The next day I literally ran down the street to go to a record store called J&R's Music World to buy the album which I ran into the ground. Gil was a helluva band leader! The good old days. +h2k 70's guy You are correct, Gil told stories of Black life. He evoked Memphis Delta Soul and Blues Music to tell the struggles of day to day life for Black Americans. The life of the Black Southerners juxtaposed with the struggles of Urban African Americans. His soulful, Poetic Afrocentric message told the story of both simultaneous marred by Political Oppression and racism that created and kept them both in survival mode. He told our story like no other. Encompassing all the artistic hats you listed in your post. He to them by weaving a Poetic Song or Prose with the Soulful music that was indicative of the tremendous individual musicians who came together to created with him. They were master musicians in their own right. Gil was one of a Kind, a truly Master Artist!

He was a great song writer and poet, every time I listen to his music, I think about my youth, the promise, the challenges that were to come. Wonderful to read the thoughts of others who were touched by him in the comments below. aged 19 in 1991 a girlfriend played me 'no knock' and told me the wonderful news that he regularly gigged in europe. . . .Saw him regularly over the next decade, some of the clearest memories i have from gigging, the whole venue absolutely mesmorized by Gil and co. particularly at festivals where many of the crowd didn't know him before. His political stuff is insightful and absolutely as relevant today as it was then. I listen to him often and along with the head shaking awe of his music I realise he changes how i feel inside about life, gives me fire , inspires, .you know-..today's the day !!

Peace and blessings be-to the soul of brother Gil Scott-Heron as he has transition on to the greatest spiritual existence of being. Gil through his musical genius, lyrically communicated the soul and pulse of the heart, experiences and pain, of the conditions plaguing displayed African people in "Amerikkka". As she (Amerikkka) super-imposing her will and ill-intent to captivate, steal, and control Afrikan people's natural, creative, spiritual accord for progress and elevation. There is so many points that can be expressed about the quality and poignant words composed in the messages reflecting this brother's culture shaking and inspiration to the music industry, as well to all people who would hear his voice paired with the musical arrangements of the songs he sang, and the poems he uttered. This tribute of recognition is a testimony to his influence in the mental development of this writer's life along with so many other brothers and sisters, standing for truth, freedom, peace, justice, equality, and liberation. Gil's vibrational soul impinging words are a powerful ingredient to the recipe for soul liberation to self-identity, expression and cultural advancement. Considering the knowledge, awareness and understanding Brother G. S. Heron, has armed this writer with throughout my lifetime, as well as the person it shaped me to become. Long live one of our noble kings who sojourned in AmeriKKKa for freedom and deliverance!

This LP, Cassette, CD will never get old its speaks to every generation if they are introduced to it by the Parents, Grand Parents, Uncles, Aunts and cousins that's what keeps our music alive through out the ages. Spead the Music and Love at the same time then watch the mericle happen. The joy spreads like the cool breeze 😊

GSH gave up so much for us. He sacrificed his health and well being to be a clear channel for all the universal truth that flowed through him. I will love him to my last breath. High price to pay when you have deep love for African Descended people.

So if a great poet and artist ruins himself with drugs he "sacrificed his health" and "gave up so much for us" now? How does that work? Are you sure he didn't just take all those drugs because he liked them?

@@truefunksoul8638 Keep in mind! We know a mans walk only our Creator does. I think Reverend was being kind, we’re taught if we don’t have something kind to say about someone don’t say anything. That’s the teaching I came up with, I do understand there are people who didn’t or isn’t taught this, just told and not practiced. His walks in life and his experience we may not agree with it’s cool. You could be right, he might have liked it, so let’s enjoy his music that he left for anyone to listen to, that’s my drug his music✊🏿

I was 19 years old and heard Gil for the first time. I searched at so many record shops for one of his records and found this one. This particular shop had a “listening station” and I put this on and turned it off after a few seconds because I knew! I tell my friends and loved ones if the house is burning down, this is the thing you save for me. It’s the pinnacle of incredible music. Thank you Gil and Brian for creating this, see you on the other side
