Part 17: • Gilbert Arenas: Draymo...
Part 15: • Gilbert Arenas on Why ...
Part 1: • Gilbert Arenas on Payi...
--------
Former NBA player Gilbert Arenas spoke about fellow player Vince Carter, stating that he could have reached the same level as sports legends like Michael Jordan, LeBron James, or Kobe Bryant had he been more dedicated to developing his skills. Arenas acknowledged that Carter possessed a natural athletic ability and thought that these innate qualities could have propelled him to greatness. He labeled Carter as 'lazy,' explaining that this referred less to a lack of effort and more to Carter's decency as a person which didn’t quite match the competitive intensity exhibited by the likes of Jordan, LeBron, and Kobe. On a related note, Arenas discussed the often skewed perception of athlete work ethic, stating that the individual habits and routines of players can be key factors in their performance.

Vince Carter suffered from the same affliction that Ken Griffey Jr. did. They were too talented for their own good. It came off as they don't care or they are disinterested, but truth is they were just so much more gifted than their contemporaries that the game appeared too easy for them. Which, in turn, kept them from achieving the highest of highs in their respective sports. Junior famously never picked up one weight throughout his career. Just turned his hat backward and hit the ball as far as guys that would pump cattle steroids and workout 3x a day. The level of natural talent that takes is unreal.

I got a exNBA Friend who says Vince was by far the Greatest Talent he’s ever seen. And my friend has a video talking about playing Kobe 1on1 on RU-vid. He said what most don’t know. Everything Vince can do….. He can do it with his left hand as well as right. Exactly the same way. Shooting left handed 3pters as well as right handed. Dunks left or right leg equally. Jumping off 2 feet turning left or right. All over 40inches. While Dunking either hand. Or shooting either hand. My friend could dunk from the free throw line. And I saw him hit 43three pointers in a row. Wearing jeans. Injured early in a 3year contract in the NBA. He says No Player ever more gifted than Vince💯

You are correct. Lamar was one of the most talented in the league. He actually had the ability to average 25ppg 10rpg 8apg, and I’m talking about in the early 2000s when those numbers would have been mind blowing, but he didn’t have the mentality. It wasn’t that he didn’t have next level work ethic, he had a below par work ethic and it showed when he had injury after injury from not living the lifestyle of a professional athlete. Lamar just thrived on talent. His best role was when he was a 6 man and he didn’t have that pressure. He could just ball and not worry being a top player on the floor. But if Lamar had the mentality and work ethic, he would easily be a top 10-20 player of all time.

MJ got drafted by Chicago when the team was a bottom feeder in the NBA and made them a championship team. One thing about Michael Jordan that everyone says is how hard he worked as a player. His work ethic was supreme. Some people work harder than others and some people who have all the talent with potential to be great don't put in enough effort because it comes easy. Kobe Bryant was obsessed with getting better as a Basketball player. I can only imagine how great Vince would be if he had Kobe's mind. So, to me. It's just excuses to justify someone's lack of work ethic. Vince Carter "coasted" through a 20 something year career and I remember being surprised he never quite panned out to the player I thought he could be. Vince was more athletic than Kobe AND Tracy Mcgrady. He lack the work ethnic , drive and intensity of Kobe and Mike and Lebron.

For once, I agree with Gil. I remember Vince Carter. Athletically, Vince Carter was a hybrid of Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins. He was more athletic than Kobe AND Tracy McGrady and had all the physical tools to be better than both of them if he had the work ethic to develop his skills to the highest level. Vince underachieved. I guess that's hard for some people to hear about themselves.

Watch that legendary 2000 Dunk Contest. Kenny Smith Calls Vince, “He’s Jordan with a bigger body”, and he really was; he had all the physical gifts like Jordan but with a naturally larger frame. Jordan famously had to hit the weights to get up to around 215 lbs. for those two 3-Peats, when he was around 200 lbs. the beginning of his career. Vince came out of College about the same height as Jordan, but with a bigger frame and bone structure he was around 220-25 naturally. I always thought they exaggerated his weight because he looks thinner on TV, but in person you see his frame and he really was “Jordan with a bigger body”.

People have short memories. Vince was a monster until he got injured shortly after the Olympics. Then he lost about 4 inches off his vertical and he was no longer special. Then he got older and lost even more athleticism and by the time he hit 28 years old he was a shell of what he once was when he had that 44 inch vertical. Same thing happened to Blake Griffin and Dwight Howard.
@maximusmeridius2306

@@maximusmeridius2306 You don't make up for a major loss of athleticism. Could Vince had worked harder on his game? Maybe, but I'm not going to question another man's heart especially somebody who has what it takes to jump over a 7'2 human being.
