the 9750 and 1660Ti configuration for but with the 4K HDR screen? It's just there's about a $2000 price difference between the two and, while I'd like an i9, I don't really need anything from the RTX cards and $2000 is a bit much extra just for that. Or should I wait and see what's coming out soon?

I wanted to ask about something you mentioned in the video: you cannot charge the laptop via the thunderbolt port? Is this because it requires more than 100 watts? I would like the extra performance of the i9 but wonder if I need the larger casing etc to achieve that? Thanks for your thoughts.

I have been drooling over this laptop for months now (glad I have a spill-proof thinkpad). Then I realized that with comet lake there would be built-in 3.1 gen2, wifi6 and thunderbolt support, leaving manufacturer with more wiggle room for other goodies. Now I have decided to upgrade my 5-yr-old thinkpad with Sata ssd, WiFi cars and 16gb ram, which would last long enough for a real 10nm processor (or a bankrupt intel and a trust-level amd). But I really want this one... goodbye my lover, goodbye my friend, you have been the one, you have been the one for me...

I mean this still has WiFi 6 and USB 3.1 Gen2 already, not really sure what benefits you get having those in the CPU though. H series 10nm is probably quite some time away, seems like 10th gen will be 14nm still and not til next year so I guess depends how long you're willing to wait. Thanks for the review Jarrod. I have a question: I'm trying to decide between this or the aero 15 oled for photo editing and light gaming. I like the color and contrast of the oled screen, but I fear the static UI of my editing software will burn in to the screen as I will use it constantly. Do you think I should get the aero 17 or is burn in no longer an issue for my use case?

Apparently burn in is less of a concern with these current gen OLEDs, but I have no idea as no one has used them long term yet so it's hard to say for now. Personally I'd go 15" because I prefer the portability, but that's me.

Jarrod'sTech I just finished performing a 2 week run on it and to be honest, I was impressed and disappointed at the same time. My top pros for keeping the machine were the screen, battery life, ability to control the CPU / GPU wattage with ease & the extremely low DPC latency across all battery and CPU/GPU PL settings. My top cons and reasons why I returned my unit were the coil whine, which was incredibly loud on my unit when on power / turbo boosted, the locked down BIOS and the way the Control Center is reliant on XTU. I much rather have the option to tie in CC with Throttlestop, which has proven to provide a better overclocking and undervolting experience once set up correctly. Overall, IMO, this laptop is quite excellent for general users such as casual gamers and content creators, however for enthusiasts and sound sensitive audio engineers (coil whine can leech through audio systems and can make mixing a unpleasant experience) as myself, it’s a hard pass. I don’t really have hope that gigabyte will change how their control center operates and I doubt they will open up their BIOS like MSI or Eluktronics.

MSI Afterburner for OC, Throttlestop of UV. No risk in GPU OC, you can't raise power limits. Bit more risk with CPU OC, but I don't touch voltage, just increase wattage with Intel XTU and clock speed, if thermals can handle it then should be fine.

I’m on the fence of whether I should get the Aero 17 ( i7-9750, 2070, 144hz - $3799) and the Aero 15 ( i9-9980, 2070, 4K - $4399 ) from Affordablelaptops. I can’t find any thermal testing of the Aero 15 with that CPU anywhere yet, which I think will perform differently to the Aero 17 due to the enlarged headroom of airflow with the bigger model. What would you personally think? The variables have me in stitches of indecisiveness, as in an ideal world, there would be an option of an Aero 17 w/ i9-9880, 2070 and a 144hz screen, which I also cannot find the option of ANYWHERE lol!

Yeah I think the 8 core in the 15 might be a bit worse off compared to the results of the 17 shown here, however if you're doing multicore work I still think the extra two cores would be beneficial, comes down to the workload you're doing.

@@JarrodsTech It would only make sense for it, damn physics! I intend to do video processing/exporting but unlikely 4K for some time, high MP raw photo editing, with the occasional gaming on an external monitor here and there. It’s just so difficult to gauge a decision without seeing results and reviews out there haha! Plus I live in Cairns where summer gets ridiculously hot and A/C use might not always be an option… The Aero 17 i7 2070 is looking really attractive and considering how your test performed thermally, I can only imagine the i7 cool even better. But then there’s the additional core performance of the i9… And being on edge with the thought of an i9 crammed into the 15’s chassis, it’s all up in the air! So far it seems Affordablelaptops has the 15 variant in stock, and Scorptec has the Aero 17 variant in stock. I was hoping to go with Kong but they aren’t in stock.

Just had a bit more of a thorough look and I may strike the Aero 15 w/ i9 off the list, as it runs the OLED panels instead of the HDR ones and according to Pccasegear’s website, they’re discontinued? @JarrodsTech
@JarrodsTech 5 лет назад
Yes probably, unless the cooling system is actually different. There aren't many machines I've tested both 15" and 17", but in the few cases I've been able to do that I've never seen a difference in cooling/performance. Some machines like the Scar III apparently have an extra heat pipe on the 17" so that may help a little. It's hard to say what the difference is with the Aero series as I tested both machines with different CPUs, however the 17 does appear to have a bit bigger heatsinks near the edges and uses that extra space so that may help.

@JarrodsTech
@JarrodsTech 5 лет назад
Yes, if you're getting a new 2x 16gb kit it should be fine, otherwise if you are using an existing stick make sure the speed/timings match. If you have an Aero it is more picky with memory. I can't see core count helping download speed at all, it will only benefit tasks that need more threads, such as video exporting as that smashes every core it can get its hands on.
