Have you watched it yet? If not, then you've got only yourself to blame after reading beyond this point. So, we see in the beginning that GildedGuy is a young man, perhaps about to begin entering into the job force, or maybe even beginning his apprenticeship in a craft. He's obviously wanting something else, and we can see this when we look at him from the front with the imagery of the dismantled weapons on the carpet. GildedGuy was born and raised in a safe place, where people are given a role, and they fit it. We can see that some of the largest ones are the more needed. Then we see the carpet. The weapons are not whole, seemingly taken apart. This is because it's a peaceful society where they are all sheltered from the world outside by living in giant warehouses. We even see several others like it when GildedGuy begins his journey later on near the end. We discover that his father is obviously a very important role, likely that of the "Boss" role, who's job it is to pay everyone for their work. It's expected that GildedGuy would choose to follow in his father's footsteps, but GildedGuy dreams of being a hero. Unfortunately, there is no role for that, so he instead chooses to become a painter, and even if his father is shocked at first, he's accepting of it. We see that he has friends who also became painters, so it explains why his father isn't as surprised or disappointed. After all, his son will be happy, right? Then we skip to THREE YEARS LATER. Because of the colors that surround everything, and the designs, I watched the animation three times before realizing that there was a time skip as I was beginning to analyze everything. In those three years, GildedGuy has been working to the point where he's likely gotten more than one promotion, as we see that he has not one, but three different awards upon his workstation, as well as a different face shield compared to his co-workers. With this said, most of what we see that he works on appears to be signs. The first resembles a "Do Not Enter" Sign, but it's blue, which is the opposite color of what one would likely expect for such a sign. (Unless of course "Do Not Enter" signs are color coded differently in different regions, so feel free to correct me on that if you'd like. I'm fine with being wrong.) He's likely the most well paid of all of his friends, and we can see that he easily goes through his entire weekend simply enjoying his life with them, but when everyone is about to head to bed, we see something different. GildedGuy appears drained, perhaps even empty and lonely as he goes the other way of his fellow workers, and we see a black blotch grow around him. Depression likely, as we see him returning to his workstation to paint pictures of his old dreams that he has yet to get over, as well as a likely obvious crush upon Abigail. As he cleans up to hide his work, something different happens, though it's implied that his disregard for actually cleaning the painting properly may have caused something else to happen. I do not know what he used, but it was likely paint thinner of some sort, though we see several symbols throughout the next few scenes and are given hints on it's properties in these scenes. The first is that you're not suppose to mix it with another liquid or water due to it's largest symbol, but we also see a hazard symbol (Triangle with the ! in it), a symbol for Toxic, and Flammable; and lastly on the lid when he's asleep we see three more symbols, all of which appear to deal with ink or paint. I could be wrong again, but if anyone has a suggestion, please let me know. Anyways, the properties it has is that it is able to become extremely viscous and solid within seconds, can glow in the dark, and even seems to have corrosive properties, though that may also be a bit much, as it is "Magic Ink/Paint" after all. What we learn however, is that he can create unique paintings with them that seem to be "gilded" in some way. After refusing to join his friends later, his father discovers him and offers him a promotion, which GildedGuy turns down, and upon washing his next painting away we see something else. A star that was never there before, and is likely a hallucination, as we see the that the paint may have caused them as we see when he looks into the bucket. This makes him realize that there may be a way for his dream to become a reality, though when he attempts to make his dash, we see that his father is adamant about preventing his son from following foolish dreams, and attempts to stop him with promises that if he gets rich, he can marry Abigail, live in a big house, be admired by everyone.... but then we see what comes after all that. After GildedGuy's father dies, as we see the only way out blocked, and even his hobby of painting and drawing holds no joy left. We see what will happen if he does not follow his dreams.... though at the same time he is about to be overpowered by the wave of gold, something else happens. The "Magic Paint/Ink" gets into his eyes, as we can see for just a fraction of a second. We then see that each of his father's coins have a depiction of a scene that likely is his father's fondest memory of his son, and we see that GildedGuy is also sad that his father cannot accept that he has a different dream now. As we watch, GildedGuy continue to fight, he eventually almost reaches the balcony, only to barely come short, though his father does help by catching hold of his son's line, before lifting him up. We then look back to see the world that he lives in. A world where the signs he was painting for three years, were used for everything. From telling where the train would go, to even things as redundant as simply a cloud on a sign. His job wasn't worthless, nor was it unappreciated. We see GildedGuy's Paintings, EVERYWHERE. But.... GildedGuy can't seem to see it for it's worth... because it isn't his dream. The saddest thing, that caught my attention in this entire story was what happened to make GildedGuy who he was. Likely.... he's sick. The paint has now stained his eyes, and he obsesses over his dream to the point where he sees a star calling out to him. Whether this is an illness due to the paint's toxicity, or simply an obsession born from his desire to fulfill his childhood dreams. We cannot say, though his father understands that his son will likely never be the same again, and so he does the only thing he can do, and lets him go. And while we do see that GildedGuy leave, he is thankful for his parents at the end. The rest, is history for the most part. He finds his sword from a dead traveler's grave, adorned with flowers, and we learn that his Magic Pencil is just the remains of his paint that solidified. We learn what he can actually do with his paint, and how he can even weld gold into his armor to gild it. As much as I love the story of GildedGuy from Chef to Oxob, there was never any backstory aside that he was chasing a star that seemed to be guiding him somewhere unknown. This suddenly explains so much. His green eyes are not from the spirit of the cowboy, or even his greed that he began to feel as he was low on funds. We learned that GildedGuy may be cursed, ill, or something that is wrong with him... but perhaps it's better that we don't know the entire details or if this is even true. What we do know though, is that GildedGuy's next fight.... will likely be the greatest of them all.

@@TheTimeWornSoul mostly correct but gilded guy could see the star before the paint and the same star imagery is sprinkled all throughout the ancestral imagery found in the office. it’s pretty heavily implied that before the barn, GildedGuy comes from a long line of great warriors that followed that same star before they put down their tools of war and put down the roots that became the barn. So it’s less his father thinking that his son is sick. And more him accepting that his son was just never meant to stay. He’s got a star and a dream that he has to follow, and while he can’t see it himself his song does and it’d eat him alive not to follow it.
