This is a 64" spot Fresnel Lens with a max temperature above 3000˚F.
www.greenpowers...
The concrete and rock shatters from the temperature shock. Slowly adding heat allows for melting. The rock was exposed for 60 seconds and the two pieces heated 8 ounces of water from 68˚F to about 130˚F within seconds.

You two have such fun, and provide a real-life educational experience with these posts. Thanks so much. I've turned some friends onto you guys and they have taken some of the things they've learned to orphanages in South Africa to help there. Heart in hand, you are good people.

Sink in water for 1 hour. Remove and allow to dry for 24 hrs. Then you can place in the sun to dry. The water anneals (sort of annealing usually refers to heat) the cement allowing slower cure time and a better cross linked structure preventing tiny cracks/fissures. Bubble holes can be filled with cement. Wet the bowl first prior to smoothing layer as this provides better adhesion. 24 hours is fine if your mixture was perfect. Most add too much water. Depends on humidity and weather.

I love your videos. Not just instructional, but interesting and funny. You should put bloopers at the end of your videos, just for fun.

Dan that is hot as hell! You could melt bronze with that. That is one heck of heater.

I agree. This setup begs application. Casting the aluminum cans you find on the streets into something pretty and useful would be awesome. And a lava rock casted in the shape of a statue, wouldn't that be kinda novel? You might do a small one in one go, and a larger one by just topping the mold off bit by bit. Dan, I applaud your work and video editing quality. Awesome filters. Glad to subscribe.

Hi, Pure portland cement vs adding sand creates a stone like structure vs cement deck. Builders mix because of cost and also decks should have rough surface for wet no slip etc. The lower the sand to cement mix the higher the strength rating. Bowls are small volume so one 80lb bag can make many. Cement is endothermic when hardening. once the molded material is firm (cure in the shade higher humidity) about 36hrs. spray with water. After 72 hours fill with water or sink in water.

You could make an array of small mirrors to guide that ray to pretty much anything. or a tube with reflective interior.

How can I get a fresnel lens 64" like yours? I would like to use it to desalinate salty water near ecuatorial line at Sechura desert in Peru, where you can have almost 365 sunny days a year.

I would love to see one of these pointed at a large metal block with water channels through it. It would be nice to see how effectively you can heat a large volume of water with it.

You should build a frame for it and run water though the heat to run a small steam engine!

HAve you ever made your own fresnel lens? I was thinking of buying a sheet of clear plexi and use a router or dremal to carve a spiral from the middle out. Clean excess plastic shards and dust. Take a hand torch and hit the plexi just enough to remove cloudy or matte finishes without melting or discoloring the plexi. Hopefully this creates a fresnel.

Closer is better vs further away. The spot/concentration diameter is the same x" before optimal x" after optimal BUT the pre-focal point is better as the light has less debris distortion. watch?v=TYoc_V4_6iE

entertaining but wheres the science part of your show, eg. how useful is the amount of heat created to convert to power. My question also applies to your trough mirror video, it 'looks' like a good idea and is obviously a cheaper solution to solar panels but what would be the power made when transferring it to a steam motor for example next to a solar array taking up the same amount of space make?

Interesting, I doubt gazing into that bright spot is nutritious for your naked eyes. I would even be concerned about my camera sensor. Could you do a back of the envelope calculation how many watts sun delivers on the spot. Maybe if we new the color temperature of molten aluminum and the boltzmann dist of it we could guesstimate. But there are simply too many variables to factor, ambient air the concrete soaking some energy due to chemical reactions etc. I am looking forward for an answer Thanks

love the slow motion and sound, it's actually relaxing to close your eyes and listen, anyhow,, I've been watching some of your lens videos, I saw some last year but was building turbines so my interests were different at the time, now I'm curious, what is the reason for the drilled holes in the lenses? when you get a moment can you point me to any info or vids that explain this?

Just a quick warning to others about melting aluminum cans (soda, beer, etc). Don't breath the fumes! Pretty sure Dan was upwind of the can when he was doing the melting, since he's a smart guy. There's all kinds of nasty chemicals that get released when the paint on the cans is burned. Same warning goes for if you're melting down cans in a furnace. Stand back when you first put the cans in. After they melt down, the paint residue floats to the top as dross and should be skimmed off.

Hey Dan, could you try using a crucible like the guys who run the forges do? Collecting solar energy is getting pretty easy by a number of methods but no one has shown how to combine known forging/crucible techniques and solar oven techniques...A thought.
