Welcome! It's time for another repotting adventure here in the Arizona desert - repotting an 8' Pencil Cactus that had gotten extremely top-heavy. It was planted into a 35" fiberglass pot to give it lots of room to grow & to keep it from tipping over. Yes, the winds had blown it over multiple times & it was tied to the wall. The plant was too heavy for me to lift back up - time for some repotting action!
Time of year the repotting was done: October 11
Warning: Be very careful when you repot this plant. If you break a branch, it emits a sap, which is considered to be toxic. Some people are highly sensitive to it.
You'll learn about:
1) The size pot appropriate for a plant this big & heavy.
2) The soil mix for a succulent growing outdoors in a hot, dry climate.
3) The steps taken to ensure successful repotting & growth.
Here's the aftercare: I let the plant settle in for 7 days before watering. I watered the plant 6 days before the repotting process.
I will water the plant every 2 weeks in the hot summer months, & every 4 weeks in the winter months. The watering schedule will be adjusted depending on the weather.
My Pencil Cactus, botanical name Euphorbia tirucalli, is now very happy!
Thanks for watching, Nell xo

I have the sister plant-sticks on fire which I love seeing the red branches in January and February here in the Phoenix metro. Thank you for the update.

Hi - I have a Sticks On Fire too! It grows in a pot near my patio. It tends to grow denser than the PC. Nell

Thank you! I have a pencil cactus and am in humid Florida. Any advice on how to get mine as big and beautiful as yours?

Great plant! Does it need any type of protection when Tucson has frost or even colder temps?

Yes, it is! This plant grows next to the house, so it's somewhat protected. I've never covered it, even when it was a 3' cutting. The lowest we got last winter in my area was 27F. Nell

Hi Nel. I have two questions. Can you plant pencil cactus in the ground where you live in Arizona and have you thought about keeping the plant pruned so it doesn't get so big and hard to manage? I live in Florida and have several in pots that I keep pruned as I have to bring them in when we have frost/freeze.

Hi - Yes, a Pencil Cactus can grow in the ground here. That being said, "Sticks On Fire" is much more commonly seen in the ground. I've pruned this plant 4 or 5 times now. I like the height, but may prune it again in a year or 2. Nell

Mine is a time plant, when it was 2 years old at my place it had something like buds... Do they bloom? After some day those just fell off... But I am curious, please let me know. Also, mine is in a very small pot though the plant has grown really well....

Will you root prune it to keep it in the same size pot?
