Gigantic Grain Pile gets off the Ground!!!!!
Happy Agriculture Week!!!
In today's video, I will show you how they get the gigantic grain pile off the ground at the elevator in Conrad, Montana. In a previous video "How Farmers Make Money" you see the 600,000-bushel grain pile next to the giant grain bins or elevator. Now you get to see how they auger it and put it in semi-trucks to get tested and weighed and put in the elevator. The grain will be shipped off by railroad cars to its destination. This is all part of farming in Montana big sky country! My Dad flies the drone over the process so you can see the grain augered into the top of the big trucks. He even lands the drone on his pickup. My Dad loves his drone! The views are really spectacular. It is a bit cloudy. You get to drive with me down the highway to the grain elevator and see the vast wheat fields on the way too! I hope you enjoy my video and thank you for watching!

My Story…
Hello. My name is Kate Stephens, and I am a 16-year-old 4th generation farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north-central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was two years old. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm, and I hope that my Farm to Fashion and Farm to Table products can help educate people about where their food comes from in a fun way. That is how Kate's Ag became a reality. I hope you love my products as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years.

Hello Kate at Kate's Ag, from Sydney, Australia After receiving a 1/100 year storm event, I was happy to receive your vlog via RU-vid. * to store the grain on the ground: obviously a exception yield? *looks like snow has gone. *it is still cold in Montana, you are wearing a winter jacket? *the truck contractor would be excited about (buying a new auger conveyor for loading). Hope all is well under the Big Sky country and always looking forward to Kate's Ag. Best wishes John 🌏🇭🇲

Years ago when there was a large surplus of corn, my local elevator in Southern MN built a corn pile that was 6 million bushels. I went and drove around it once unfortunately don't have a picture. The co -op's millwrights built a self propelled pile loader similar idea to that one except larger and the semi would back under the conveyor towards the unloader, the conveyor didn't have a spout,it would shoot the corn all the way to the front of the truck,then gradually slow down a bit and fill it toward the back .I think it could load a 1000 bu. semi in 3 minutes. I think they still use the homemade machine,it was built well.

That elevator is also able to load unit grain trains. Like you said, everything depends on the class and variety of the wheat. The flour mill I work in receives hard wheat from the northern plains, and the high protein wheat goes to either commercial bakeries for bread, or to distilleries for food grade industrial alcohol. You need to see if one of your local flour mills will give you a tour for your viewers. They can learn about grain blending, grain cleaning, and flour milling. Since you deal with barley, alcohol fermentation and distillation would be interesting too! Thank you for sharing!
@KatesAg
@KatesAg 3 года назад
Thank you for your great info and suggestions. I planned on touring a flour mill but because of the health situation was not able to. I did a video on malt barley, which was really interesting and I'm excited to see how they then distill it too.

Some years ago, while in high school, I spent one Summer working at a grain elevator in Northwestern Kansas. Among other things, I helped build our pile of wheat on the ground and do this. It was impressive. Successive Summers, I worked on farms so got to see the other side. My family owned a family farm established in the 1880's in Southeast Kansas and we spent most Summers there during my earlier years. We didn't have drones then, so your Dad's view was fun. Later, my family moved to Great Falls, where I went to college and enjoyed seeing the beautiful Big Sky Country. And the amazing strip farming. Totally unlike the Kansas farms. I've been to Conrad and all around that area. This brings back great memories. Thanks for creating these videos. Very interesting. Dave

Kate , Every video you have is very informative . I thought the Super - B's would be able to haul more but they may have a total weight limit . In my state you are only able to have a 80,000 pound weight limit . One week we were custom harvesting some corn & I was just a bit overloaded , I averaged 925 bushels per load , on my 40 foot trailer . Please don't tell anyone I may get in trouble .. lol You should let your dad land the drone in your outstretched hands . Thank you for another great video .

Even in Ohio we put grain on the ground but we have so much moisture that a large expandable tarp is a necessity. To bad that elevator doesn't have a railroad line next to it so that they can send out grain trains which would help keep the grain off the ground

Thanks for the video! It is always a pleasure to see the landscape of Montana, and of course the agricultural facilities there. You explain that nicely too. Maybe you can show me all this in person, because I really plan to visit the USA. But there are still a few things that separate me that still have to be dealt with. After that, when the pandemic is finally under control, I will make my plans. But I already have Montana as good as on schedule. This is thanks to your vlogs. Maybe then I will contact you. But don't worry, it won't be a robbery 😂. Maybe you enjoy showing your homeland to a curious German. But it will take a while until then. Stay healthy and greetings to the family! Stefan Jung

So Kate here is a math Question..What weighs more.. a Grain of grain or a grain of salt...The video was fantastic. Thanks again for the information. Have a great week.

Thank you so much for the great question and awesome and kind words! I really appreciate your great encouragement. I don't know the answer! LOL But I will weigh them both. I imagine a grain of salt but it depends on how big the salt grain is!!!

Fascinating video Kate. Storing grain like that would be a total no no in Ireland. It would mould and start to germinate in the dampness here. Amazing to see the side of the wheat pile falling into the auger look just like the side of a mini mountain with little cliffs and pinnacles. It shows how materials behave and flow with the exact same patterns at small scale or larger scale, a phenomenon known as fractals. Does the wheat in the pile form a kind of outer skin to make it weatherproof and does that outer skin get weather damaged or does it stay good?

Thank you for your great and kind words. I can hardly wait to visit Ireland!! We have so little moisture here that piling the grain is no problem. It is pretty neat how the grain looks like a river flowing down to the auger from a big grain mountain. Yes the wheat pile forms an outer skin which is really interesting.

What explains the different colors in the pile of wheat? Is it different strains of wheat?
@KatesAg
@KatesAg 3 года назад
Thank you for your great question. The grain that is exposed to air and sunlight turns a different color.

Very interesting, that auger was impressive. When there’s a large surplus, usually farmer don’t make money, is that true this year.

Great vid where does wheat go does it stay in USA or abroad 🤔flying with feet on ground😎
@KatesAg
@KatesAg 3 года назад
Hi Pat!! I think that the wheat is going to Japan. That is where most of our exports go. First they go by train to the coast then they go on a ship to their destination.

Hi Kate, a very informative and interesting video on grain storage and how to handle the wheat. I had heard of wheat piles before, also sugar beets, and have never seen the operation. Thanks so much. What percent of the wheat is lost to rot from the initial wheat put on the ground and the results of animals walking on the pile? Thanks!! Best wishes for a great 2021 crop. - Dean from Minnesota
