I remember hearing Gilbert was pissed about them playing that message of his real voice. It's really impressive how he has managed to appear in his character for decades without almost ever being heard using his real voice.
Yeah. We all knew that it wasn't his real voice, it's just really weird that no one looked him straight in the eye and told him to chill tf out and talk like a normal person. It was a different time back then.
He actually does use his real voice during part of his old stand up routine, but it seems like he's doing an impression of a normal sounding person. Kinda genius really.
@@Iampatrix I feel kind of stupid not knowing this, that he used to use his normal voice all the time. I just had never heard it before, being from after that time. Thanks for the info on it.
@@Karemaker yeah, I'm old enough to remember his standup heh. But he does stay in character the majority of the time so lots of people don't know. Even during his routine the audience usually didn't know that was his real voice, which is why it always got a huge laugh. This man who's always hunched over, squinting, and screaming suddenly looks normal out of nowhere...it was a good bit.
@@caligrownvisuals6717 he clearly was passionate about acting and comedy and that was the way he did it. Not everything needs to be pathologized. You sound like a really fun guy.
If you want to listen to a whole interview in his real voice, one was released after he died ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6x9U9ojBeyQ.html
Guy: "Hey, aren't you Gilbert Gottfried?" Gilbert: *in his normal voice* "No, but I get that a lot." Guy: "Oh, okay." *guy leaves* Gilbert: "Works every time."
It’s still hard to believe that this is his real voice. Especially crazy that this and his SNL work are the only examples I’ve been able to find where he’s not doing the voice. He recorded hundreds of episodes of his own podcast “in character”, talking for hours at a time in a voice that’s apparently not natural to him, and it never slipped or faltered once. I guess since he’s done the voice consistently through his career, it became pretty natural to him. Still weird though, imagine being his personal friend and doing something like a podcast with him, and having an hour long conversation with him using a totally different voice than he does in private.
@@GHOSTbirdnatureLOVER listen to how he speaks on snl....of course he used a fake voice....but he ended up doing it so much that it became normal for him to use it
@@thewkovacs316 What do you mean by normal? He was putting it on his whole life. Here's audio from a for-print interview from 2016. Real voice: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6x9U9ojBeyQ.html
@@GHOSTbirdnatureLOVER listen to him. because he knows the interview was straight for print, he used his real voice. the doc was the only time when he knew he was being recorded where he didnt use the fake voice. unless it was when he called gary and left a message. i just miss the guy
+AceTheFace954 -- Yeah, but Bobcat Goldthwait's natural voice is just a calmer version of his onstage voice. I can still recognize his voice. It still has that nervouse, shaky tone. Whereas Gilbert Gottfried sounds like an utterly different person. Also, I can't talk about Bobcat without mentioning what a great filmmaker I think he is. _World's Greatest Dad_ was a masterpiece, IMO, the best movie Robin Williams ever starred in. Bobcat wrote and directed that. _Shakes the Clown_ was very impressive for a first-time, low-budget film. I think writing and directing was his true calling in life, although he is very funny in stand-up and the Police Academy movies. I used to listen to his first album, _Meat Bob,_ repeatedly! I'm a big fan, is what I'm saying. As for Gilbert Gottfried, his _Dirty Jokes_ album is delightful. A modern-day comedian simply telling one joke after another. No stories, no recurring themes -- just simple, filthy-dirty jokes. What a concept!
Ben Culture I never knew he made his own films. I always just thought he was one of the funniest guys I had ever seen growing up. someone I can never take serious because he's so damn funny lol. well I'm impressed. that's quite a talent.
I met Gilbert Gottfried when I was the Front Office Manager at a hotel he was staying at. I asked him for his autograph (which I really shouldn't have done - but it was back in the 80's - a long time ago) and he looked and sounded completely normal and totally unlike his persona. He was sad that he didn't have any pictures with him to sign for me but was very happy to sign a message on the hotel's letterhead. I thought he was very kind and good-hearted. A really nice man. I still have that autograph framed on my rec room wall.
'80s* Don't know why people write it like "80's." That would mean something that belongs to the number 80, or "80 is/has." :-P I know, even professionals make that mistake, but it gets grating seeing it all the time. 🤣
@@DiffEQ Did you seriously go through and find every time someone said RIP and leave the same stupid comment about resting vs being dead? Do you not understand the concept of a euphemism? Do you seriously have nothing better to do than troll about this?
If you watch his old stand up routine he does an "impression" of a normal sounding guy...which is basically his real voice. Got a huge laugh every time.
I recently revealed the genders of my two girlfriends. It got a lot of hate and now has 30 times more dislikes than likes. I am really sad that people can be so mean. Sorry for using your comment to talk about my problems, dear pa
That moment when a jew voice is better and more valuable than Vin's. (Three jews' voices in the context of this discussion...Gilbert, Howard, and Gene. Sorry Vin.)
Gil was always cast as a supporting character but with main character energy, I never thought his passing would sting so much. He made a bigger impact than some may recognize. We miss you, truly irreplaceable.
@@DiffEQ Dudr shut up. I don't know about you but if someone really appreciates the work a creator does and that creator dies, oh whaddya know, people are going to be upset! Come off your throne your highness good god
RIP. I had no friends growing up and was dealing with a lot of trauma, abuse, and depression but Cyberchase honestly got me through all this. That’s why that show and Gilbert will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart. For a moment in my toughest times I was able to actually be a kid thanks to Cyberspace. Thank you for all you’ve done for children around the world ❤
I'm part of a...uh..religion ! that believes, views, and worships The Gottfried as the true returned messiah, this video is a test that each brother has to endure to test our faith, so to me, this is like findig out that Jesus never resurrected.
I believe this religion pre-dates Zoroastrianism and even Atenism. Gottfrieidism is the original monotheistic faith according to Donald A. Mackenzie, anthropologist and historian.
R.I.P. he was such a legend. He will be missed my whole life. I loved that man, he cracked me up any time I ever saw or listened to him. Heartbroken 😔 😢 😭. First Norm, then Bob Saget, now it’s Gilbert Gottfried. Make it stop!!!
Oh, get a grip! You must be an old coot if you think the world is losing its talent. They had their moment in time... let it go. Missed your whole life? Was he your neighbor or cousin? Wow... you are over the top. Cloying. SMH
@@DiffEQ Why did you copy and paste this comment to everyone who said RIP? Either you think your comment is very clever or you are bored out of your mind.. maybe both. When people say RIP, the word "rest" is quite obviously a euphemism, hope that clears it up for you.
Yea. It used to be that people got famous on their stage character and played that character in every movie and show they were in since their name and character were what drew people in. Now a days it seems to be entirely about if the actor can pull off the adapted fictional character more than playing his own persona.
OMG! All these years never hearing his real voice til now...WOW! Thanks! Such an unusual talent. Thank you Gilbert and my condolences to your family ❤️
I can confirm this. About 30 years ago (!) I saw him at Caroline's. This was a couple of years after he was canned from SNL. He did his set in the voice we all know, and KILLED. A guy at my table was hyperventilating because he couldn't stop laughing to catch his breath. After the show, I spot Gilbert at the bar and go up to thank him, and tell him how I was a fan since SNL. He said, I must really be a fan to still like him after that season. He was super friendly, and yes, his voice was smooth and calm, just like this. His eyes were also wide open, and not squinting like they are whenever we see him on TV, etc. My take is that every time he's on air, in whatever context, he's doing part of his act.
You really have to give it to him for keeping the voice going for the rest of this episode even after his real speaking voice got outed. That was a man who really cared about the quality of his work.
I worked with him a few times on the Tonight Show. I totally remember this about him. The voice we all know recorded for the pre-tape jokes was 100% dead on that we shot. One of those days after he came into the wardrobe main room, asked to use our phone and I was floored how gentle and almost quiet he was. He’s a very kind man, good to all departments he worked with, was very sweet with me. I really got a kick to hear and see him off camera.
My haters throw rocks at me and IT hurts. I hope they don't throw The Rock at me because I like him as an actor. GAGAGAGAGA!!! I am funny!!! I am the funniest RU-vidr EVAH! Please agree, dear eye
@@filopride619 No, you're completely wrong. They said he sounds "scary" and he sounds like a "serial killer." "Gilbert Manson." "He was a very quiet man."
was watching a comedy central top 100 roast and heard his voice, looked him up just to find out he passed today... so unfortunate. A legend of comedy and acting!
Fuck I never thought we’d see this day. RIP Gilbert and thank you for some of the best shows in Stern history. I STILL wish we heard more of his true voice.
@@GHOSTbirdnatureLOVER I appreciate it, I’ve only heard the voicemail of him on the show & then his real voice back on his SNL features. It’s funny what a contrast it is, the real Gilbert sounds incredibly sweet
I met Gilbert at an audition. I had the nerve to stop and actually chat with him for a minute. Very nice soft-spoken guy. No airs at all, very approachable.
He has a soft, pleasant voice. I knew it for years! He's got a lot of range. So underrated for his talent. Another fun fact: he squinted his eyes as a standup comedian because the spotlights hurt his eyes, but it essentially because part of the shrill-voiced character, that's why he squints so much.
I discovered this in 2005, I was managing a restaurant at a casino where he was performing, and I sent our room service server home since it was slow, so I ended up taking food up to Gilbert's room, and I got to hear that normal voice, mind blowing! I remember as I handed him his food, I told him I hoped he didn't yell at me for bringing crackers with his soup, and that got a little chuckle out of him, but just a little one.. lol
To Gilbert Godfrey's family:Sorry for your loss...he was and is loved by many.I often got motivated by his humor. For this,I will definitely miss him.He has also left a legacy that will still make people laugh for years to come. RiP 🙏
He is, I met him in a hotel elevator once, just the two of us going up to the upper floors. I asked if he was still doing standup and he said yea, he's doing a show that night in fact at a nearby comedy club. I said have a good show, and he said thanks as he stepped off. Normal voice and nice guy.
@@kewkabe Aflak insurance dropped him for some things he said awhile back. Don't remember exactly what other then outlets saying it was career ending. Although everyone has a bad outburst occasionally and he for the most part can be ok. I just don't know much myself
When I was the MC at the comedy club many years ago, I opened for Gilbert Godfried. When I met him he used the same voice and it threw me off. He was a lovely person by the way. Calm, kind and professional. Rest in peace.
Oh shit i forgot about that 🤣 OG fairly odd parents was dope. Gilberts a legend for voicing so many characters from my childhood, but then being insanely raunchy and explicit with his comedy.
I could never listen to his “on” voice for too long, because it rode my last nerve into the ground. I did like his work, but I am learning to love the man he was posthumously.
That is a bold faced lie. Teller would never speak for it would certainly rob him of his mystical abilities, and then the mighty Penn would feast on his his nonmagical remains.
They've talked about Teller not talking many many times in various interviews. The first time I heard him speak, it was very unsettling, but you get used to it after a while. I got to meet the duo in Milwaukee like 27-ish years ago, and he and I had a nice chat about bear traps. He signed very few autographs, as people were shy about approaching him. Penn, on the other hand, was on the other side of the theater, wiped the stage blood off of his face with my then GF's shirt, _THEN_ he signed it.
Is this Andrew Dice Clay shitting on a comic for using a gimmick? I know not but you are a.... what’s the word.... jackass. His rich and famous from that voice, but I guess if you don’t like it....
I met Gilbert at the Helium Comedy Club in Portland after his show and he was very reserved and low keyed. We got to take a picture with him and shake his hand. A very down to earth guy.
Been watching Gilbert for decades. I expect that his voice and mannerisms are greatly exaggerated when performing; but I wasn’t expecting that. I think it’s actually a testament to his talent. Pretty cool. Not at all creepy.
I saw his comedy show at Rams Head Tavern in Annapolis MD in 2019 just before covid crap. It was awesome. I did cell phone videos of about 5 of his long jokes. I listened to each one 100 times since. Kills me. Especially the Genie in a bottle joke. Very talented. He hung out afterwards with the crowd-- photos afterwards. Nicest guy in the world!
How for the love of god can this man make a living making such a agonizing voice all day. Like he should have seriously injured his throat by now doing that damn voice. He literally does it so much, they had to dig into an answering machine to find a sample of his real voice. Rest In Peace. ~ Damn hard worker!
I wonder what it would be like it he voice acted with his natural voice? That would be pretty interesting, I'd like to see people's reactions to it, it could be like: "Who's does this guy's voice?" *looks at staff credits* "Gilbert Gottfried!? How did he do that voice!?" And if that happened, then it turns out that it was his natural voice and not a voice he came up with!
I remember years ago seeing Gilbert Gottfried in an episode of the Nickelodeon show "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" He played someone working at an afterlife radio station. This kid who was played by Ryan Gosling kept hearing a strange voice coming from the radio of a car and traced it to Gilbert at this creepy radio station. What made the whole thing so great was that the voice Gilbert was doing was that of the actor James Mason. I mean it was an incredible impression of Mason; Gilbert nailed it. Of course 99.999% of the kids watching that show didn't have a clue who James Mason was or that Gilbert was doing an impression of him. I don't think Gilbert cared though. He just did James Mason's voice because it amused him. That's what makes him so great.
I remember that episode. No idea who Mason is/was but gilbert is unmistakable and i was shook to see him in the show. I couldn’t believe it. Also that one episode that had the girl from clarissa explains it all.
@@Larsgman James Mason was a fine old actor in lots of films but one of the roles that I remember him most vividly for was that of Straker in Salem’s Lot (1979). Look for a clip here on RU-vid called “Face The Master-Salem’s Lot”. Mason is the one in the clip that says “Face the master”. Listen to his voice and then compare it to Gilbert’s impression in that episode of AYAOTD. It’s uncanny 😄
R.I.P. Gilbert Gottfried 💐 “Do Not Knock On The Window”. I worked at a restaurant as a waitress, many years ago, and I actually saw him there. I heard him talking and that is definitely his real voice. He wasn’t in my section, and I couldn’t/wouldn’t go up to bug him. My coworker who did serve him said he’s a sweet guy.
I remember him being on an episode of Are You Afraid Of The Dark as a radio host. He improvised a totally different voice with that particular character, so I knew his Problem Child 2's principal and Aladdin's Iago voice was just a another act he was doing. It was good to hear from him again in Seth McFarlane's Cavalcade compilation.
I filled in to produce a radio talk show in Atlantic City on New Year's Eve, years ago. The guest was Gilbert, and his on air/off air voice difference is INCREDIBLE. He was also extremely kind and gracious. Definitely one of the nicer, more down to Earth celebs I've met.
